Re: Playdate Guidance for Medfield Families

The Medfield Board of Health today issued tangible recommendations to help Medfield families better navigate the social distancing strategies advocated by Governor Charlie Baker, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

With schools and childcare services closed, many parents may be struggling to cope with children at home. Working from home with children present can be challenging, especially when they are younger.

It is important to remember that playdates put people in your family and community at greater risk of getting COVID-19. The best way to protect vulnerable members of your family and your community is to not have playdates; however, for some families, it may not be feasible to completely eliminate them.

If you must have playdates, there are strategies you can use to greatly reduce transmission risk:

  • Have fewer playdates
  • Locate playdates outside and minimize shared equipment
    • Good options: going for hikes, riding bicycles or scooters
    • Activities to avoid: playing on communal play structures or sandboxes.
  • Include as few participants as possible (see recommendation below regarding ‘monogamy’)
  • Encourage your children to play in a way that maintains social distance.
  • Have children wash hands for 20 seconds with soap and water after the playdate.

Consider Playdate Monogamy

Consider a “monogamous” playdate relationship. If, because of your work or family situation, you must have your children participate in some playdates, consider partnering exclusively with another family, and sticking with them throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. Pick a family that is in a similar situation and is also serious about social distancing. If the adults in both families are consistently practicing social distancing, and their children are only playing with children of one other family, that is much better for slowing down the spread of COVID-19 in our community than a situation where children are playing with children from different families each day.

Please see the enclosed Washington Post article
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2020/03/14/parenting-tips-coronavirus/) which contains very good recommendations. This article emphasizes the importance of establishing a routine with your children. It also provides several resource links for homeschool resources, working from home with kids, and screen time strategies.

What’s open in town – Medfield edition

town seal

Kristine Trierweiler had Sarah Raposa set up a Google Doc of what is open in Medfield, after seeing the Town of Amherst do it yesterday.
Per Sarah, as a google doc, it can be edited by others.
It’s posted on the economic development committee page and as a news alert:  https://www.town.medfield.net/361/Economic-Development-Committee

COVID-19 information from town

Kristine Trierweiler Town Administrator TOWN OF MEDFIELD Office of BOARD OF SELECTMEN TOWN HOUSE, 459 MAIN STREET MEDFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS 02052-0315 (508) 906-3011 (phone) (508) 359-6182 (fax) To: Town of Medfield Residents Medfield Boards and Committees From: Kristine Trierweiler, Town Administrator Medfield Board of Selectmen Date: March 12, 2020 Re: Town of Medfield’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) Measures The Town of Medfield has taken actions in recent weeks to prepare for the potential spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Last week, Town Administrator Kristine Trierweiler convened a team, comprised of the Town’s Board of Health, Fire Chief, Police Chief, Facilities Director, and the Superintendent of Schools to discuss the Town’s preparations. In addition, on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, the Board of Health met with the Town Administrator and Fire Chief to further discuss public health measures. On Wednesday, March 11, 2020 department heads met to discuss COVID-19 and how the Town will mitigate any impact to operations. At this time, no Medfield residents have tested positive for COVID-19. Town and school officials will continue to meet weekly and remain in close communication daily as the situation evolves. School and Town buildings are being cleaned with particular attention to touch points and high contact surfaces. Areas will continue to be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis. The Town is maintaining a webpage about COVID-19 on its Town website and will post additional information and announcements at this link: https://www.town.medfield.net/1860/Coronavirus-Info-COVID-19 The Medfield Board of Health remains the primary point of contact for any infectious disease outbreaks and will be assisted by Fire Chief Carrico in his role as the Town’s Emergency Management Director. We ask that all Medfield residents, board and committee members, and employees do their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (as well as other seasonal illnesses, including the flu and the common cold) by taking the following actions:  Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.  Clean things that are frequently touched (like doorknobs and countertops) with household cleaning spray or wipes.  Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or your inner elbow, not your hands.  Stay home if you are sick and avoid close contact with others. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has published additional recommendations, including actions that higher risk individuals, particularly the elderly, can take to reduce exposure.. More information can be found on the DPH website here: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/covid-19-prevention-and-treatment The Town of Medfield has begun following these recommendations and has temporarily closed the CENTER at Medfield. The Town will consider cancelling or postponing large gatherings in the coming days and weeks – announcements will be posted to the Town’s website and on social media. We ask that all boards and committees hold public meetings only if necessary. As a reminder, the Town has a remote participation policy that allows remote participation. Please note, open meeting laws currently require a quorum be physically present before other members can participate remotely. The policy can be found here: https://www.town.medfield.net/DocumentCenter/View/2053/Remote-Participation-Policy-2018. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide ongoing updates on the website and on social media.20200312-KT-Medfield COVID-19 Memo to Public_Page_2

Medfield Community Garden’s 2020 Registration Now Open

From Neal Sanders –

Medfield Community Garden’s 2020 Registration Now Open

Is growing fresh vegetables something you would like to do?  Have you tried to grow them in your back yard, but found you had too much shade?  Do you live in a condo or apartment that has no space for gardens?  If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, the town of Medfield has a possible solution for you: the Medfield Community Garden.

Registration for spaces at the garden located on Plain Street off Route 27 is now open for the 2020 season, and ends when the last space is filled.  Plots are available on a first-request basis and usually go quickly.  A 300-square-foot plot provides ample room for a variety of different vegetables for most families. Approximately 12 plots are available for this season.

Both novice or experienced gardeners will find the Community Garden offers a great opportunity to learn and grow.  The Garden is located on Conservation Commission land at the former Holmquist Farm on the south side of town.  The site provides all-day sun, a scarce commodity for many Medfield residents.

Never had a vegetable garden, or feel you’d like a refresher course, or more information on growing in this area?  Master Gardener and lecturer Betty Sanders will offer a freshly updated program on planning, planting and growing a garden in this area.  The presentation will be held on Saturday, March 14, at 10:30 a.m. in the Medfield Library.

Gardeners provide their own seeds or seedlings, agree to fence their plot, and keep it weed-free throughout the season.  The town provides a ready-to-plant site, wood chips for paths, and on-site-water.  Because the Community garden is on town-owned Conservation land, gardeners are not allowed to use any herbicides or inorganic insecticides.

The Community Garden has now been on Plain Street for more than fifteen years.  As a result of good gardening practices, the site is rich in organic nutrients, eliminating the need for almost all fertilizers and additives.

Residents can apply for a plot by contacting garden co-manager Neal Sanders at 508-359-9453 or n_h_sanders@yahoo.com.  Plots measuring 15 feet by 20 feet are $18, plus a one-time fee for joining the garden of $20.

From Mary McCarthy, Chair of the Conservation Commission –

town seal

This is for anyone who may have missed the other invites to complete the survey for whatever reason. Sorry if you have seen this already!

Friends and Neighbors,

If you attended the Town Wide Master Plan Public Participation Forum/Visioning on Sunday October 20, you know that the availability of Open Space is one of the most highly valued features of living in Medfield.

The Medfield Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP) Committee, in collaboration with the Medfield Conservation Commission and Parks and Recreation, is putting the finishing touches on its updated OSRP. (A state approved OSRP is necessary for the town to be eligible to receive certain state funding.) A final step in this process is completion of a survey by residents on use of Open Space in town.

Please take a few minutes to complete the brief survey located here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KTS5NYY

Thank you for your participation!

Best regards,

Mary
