New Life Virtual 5k

New Life Virtual 5k open to May 10

The New Life Virtual 5K is still open for runners, walkers and more through May 10. The event benefits New Life Furniture Bank of MA and its mission to provide essential home furnishings to those in need.

Runners and walkers register the same way they would for a conventional run, at www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k, where they can also create or join a team. Participants create their own 5k route, or use fitness apps. Teams or individuals may even choose to row 5k on erg machines, or to bike. Entrants complete their personal 5k anytime up to May 10, and runners and walkers log their times on Racewire. On May 11, results will be posted and awards will be given in traditional categories, as well as in new, creative categories like most creative course. Participants are encouraged to post photos with the hashtag #NewLifeStillRunning or send an email to trailrun@newlifefb.org. Over 250 people have already registered for the event, including runners from as far away as Melbourne, Australia.

The Virtual 5k offers an important opportunity for supporters who seek a way to do something positive and proactive while still being safe. “Folks joining the Virtual 5k not only support the New Life mission, they also are a welcome part of a community doing something that matters,” said Ron Yates, co-founder of New Life Furniture Bank. “That’s especially important right now. And, running in the virtual 5k is a healthy thing to do. Everyone wins.”

The Virtual 5k raises funds that are critical to New Life’s ability to serve its clients. “The economic impact of COVID-19 is hitting our clients hard,” said Rich Purnell, Executive Director of New Life. He added that, “in the coming months, we anticipate a surge in requests as many families will be displaced from their homes.”

New Life Furniture Bank of MA collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need. The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area. New Life provides a meaningful option for local residents who are downsizing, renovating or disposing of a loved one’s property.

To register, go to www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k. Those interested in being a sponsor or making a financial contribution are encouraged to visit www.newlifefb.org.

Medfield COVID-19 Relief Fund – successes & status

Medfield COVID-19 Relief Fund Seeing Initial Success

The COVID-19 crisis impacting the world around us is having its own effects right here in Medfield. As of April 23, 2020, Medfield has seen 23 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus with 14 recoveries. But beyond those catching this disease, many of your friends and neighbors have been impacted through job losses or other hardships.

As the Local Foundation serving our town, the Medfield Foundation, Inc. (MFi) launched the Medfield COVID-19 Relief Fund in March to assist with those individuals who find themselves experiencing significant financial challenges caused by the COVID-19 public health emergency.

To date, more than 140 individuals and organizations have contributed to the Medfield COVID-19 Relief Fund. We continue to receive requests from local residents experiencing financial hardships and anticipate this will continue into the coming months as this crisis stretches on. Through the generous donations received, we’ve been able to help. Here are some comments from just a few people who have received support from the fund.

“I’m so grateful to have received help with my rent. Being home all day is pretty tough on the psyche, where all one can think about is impending hardship. Knowing my rent is taken care of is a huge weight off my shoulders and I am so grateful for the help I’ve received. Thank you so much for everything.”

“When you are told that there are people that care about their community to donate something they have that others don’t, it means so much. It really took a lot of pressure off me so I thank you with all my heart…my guardian angel.”

“I would love to share that I am a single mom of four children… I’ve been out of work for three weeks, still waiting on my unemployment, and it is so nice to know that this program is there and helping so many. I can’t say enough good about this amazing program. God bless and thank you so very much.”

“I don’t know what to say. You saved 3 people.”

“Thanks for the good news and to all the donors who are supporting each and everyone in a time like this when most hope is gone.”

A special thank you to the following local organizations:

  • Medfield Lions Club
  • Medfield Home Committee
  • Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization, Inc. (M.E.M.O.)

In addition to these donations, a local business, Kate Image Photography Studio created the Front Steps Project Medfield with proceeds benefiting the Medfield Foundation Medfield COVID-19 Relief Fund. Katie Ntasios, owner of Kate Image, donates her time to take “socially distanced” family photos to document the experience. Families that participate are encouraged to make a donation to the Medfield COVID-19 Relief Fund. Thank you to the many families that have already participated and made donations. For more information or to schedule your photo please visit https://www.kateimage.com/.

