MFi Youth Volunteer of the Year

Lily Doctoroff

2017 Medfield Foundation Youth Volunteer of the Year

Lily was nominated by Beth Sancher, her Mentor/Adviser at Medfield High School, who submitted the following nomination:

Lily Doctoroff will change the world without any pomp or circumstance.

I first met Lily when she was in 3rd grade. And from that moment I knew she was a force to be reckoned with. Lily, at a young age, possessed a quiet confidence rarely found in adults, let alone in a child and to this day carries herself in such a manner.

Lily has performed more service for others than most adults I know. While many volunteer in a desultory fashion  in order to “pad up” a resume, Lily does not.  She’d actually  be repulsed by the idea.

Let me tell you why Lily Doctoroff is the ideal candidate for Medfield Youth Volunteer of the Year.

Since 5th grade Lily has given back to her community through her volunteer efforts with the Vine Lake Cemetery Restoration Committee. As part of her service she has cleaned gravestones, helped maintain the grounds, and participated in large-scale clean-up events.

At the age of fourteen, Lily organized the “Bigger than Bullying” initiative created to combat bullying and its impact on the community, and to raise money for several anti-bullying organizations. She designed this program to increase awareness and empower middle school students to fight back against bullying. The program was so successful that it was incorporated by the Ben Speaks Foundation, a prominent local anti-suicide and bullying organization.

For the past two years Lily has been an intern and a member of the Medfield State Hospital Planning Committee. In her volunteer role she is responsible for the meeting minutes, writing a weekly newsletter, and she also wrote articles for the town newspaper.  As a member of the Communications Sub-Committee, Lily has worked with town officials on the use of social and traditional media to maintain dialogue on the ongoing work of the committee between town and residents.

This past year, Lily has added one more act of service to her large repertoire and has volunteered at New Life Home Refurnishing. New Life Home is a local non-profit organization dedicated to collecting and refurbishing furniture to supply individuals and families in need with furniture when they find new homes after overcoming difficult situations. Lily has personally refurbished over 25 kitchen sets over the course of a three month period.

Lily’s volunteer efforts are also demonstrated in her school-life.

As a 9th grader, Lily decided that Medfield High School needed a Gender Equality Club and sought out an advisor and a space to hold the meetings. The club was founded with the intention of promoting awareness of gender and sexuality in society and provide a forum for political discussions within the school and larger community. As the president of the club, Lily partnered with the Medfield Gay Straight Alliance to fundraise for LGBT homeless youth.

Lily is also the president of the Medfield High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. In her role as President this year Lily has led multiple fundraisers such as selling candy bars in order to raise money for the senior scholarships. Not only is she president of the NHS, but Lily is an active member of the National Art Honor Society and the Chinese National Honor Society. As a member of the Chinese NHS, Lily has helped to host programs and events that promote Chinese culture nights for the public.

Moving beyond the Medfield domain, since 2010 Lily has visited the Medway House Family Shelter  to provide childcare and organize activities for children aged between 6 months and 13 years. Lily’s biggest contribution, however, was when she organized a fundraiser where she collected supplies for families during their transitions.

Lily’s volunteer efforts in the Medfield community not only directly affects the lives of  those she serves, but she is an inspiration to all.  As a mother of two young girls, I can only hope my daughters will give of themselves so diligently and selflessly.

MHS turf field in use tomorrow

Superintendent Jeff Marsden’s email this afternoon reported on the Medfield High School turf field status – namely, it opens for use tomorrow, closes 9/14 for up to 2 weeks to get finished, then opens for good, with ribbon cutting 10/7.

Turf Project Update

Hi All,

MHS field

I hope all is well.

I wanted to give you a quick update on the turf/track project. The turf portion of the project is nearly finished and our kids will begin using the field tomorrow, Tuesday August 30th. There is a few “punch list” items left to complete, but the field “passed” the necessary assessments for safe use. We will use the field for a couple of weeks and then it will be closed for 10-14 days on September 12th for the respraying of the track and “D” zones. In addition, the viewing area sill needs to be completed and the new scoreboard (donated by Needham Bank) will be installed at the end of September.

We have tentatively planned for a formal “ribbon cutting” ceremony on the evening of October 7th. We felt that it made sense to have the entire project finished before we have a ceremony.

