Smoke Testing Notification 1 of 1 November 2020
SEWER SYSTEM EVALUATIONS IN YOUR AREA
SMOKE TESTING – NOVEMBER 2020
WHAT: Non-toxic and non-staining smoke will be introduced into the sanitary
sewer system to detect connections to the storm water drainage system. Work will
follow the State and Local COVID-19 Guidelines.
WHERE: Smoke testing will be conducted on your street and surrounding area.
No entry into your residence will be required.
WHEN: Field crews will be on your street within the next week to perform this
test. The hours for testing are between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, beginning Tuesday,
November 10 through Friday, November 20. Note: Tests will only occur in dry
weather and could be delayed for 24 to 72 hours due to rain.
WHY: This project is part of the Town’s long-term efforts to identify connections
between the sanitary sewer system and storm water drainage. These connections
can add unnecessary flow to the sanitary sewer system resulting in additional
treatment costs and water pollution.
WHO: EST Associates, Inc. (Contractor) and Woodard & Curran (W&C)
(Engineer) will be walking around your area with company vehicles and yellow
safety vests. A Medfield Police detail will be on site as well.
Impact on Area: There is no anticipation of disruption to your sewer service
during these tests. Smoke may billow out of area drains, catch basins, roof leaders,
and house plumbing stacks. Residents are encouraged to fill any unused plumbing
traps (for example, a basement toilet/sink not used frequently) with water.
In case of emergency or an actual fire, please contact 911.
Contacts: If you have any special needs, deliveries, concerns, or questions, contact:

NEW LIFE TURNS HARDSHIP INTO HOPE

From Susan Maritan –

TURN HARDSHIP INTO HOPE

A story of woe might be what you expect when you speak with Rich Purnell, Executive Director at New Life Furniture Bank of MA, when you ask him to recap this year at the non-profit. How could he and a group of volunteers successfully continue to serve clients coming out of homelessness in the midst of a pandemic?

“We had big plans for 2020,” said Purnell. “We were prepared to collect more home furnishings and reach more clients than ever before. Then COVID-19 hit Massachusetts, and New Life’s operations halted… but not for long. “We shut down for a week, revamped our operations, and reopened, thanks to a massive volunteer effort. I’m proud to say we were the first furniture bank in Massachusetts to maintain our mission with a new model and safety precautions.”

Purnell and his team adjusted their approach by switching from clients visiting in-person, to “shopping” at an online “store”. Purnell identified software that would work for the furniture bank. Volunteers upload photos of household goods so clients can make their choices virtually. After they “shop” on-line, other volunteers bundle and prepare the clients’ selections for pick-up, and the next day moving trucks pick up and deliver the goods to the clients’ apartments.

Many of New Life’s clients spent months or even years in homeless shelters before obtaining housing assistance. Most do not have the resources to obtain household furnishings and avoid debt without the help of a furniture bank.

Thursday, October 29th is the launch of the “Changing World. Changing Needs. Changing Lives.” campaign. These funds raised will enable New Life’s to serve more households.

“Although we don’t know what is coming in the days, weeks, and months ahead, it is our supporters that keep New Life innovating to meet the rising challenge,” said Purnell. “A gift of any amount will ensure that individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness have the necessary furniture and household items they need to live in security, comfort, and hope.”

Gifts may be made at newlifefb.org or by check payable to New Life Furniture Bank of MA, sent to P.O. Box 573, Medfield, MA 02052.

Thank you for your support.

Email below, from Bill Harvey, Chair of the Water & Sewer Commission, today indicates that the poop plots from the MWRA Deer Island plant indicate we are are facing as much COVID-19 now as we did in the spring –

Subject: Plot of COVID in Deer Island MWRA Wastewater Plant –

Interesting plot… Current data is close to the highs in the Spring.  The solid lines are 7 sample moving averages that are slower to react to individual points shown.

Halloween

The Board of Health is asking that residents follow the CDC and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidance in order to most safely celebrate Halloween amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With these guidelines in mind, the Board of Health recommends you keep Halloween activities outside, maintain social distancing, wear a protective face mask (instead of, or in addition to, a costume mask), and maintain good hand washing. As a reminder, any Halloween activities are subject to Governor Baker’s order on gathering size limits