In order to meet the immediate and future local need, it is our hope that additional generous donors will join us to support the good work being done during these challenging and uncertain times. Information on how to donate can be found online at https://www.medfieldfoundation.org/give. If you would like to send a check, please make it payable to Medfield Foundation and mail it to Medfield Foundation, PO Box 745, Medfield, MA 02052. All distributions from the fund are made after review by local social service professionals.

If you have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak and your family is in need of emergency assistance, we want to help. Please visit our website at https://www.medfieldfoundation.org/covid-19 to submit our online request form to receive support. Someone will follow up directly with you. About Medfield Foundation

Did you know…

The Medfield Foundation (MFi) is a 100% volunteer run 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable corporation whose mission is to enrich the lives of Medfield residents, build a stronger community, and facilitate raising and allocation of private funds for public needs in the town of Medfield. Since its inception in 2001, MFi has raised over $3 million to support community-wide initiatives in Medfield.

MFi was founded on the realization that some residents were interested in contributing more than town taxes to support projects and services that would enrich life in Medfield. Annual fundraising revenue varies each year as the initiatives and needs in the town change. For additional information please visit https://medfieldfoundation.org.

Medfield Helping Organizations

I was asked yesterday – “Could your blog offer names and contact information of organizations that help Medfield residents in time of need?”   I will list the ones of which I am aware, and invite others to add to my list.

The Home Committee

The oldest helping entity I am aware of is the Home Committee.  Kathy Thompson (kathompson@gmail.com) and Georgia Colivas of the Home Committee appeared at a recent Select Board meeting to explain the Home Committee.  At that time they announced that the Home Committee had made a substantial donation to the Medfield Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund.

The Town of Medfield’s human services are managed through the Medfield Youth Outreach, the Council on Aging, and Veterans Services.

Medfield Foundation

mfi logo

The Medfield Foundation was started in 2001 with a simple idea, that Medfield residents would be willing to make private donations for public purposes in their own hometown, and to date over $3 m. has been given.

As a result of the annual Angel Run each December being a Medfield Foundation initiative, MFi started fourteen years ago raising monies for its Public Needs Fund to assist Medfield families.  The MFi’s Public Needs Funds are disbursed to an Angel Fund administered jointly by the Medfield Youth Outreach office and Pastor Phil Bauman of the UCC, from where the monies are disbursed to Medfield families in need.

MFi responded four years ago to a perceived need to assist all Medfield children to be able to attend summer camp by the creation of its Camp Fund, currently administered by Rose Colleran.

Medfield Helping Hands, a Medfield Foundation initiative, is a volunteer network that supports Medfield families in temporary crisis with meals and rides. It is run by Laurie Nealon, Kathleen Cahill, and Katie Henebry.

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund is an endowment established for the long-term benefit of the Medfield community which engages in grant-making to support community-driven projects.  Its Community Board, run by Todd Trehubenko and Chris Cahill, is engaged in raising $1 m. to endow the Legacy Fund.

Most recently, MFi has created its COVID-19 Relief Fund, which was created to specifically assist residents in need due to issues arising due to the COVID-19 virus.  The COVID-19 Relief Fund is being headed by Evan Weisenfeld and Abby Marble

Any Medfield Foundation initiative mentioned can be reached through the website, or by an email to president@medfieldfoundation.org or  treasurer@medfieldfoundation.org.

Churches

I suspect that all the churches in town are engaged in helping residents as well, but I do not know those details.

New Life Still Running with a Virtual 5k

By Tod Dimmick

The pandemic has affected every community event this spring, including the annual New Life 5k Trail Run, an event that raises more than 20% of the New Life Furniture Bank’s budget. This Massachusetts charity serves nearly 700 hundred households every year, including individuals, families, single mothers, seniors and veterans, as they come out of homelessness. New Life collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need.

Faced with the challenge of having to cancel its annual 5k Trail Run, New Life sought creative and safe ways to hold their event, which raises funds that are critical to New Life’s ability to serve its clients. “The economic impact of COVID-19 is hitting our clients hard,” said Rich Purnell, Executive Director of New Life. He added that, “in the coming months, we anticipate a surge in requests as many families will be displaced from their homes.”

new life 2020

After careful thought, the trail run organizing committee announced a new “virtual 5k.”  Runners and walkers register the same way they would for a conventional run, at www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k, where they can also create or join a team. Participants create their own 5k route, or use fitness apps like MapMyRun and Strava. Teams or individuals may even choose to row 5k on erg machines, or to bike. Entrants complete their personal 5k anytime between April 13 and May 10, and runners and walkers log their times on Racewire. On May 11, results will be posted and awards will be given in traditional categories, as well as in new, creative categories like most creative course.