Move info to follow.

I can make myself available to anyone that would like a tour of the field prior to the 7th. Just let me know.

Thanks again for your support of this exciting project.

Best,

Jeff

Bond sale for MHS field

Mike Sullivan today shared the information on the July 25 bond sale for the new MHS field –

The debt schedule for the high school field and track renovation is attached. Georgia will be at Tuesday’s Selectmen’s meeting with the votes you need to make and the documents you need to sign. Please note that the Treasurer elected to go with a 15 year bond, which will result in annual principal payments of $100,000/year. Also, the net interest cost is 1.63 %, while the annual coupon rates range from 2% to 4%. The reason for this is that the low bid included a $45,000 premium payment, which will reduce the net interest cost. The issue was sold on the 25th of July, rather than the 27th to try to lock in a lower rate in case the Federal Reserve Board announced it’s intention to raise interest rates this year. Mike S

MHS sigh

At the selectmen meeting last night Jeff Marsden, the School Superintendent, reported on the status of the turf field, amongst other things, and as an update today Jeff Marsden shared that the MHS webcam actually shows the work in progress.  Just scroll down the page to see the actual image of the field getting built.

I forgot to mention last night that the field project can be seen live on our website at  http://www.medfield.net/mhs.html

Thanks,

Jeff

Jazz Night tomorrow evening

From the Medfield Music Association –

MHS Jazz night 20160506

MHS Jazz Band takes home awards — in time for May 6 Jazz Night!

The Medfield High School Jazz Band, which is scheduled to perform at Jazz Night at 7 p.m., Friday, May 6, took home several awards at the Music Showcase Festival last week in Williamsburg, Virginia, including “Best Overall Jazz Band”, “Best Overall Rhythm Section” and “Best Overall Jazz Soloist” awarded to junior guitarist Dan Stromland.

Over the years, the Medfield Jazz Band has had a long track record of success under Music Director Doug Olsen, a professional jazz trumpeter. The band also earned an All-State Gold Award in March, and as part of that top rating, the ensemble was granted a performance slot at the Hatch Shell in Boston.

At Jazz Night, Olsen and the MHS Jazz Band will have the opportunity to perform with guest artist, Berklee College of Music professor and saxophonist Dino Govoni. Also performing with Govoni will be three other jazz ensembles – one from the high school and two from Blake Middle School; the Medfield HS Jazz Choir – which earned a “Superior” rating at the festival — will also perform.

Jazz Night begins at 7 p.m. in the Medfield HS Lowell Mason Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased Park Street Books and the Medfield branch of Needham Bank ($10 adults, $5 children/students). Tickets can also be purchased online at https://medfieldmusicassociation.givezooks.com/events/jazz-night-2016-with-dino-govoni, or at the door. Jazz Night proceeds support the entire Medfield Music Program across orchestra, choir and band, as well as general music education at the elementary level.

This is the fifth year Needham Bank has been the presenting sponsor of Jazz Night, and it is especially proud to support the concert in celebration of Medfield recently earning the “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation – one of just 476 school districts nationwide to receive the distinction.

ANGP

ANGP

Please consider supporting the CLASS of 2016 by making a donation to this year’s All Night Graduation Party (ANGP). Medfield’s ANGP is a time-honored tradition that has provided a safe and fun way for Seniors to celebrate on graduation night for the past 24 years. The party held at the Medfield High School could not take place with out the support of our community. Graduation Day is Sunday, June 12th, for 232 Medfield Seniors. Use the blue form in the ANGP flyer that was recently sent to all Medfield families or simply mail your contribution to MHS All Night Graduation Party, PO Box 38, Medfield, MA 02052. THANK YOU!

Field bids $1.6 – 1.8m.

MHS field

The ATM article 21 looked to appropriate $1.4m. to renovate the MHS turf field.  Per an email today from Mike Sullivan, the bids opened this morning came in higher.

The bids for the school field & track rebuild were opened at 10:00 a.m. this morning. There were five bids and they ranged, roughly, between $1.6 and $1.8 million. The School Dept. is working to see how the work can be reduced to bring it back to the $1.4 million that we have been using for Town Meeting. Jeff told me to stick with the $1.4 million figure and they would go with that amount on Monday. Mike S
