Energy savings per Medfield Energy Committee at its 9/17/09 meeting

Town Buildings Energy Efficiency Initiatives: Mike Sullivan reviewed results for 2009 (fiscal year ending July 1, 2009) showing that schools have reduced energy use on electricity and gas both by 14%. The High School cut gas use by 27% and electricity by 20%. A report from the Water Dept. indicates a reduction of 24% with switching to variable speed pumps. The conversion to all LED traffic signals is complete. Town Hall energy use us up 6%. Library lighting recommendations will be planned. Mike will get reports from the other Town Departments and a summary chart will be prepared.

Bay Colony Rail Trail update on Newton Needham connection

The following is Tom Connors email update on the meeting last night about the Newton Needham connection.  Green line expansion is apparently at least many years away.

Newton Needham Green Line Extension meeting tonight
Tom Connors

This was a very good meeting tonight:
http://www.baycolonyrailtrail.org/GreenLineExtension

Srdj gave a great presentation about the potential Green Line extension, he really knows a lot about transportation and planning.
Meanwhile, it looks like the Green Line extension, because it is not in the MPO’s plan for the next 20 years, will not be happening anytime soon.

George Kirby from the Newton Bike/Ped Advisory committee has made important strides building consensus in Newton that the rail trail between Needham and Newton should move forward, while the Green Line remains a more theoretical concept.   Needham Selectman Moe Handel was favorable to this section of the rail line be included in the feasibility study that Cathy Buckley of the CTPS will be conducting, once she gets requests from selectmen/mayor of Needham / Dover / Medfield / Newton.  Medfield has done so already. DCR has indicated they are interested in being  leaseholders of the right of way.
Note that we have had positive official reactions from Needham, Dover, Medfield and Newton — 12 miles

We have also had positive unofficial reactions from Millis, Medway and Holliston — another 12 miles.  Bringing all those towns together could mean the entire Bay Colony Rail Trail would be about 24 miles.
We should continue with requests for feasibility study from the original towns (Newton to Medfield) but lets also get the other towns integrated with the project so we have a long term vision of where the eventual rail trail will be.
Thanks Tad for bringing everyone together tonight — a very successful evening.