Ron Yates, co-founder of the New Life Furniture Bank, said “we recognize that this is a totally new way to do something like this, and that is part of the fun. The Virtual 5k could bring even more people to the event because it is so easy to participate from anywhere, at any time. A team could be made up of family members, high school or college cross country teams looking for fitness and competition, an office group, you name it!”

The organizers also believe that the event offers an important opportunity for supporters who, especially in these challenging times, seek ways to do something positive and proactive while still being safe. “Folks joining the Virtual 5k not only support the New Life mission, they also are a welcome part of a community doing something that matters,” said Yates. “That’s especially important right now. And, running in the virtual 5k is a healthy thing to do. Everyone wins.”

Carmen Luisi of Holliston was the top female runner in the 2019 Trail Run (at age 13!), and she’s looking forward to the Virtual 5k this time around. “This is a very important cause, even greater now because people are struggling financially with the current pandemic,” she said.

Dan Haley, of Wayland, said he will run the Virtual 5k this year with his family. “My wife and 12 year old daughter and I had a wonderful time at last year’s 5K,” he said. “With everything in the near term shutting down, we were excited to hear that the New Life event is going virtual. One of our goals as a family as we navigate this strange, temporary reality is to continuously reach out to help others. Another is to keep getting exercise! So this checks both boxes, and gives us something worthwhile and active to do as a family.”

Mark Silva is a partner at the law firm Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP, a sponsor of the event. He plans to run the race for the first time this year. “At a time when we’re all cooped up in our homes looking for something to do, looking for a way to help,” he said, “the 5K is giving us the opportunity to support an incredible organization… while being completely flexible on approach.” He added, “We plan on doing the 5K as a family this year – my wife will run and I am planning to bike the 5K with the kids.”

Kristin Chisum of Wayland will also run the Virtual 5k again with her son Luke. “We are thrilled that the race committee has come up with a way for the race to go on,” she said. “We live near the woods near Walden Pond so that’s where we’ll be.” She added: “I know that we will finish our 5K again this year with a feeling of gratitude – thankful for this group of people that have found a way to change people’s lives and have provided this 5K as a way for us to do our own little part.”

Participants in the New Life Virtual 5k will be encouraged to post photos of their participation with the hashtag #NewLifeStillRunning or send an email to trailrun@newlifefb.org. The registration page reads, in part, “It is our hope that sharing everyone’s fun photos and stories will bring joy to our New Life community and inspire other people far and wide to join the cause.” The organizers made it clear that they want more ideas from supporters about how to make the event fun and accessible to all. Ideas are coming in already, including filming clips of virtual bystanders cheering on the runners, and asking kids to create colorful yard signs.

The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area.

To register, go to www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k.  Those interested in being a sponsor or making a financial contribution are encouraged to visit www.newlifefb.org.

Medfield COVID-19 Resiliency Effort

Please consider Donating to the Medfield COVID-19 Resiliency Effort.

As the Local Foundation serving our town, the Medfield Foundation, Inc. (MFi) has launched an effort to provide grants to residents who are experiencing significant financial challenges caused by the COVID-19 public health emergency.

The MFi Public Need Fund is the vehicle through which the Medfield Foundation allocates money to support the public need in town. Donations made directly to the Public Need Fund benefit local residents who find themselves in difficult circumstances and who need a helping hand. On an annual basis, the funds available to address the needs of the community are raised through the generosity of the extended Medfield community (you!) who volunteer and participate in the annual Medfield Foundation Angel Run.

Due to the current unprecedented COVID-19 public health emergency, many in our community are experiencing financial hardships due to lack of income, lack of childcare, more people in the home that need to be fed, and so many other issues. We anticipate that the needs will significantly outpace our current resources.

