Re-enactment yesterday of the town selectmen accepting the key to the Medfield Memorial Library in 1917 from Granville Dailey and his oldest daughter, Maebelle.

I learned from Richard DeSorgher’s remarks that (1) Mr. Dailey gave $74,000 to the town for the library, which must have been a huge sum at that time, and (2) that the Medfield Memorial Library was built only 24 years after the Boston Public Library.  Impressive facts for what was then a town with 1,700 residents (and 1,900 patients at the Medfield State Hospital).

The Medfield Park & Recreation Commission has obtained and is presenting to the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday evening a feasibility study that MPRC commissioned about a potential new community recreation center facility.  That study can be accessed here.

The floor plan above is of the basic building, but there is also an option with an attached indoor soccer field, as shown below.

To recreate the time 100 years ago when the Medfield Memorial Library was dedicated, the town will reenact that event on Sunday at 2PM on the original building’s steps facing Rte. 109, and to make it more realistic, cars will be banned from in front of the library.  This from Colleen Sullivan of the library committee orchestrating the event –

This Sunday, Oct 1st from 2pm – 5pm, the Medfield Memorial Public Library is having a BIG Celebration!  The Library is 100 years old and we will be holding a reenactment of the 1917 Dedication of the Library on the front steps (facing Main St) at 2pm!

Granville Dailey, the NYC investor, and part owner of the Straw Hat Factory was the man who hired famed architect Wm G. Perry to design the Library and Dailey dedicated the building to his deceased wife and daughter (hence the words “Memorial Public Library” on the top of the portico) in 1917 on the same front steps that we see today.

“Granville” will be joining us to hand the “key” to the Library to our Selectmen, and a ribbon cutting.  Because there is very little space on the sidewalk, Medfield Police Chief, Bob Meaney, directed by our Selectmen, have agreed to re-route/detour traffic on Rt 109 for a short period of time, beginning at 1:30pm – approximately 2:15 or 2:30pm.  Traffic on North St will not be impacted, and traffic on 109 will be directed around this small area in front of the Library for that 45min – 1hr time frame only.

We appreciate your cooperation during this very special event celebrating 100 years of our Public Library and “Granville”, the man who made it all happen.

The Moderator has appointed Thomas F. Mulvoy, Jr. to the vacant slot on the Warrant Committee created by the resignation of Tim Nugent.  I recently heard Tom described on the radio (either WGBH or WBUR) as the “unofficial historian” of the Boston Globe.  This email this afternoon from the moderator:

Tom Mulvoy, who lives on Donnelly Drive, is a 17-year resident of Medfield. A widower (his wife died in 2006), he is the father of four boys aged 30 to 18 – Stephen, Michael, Nicholas, and Benjamin. Tom was born in Dorchester and was educated in his parish school (St. Mark’s), at Boston College High School, and at Boston College. He also spent a year as a professional journalism fellow at Stanford University in California.

Tom has been a newspaper professional his entire adult life, beginning with a two-year stint as a general assignment reporter at radio station WPLM in Plymouth, Mass., from which position he joined the staff of The Boston Globe in late 1966. He retired from the paper as its managing editor for news operations in December 2000. He then taught for six years at Boston College as an adjunct professor in the Communication Department. While working at BC, he signed on as a part-time editor at the Dorchester Reporter, a weekly, and he still puts in three-four days a week there as an associate editor. He is the managing editor of the Boston Irish Reporter, a monthly sister paper to the weekly edition.

Starting November 1 residents will be able to use a mental health referral service called Interface operated out of William James College, thanks to a contract initiated by the schools.  Interface maintains an up-to-date catalogue of  providers, insurance requirements, and patient openings.  At the presentation on Tuesday, the Interface founder stated that 98% of callers to Interface are connected to a provider within four days.  I believe the yearly contract was only $10,500.  Dr. David Worthsley stated that the service would save him huge amounts of time, as he currently maintains and updates similar records.  Interface is about ten years old and currently services fifty-five municipalities in Massachusetts.
