CPA – town missing out

The letter below that I received this week from the Norfolk Register of Deeds highlights for Medfield how, as a town, we all pay in to the Massachusetts Community Preservation Act (CPA) fund ($44,250 last year), but we get none of the monies or benefits back because we have not adopted the CPA.

The CPA is a self-imposed additional tax of from 1-3%, in exchange for which the town get state matching monies.   CPA monies have to be spent on one of three areas:

  • historic preservation
  • affordable housing
  • open space and recreation

My analysis has always been that where we already spend on those three things anyway, that by not adopting the CPA that we are merely forgoing the state matching monies.

The one time the CPA went to the annual town meeting (ATM), about ten years ago, it was defeated.

WILLIAM P. ODONNELL REGISTER OF DEEDS ASSISTANT RECORDER OF THE LAND COURT Selectman Osler L. Peterson Medfield Board of Selectmen 0 Copperwood Road Medfield, MA 02052 Dear Selectman Peterson, COUNTY OF NORFOLK COUNTY OF PRESIDENTS REGISTRY OF DEEDS NORFOLK REGISTRY DISTRICT OF THE L AND C O URT January 18, 2019 The fees for the Community Preservation Act are set by the State Legislature on land documents recorded here at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds. l thought the chart on the reverse side would be of interest to you. It provides an illustration of the funds generated by the Community Preservation Act (CPA) in your community based on recorded real estate filings during the 2018 calendar year. The Community Preservation Act was signed into law on September 14, 2000. Today there are 175 Massachusetts communities that have adopted the Community Preservation Act, including this year the town of Plainville in Norfolk County. Just over 2.1 billion dollars has been raised to date statewide. The Registry of Deeds, at no additional cost to the Commonwealth or local communities, collects these revenues for the state once a document is recorded. The monies are then forwarded to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue on a monthly basi s. The funds collected by the Commonwealth are then redistributed back to the communities that have adopted the CPA through a variety of formulas. The Norfolk County Registry of Deeds which is located at 649 High Street, Dedham, is the principal office for real property in Norfolk County. The Registry is a resource for homeowners, title examiners, mortgage lenders, genealogists, municipalities and others with a need for secure, accurate, accessible land record information. Home_Page_Angel_Run_800x600-500x300

Rose Colleran and Susan Weisenfeld (above) have co-chaired the Medfield Foundation Angel Run for many years, and today announced that they will do so for two more spectacular, family fun filled Angel Runs, this December 2 and in 2019.

Therefore, the Medfield Foundation is looking for someone interested in learning how to operate the Angel Run over the next fifteen months by apprenticing to these two pros, to learn the ropes, and to then take over running the Angel run to be held in early December 2020.  The Angel Run is Medfield premier family fun event, and raises monies for Medfield families in need.

Angel Run 2018 – Register Now

angel-run-2016

Greetings Angel Run Friends,

Join us for the 13th running (or walking) of the Angel Run on Sunday, December 2 at 12:30pm!

Registration for the MFi Angel Run is officially open. Registration is available online for $25.00 per person at MedfieldFoundation.org/angel-run and runs through October 28. Register by this date to receive the always popular commemorative Angel Run shirt. After October 28 you can still register online, however the price goes up to $30.00 per person and you will not receive a shirt.

Once again this year we will be offering bib tag timing to provide you the most accurate time possible and a special separate starting corral for competitive runners. You decide if you should belong to that group. Be sure to note this on your registration.

We’ve also got great news to share as well. With the completion of the Philips Street bridge, the Angel Run will be returning to our official 5K route. A map of the route is available when you register or on our website.

New this year – The Sleigh Division!

This year runners pushing strollers can register for the Sleigh Division. Just like Santa speeds through the night with his sleigh, we know that some of our runners speed through the streets of Medfield with their Sleighs (strollers)! Awards will be given for the top male and female runners pushing a sleigh and also for the best decorated sleigh.

Register Now!

We hope to see you there (with bells on!)

Cheers,

The MFi Angel Run Team

MFi 2018 Summer Camp Fund Appeal

camp fund kids

Medfield Foundation 2018 Summer Camp Fund Appeal

Adults and children throughout Medfield have happy memories of summer camp. From a traditional experience in the woods to skill building or specialized camps, many Medfielders cherish these summer camp experiences and the friends they made there…How would you feel if you were left out of this experience?

Before the summer camp season begins, the Medfield Foundation (MFi) board wants the town to know that there is a highly significant need for assistance by families whose children yearn to attend camp,  but because of difficult financial situations at home they would be unable to attend. It can be challenging to grow up in an affluent community but not have the resources of friends’ families.

The Medfield Foundation encourages you to make a tax deductible donation to help Medfield children attend summer camp! There are easy ways to make your donation or to find out more:

  1. Send your check to the Medfield Foundation, ℅ Medfield Town House, 459 Main Street, Medfield MA 02052. Please make your check out to Medfield Foundation, Inc and then write “CAMP” in the memo line!
  2. Use this link to donate:  http://medfieldfoundation.org/donate/

Want more information before donating? Contact

MFi Treasurer, Abby Marble call: 508-361-9825  email: treasurer@medfieldfoundation.org

or Executive Board Member John Byrne call: 860-748-1447  byrne.johnb@gmail.com.

Last year, due to the severity of the need and number of children affected, the Medfield Foundation Board responded by creating the Children’s Camp Fund. Together with the generosity of our Medfield donors, $4,700 was raised which ensured 14 weeks of Medfield’s Parks and Recreation Summer Adventure Camp were enjoyed by a number of children, while others were provided summer swim lessons along with family memberships at Hinkley Pond. As a result of that success the Medfield Foundation Board unanimously voted to make the Children’s Camp Fund an ongoing fund, and this year hope to raise $5,000 so that this summer even more children who would otherwise be unable to go to camp can experience that rite of childhood summers!

Did you know…

The Medfield Foundation (MFi) is a 100% volunteer run 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable corporation whose mission is to enrich the lives of Medfield residents, build a stronger community, and facilitate the raising and allocation of private funds for public needs in the town of Medfield. Since its inception in 2001, the Medfield Foundation has raised over $2 million to support community-wide initiatives in Medfield.

MFi was founded based on the realization that some residents were interested in contributing more than town taxes to support projects and services that would enrich life in Medfield. Annual fundraising revenue varies each year as the initiatives and needs in the town change. You are urged to go to http://medfieldfoundation.org/.

Angel Run Sunday at 2PM – run or help!

Angel Run chairs

We are in the home stretch in preparing for the MFi Angel Run. With over 1,000 preregistered runners and a sunny day in the forecast we expect a great crowd.

We still need lots of goodies for the post race party. Many can be bought: water, hot cocoa mix, snack bags or home baked. This is Medfield’s finest weekend starting with the Christmas tree lighting, Saturday’s parade and ending with the Angel Run on Sunday. Be an angel and sign up for a small volunteer job!

Many thanks from the Medfield Foundation.
