Fun ad

This is an ad for a movie, but it is really a fun one that made me chuckle.

Thanksgiving morning hunt

One of the fun Thanksgiving Day morning events in town is the Norfolk Hunt Club’s drag hunt.  This is one of the Norfolk Hunt Club’s major events of the year with as many as 75 – 100 horses and riders, and a great time to witness the hunt in full gala and pageantry.

The “hunt” will begin at the Steeplechase Field in Medfield (240 North Street) at 9:00 AM.   Several hundred people watch and celebrate the start of this hunt there.   Many people then drive over to the large field atop the sledding hill and across from the Medfield State Hospital where the riders and hounds take a break.

From there the hunt usually rides out through the fields behind the Medfield State Hospital into Dover, eventually circling back on trails through the woods to the North Street starting point.

November 10 Walking Tour

And Save the Date for a January 11, 2014 Public Forum

The State Hospital Advisory Committee (SHAC) invites you to a free tour of the buildings and campus of the former Medfield State Hospital on Sunday, November 10, 2013, starting at 2:00 PM.  The focus for this tour will be a little different than the one held on October 8, 2013 — in addition to discussion of reuse of this beautiful property, the tour will include an explanation of the extensive remediation work that is planned near the Charles River.

We will walk around the campus, visit the remediation area around the old power plant, and walk past the water tower that may soon be transferred to Medfield. This will be led by Michael Taylor, Chair of the Medfield Historic District Commission, Richard DeSorgher, Town Historian, and John Thompson, Chairman of the Remediation Team for Medfield. Mike will talk about the buildings and the efforts to preserve them, Richard will discuss the history of the hospital, and John will give an update on the clean-up and restoration program.

Plan to meet near the hospital’s security guard entrance on Hospital Road for an interesting and important tour, discussion, and Q&A session.

Pocket park installation

Interesting installation of photos glued onto the sidewalk in the pocket park between Zebra’s and Starbucks, meant to focus attention on the discussion of what the town should do with this small parcel, that has long been the "pocket park."

Sign on Main Street for Park Street businesses

Tracy Buckley of Medfield Yoga Studio at 28 Park Street raised with me this morning the need for a sign on Main Street that tells the Rte 109 traffic that there is a business district down Park Street.

She was preaching to the choir, as I have been saying for several years that we need to do something of that sort to promote the businesses on Park Street.  In the past the idea got waylaid and stalled because there is no town owned land on which to put the sign, and most recently the zoning issue with respect to off premises signs was raised.

Today I suggest that the town has the right to erect a directional sign, akin to a street sign, and that we should proceed to do so to give those Park Street businesses both greater visibility and viability.

We already have similar signs along Main Street for the Episcopal Church and the Roberts Mitchell Funeral Home.

Town reports back to 1857 on-line

This email from David Temple –
As a result of having these annual town reports scanned and readable on line, the information is much more accessible to researchers – and the society can recycle several cartons of duplicate old reports, freeing up some much needed space in our basement.

Shawn Dooley running for rep

Yesterday afternoon I met at the new Dunkin’ Donuts with Shawn Dooley, a Norfolk resident who is running as a Republican for Dan Winslow’s former seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.  After telling Shawn about the Medfield State Hospital site’s future being the biggest issue currently pending in town, I then took him to the meeting of the State Hospital Advisory Committee yesterday evening.  SHAC was interviewing the consultant they have hired to run a visioning session for town residents to address the future of the MSH site.

Shawn is a former builder and current town clerk and school Committee member in Norfolk.  He was also  Dan Winslow’s campaign manager.  Shawn said he does have two opponents, one from Norfolk and one from Walpole.  His website is www.Dooley4Rep.com.

BTW, from my now one visit each to Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, I give the latter a slight edge on décor, although the small table and chairs right inside the Dunkin’ Donuts door were quite comfortable.  I was also pleased not to have trouble exiting the Dunkin’ Donuts onto Rte 27, but it was after 7 PM.  We were leaving to go to the Town House, and even at that hour I saw no way to get out onto Rte 109 given the traffic backed up from the light.
