We posted a note on the website about the following upcoming street construction projects: https://www.town.medfield.net/587/7921/DPW-Projects 

  1. Evergreen / Longmeadow area: work is scheduled to begin on July 5 and July 6, streets included are: Evergreen Way, Kamark Drive, Longmeadow Road, Spring Valley Road, Stonybrook Road, Surrey Run and Woodfall Road.
  2. North Street from Janes Ave to Pine Street: work is scheduled to begin the week of July 11 and take approximately two weeks, weather permitting. Traffic delays are anticipated and we encourage drivers to seek alternate routes.  
  3. West Street from North Meadows Road to the Millis Town Line: work is scheduled to begin the week of July 11. Traffic delays are anticipated and we encourage drivers to seek alternate routes.

Water Conservation Restrictions

Current Water Conservation Status: Tier 4 – All nonessential outdoor water use is prohibited, effective May 5, 2022

Due to an emergency equipment repair at Well #6, we have had to take the well offline. As a result, the Department of Public Works has declared an immediate Tier 4 water restriction: nonessential outdoor water use, except by handheld hose, is prohibited. 

We anticipate completing the repairs within 2 to 4 weeks and will continue to provide updates.

The Town has five active water wells: 
Wells 1 and 2, located along the Charles River off Route 109
Wells 3 and 4, located off Elm Street, behind the Wheelock School. The Town is currently building a new water treatment plant to treat manganese at Wells 3 and 4. The project also includes establishing a new Well 3A to replace the existing Well 3 which is failing. 
Well 6, located off Route 27 near the Sherborn Town Line. Well 6 is the Town’s highest producing well

In 2021, Well 6 pumped approximately 53% of the Town’s total water supply. In 2020, it pumped approximately 55% of the total. 

Information about Water Restrictions:
When elevated restrictions are in place, nonessential outdoor water uses that are subject to mandatory restrictions include: 
Irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems; 
Washing of vehicles, except in a commercial car wash or as necessary for operator safety; 
Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks, except as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement. 
The following uses may be allowed when mandatory restrictions are in place: 
Irrigation to establish a new lawn and new plantings during the months of May and September;
Irrigation of public parks and recreational fields by means of automatic sprinklers outside the hours of 9am to 5pm; 
Irrigation of lawns, gardens, flowers and ornamental plants by means of a hand-held hose. 

Water uses not subject to mandatory restrictions are those required: 
For health or safety reasons; 
By regulation; 
For the production of food and fiber; 
For the maintenance of livestock; 
To meet the core functions of a business (for example, irrigation by plant nurseries as necessary to maintain stock).

Chief Carrico is closely monitoring the storm as Emergency Management Director. We have staffed additional public safety personnel including the DPW through Monday. 

8/22 8:30am Eversource Hurricane Henri Update

Good morning,

As of 8:30 a.m., the company does not have storm-related outages on its Massachusetts system. Eversource has crews staged throughout its service area Sunday morning in preparation for any damage caused by the high winds and heavy rain of Hurricane Henri.

The storm has changed track several times in its approach to New England and is now tracking further to the east, which could increase wind impacts in Eastern Massachusetts. Eversource is prepared to shift resources as necessary to respond to hardest-hit areas. Rainfall of 2 to 5 inches is predicted for Western Massachusetts, with up to 1½ inches forecasted for eastern areas. Peak wind gusts could reach 70 mph on the South Shore, Cape Cod and Islands; 55 mph in Boston and other areas of Eastern Massachusetts; and 45 mph in Western Massachusetts. Winds are expected to peak Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in eastern areas, and between 3 p.m. and midnight in western areas.

Arbor Day celebration yesterday

Select Board Chair Michael Marcucci reads the Arbor Day proclamation yesterday afternoon, while the Brownie Troop that arranged for the two cherry trees to be planted in front of the post office look on and then mulched the trees. The DPW’s Robert Kennedy, Jr. assisted the Brownies with the mulch.

Pam McCarthy and Kate Holmes, the Leaders of Brownie Troop 82076 stated:

“The girls felt special, and so happy to get together (in person, hooray!) as a group to do something meaningful for the town. Those beautiful cherry trees will be there for years to come, and I’m sure each time they drive by, they will fondly remember that those are ‘their trees.’  And we, as their parents, will take pride in thinking the same! What a wonderful way to wrap up the school year for them!”

DPW plants trees at Post Office

Today the DPW’s Drew Dauphinee and Joe Gorman are planting two good sized cherry trees on the berm in front of the post office. The Town of Medfield owns that site and leases it for the post office to use. North Street is starting to achieve a critical mass of cherry trees for the town to build on, starting with the large one at the Bank of America up through the cluster Bob Borrelli installed in front of his two buildings across from Deb’s and my office.

Jean Mineo was heard to think that once there are six more cherry trees along North Street that she will organize an annual Medfield cherry blossom festival.