The Public Need fund helps Medfield residents who are experiencing temporary financial set backs. It is for residents who, usually through no fault of their own, are experiencing financial hardship due to health matters, sudden deaths, job loss, etc. The money is used as a bridge so they can transition from one situation to the next without losing their homes, services, etc. The money in the past has been used for rent, electric bills, car repairs, medical bills, and more. It is for temporary emergency situations. The requests are vetted upon receipt and if they fit our criteria, we pass the requests on to two social workers and a member of the clergy and the three of them administer the funds.

100% of all funds donated to the Public Need Fund go to the public need cause. If you use Network for Good, they take a small percentage for transaction fees. If you send a check, there is no administrative fee. All donations are 100% tax deductible under the law.

In order to meet the immediate local need it is our hope that generous donors will join us to support the good work being done during these challenging and uncertain times by making a donation. Information on how to donate can be found online at https://www.medfieldfoundation.org/give.

Medfield Foundation launches appeal for summer camp fund

Medfield Foundation launches appeal for summer camp fund

Many adults and children have happy memories of summer camp. From a traditional experience playing in the woods, swimming in a pond or making arts and crafts to skill building and other types of specialized camps, many Medfielders cherish these summer camp experiences and the friends they made. How would you feel if you never had the opportunity to go to camp?

Before the summer camp season begins, the Medfield Foundation board wants the town to know that there are a significant number of local families whose children yearn to attend camp, but simply can’t afford it. Due to difficult financial situations at home, many children are unable to attend summer camps. It can be challenging to grow up in an affluent community such as Medfield and not have access to the development opportunities, fun and life-long friendships that summer camps can provide.

After first responding to a specific significant need three years ago, the MFi board established the Summer Camp Fund. This fund has become a popular way for people with the financial means to do so to give back to the Medfield community. The MFi board is now in its third year of the fund, and, as in years past, is looking to raise $5,000 to assist as many families as possible to give their children the ability to attend summer camp.

The Medfield Foundation is asking people to make a tax-deductible donation to help Medfield children attend summer camp. There are two easy ways to make a donation:

Send a check to: Medfield Foundation PO Box 745 Medfield, MA 02052. Please make the check out to Medfield Foundation, Inc. and write “CAMP” in the memo line.

Use this link to donate: http://medfieldfoundation.org/donate/

If you would like more information before donating, contact Rose Colleran, Medfield Foundation Summer Camp Fund Chair (617-947-4896 or camp@medfieldfoundation.org) or Medfield Foundation Treasurer, Abby Marble (508-361-9825 or treasurer@medfieldfoundation.org).

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund insures Medfield’s future

The initial newsletter of the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund appears below.  It focuses on the recipients of the inaugural round of Legacy Fund grants, who are creating exciting things for the town’s future:

  • the Medfield Rail Trail’s connection to the Bay Colony Rail Trail,
  • the Cultural Alliance of Medfield’s cultural arts facility at the former MSH site, and
  • MCAP parlayed its $5,000  Legacy Fund grant into a $625,000 Federal grant.

Angel Run

Dear Angel Run Nation,

You did it again! You came out in good cheer and with bells on to make the 2019 Medfield Foundation Angel Run a great success!  Because of your participation, those in our community who need some extra assistance will have their needs met. The generosity of time, talent and enthusiasm from all is the reason we put this event on year after year. Together we are building a stronger Medfield and truly helping our fellow community members.

We Need Your Help!

As you probably know, the Angel Run is organized by volunteers from the community and we cannot do it without people being generous with their time and skills. As we like to say, “the Angel Run doesn’t run itself!”

After six years as a co-chair of the Angel Run and the person behind the amazing decorations and entertainment on the race course, our Race Course Coordinator has now retired. We are looking for a new Race Course Coordinator to pick up and run the effort. This is a critical leadership role for the Angel Run for someone with great project management and organizational skills.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

  • Corporate Sponsorships team
  • Decorations team
  • Post-Event Party team
  • Publicity team
  • Race Course Coordinator
  • Registration & Reporting team
  • Shirts & Bibs team

We have an experienced group of leaders and a great team that work closely together and will help any new volunteers with any questions. And don’t worry, we only meet in person to kick-off the planning and to do a wrap-up so you won’t be bogged down by lots of meetings.

We’d love to have your involvement. Please email us at angelrun@medfieldfoundation.org and let us know if you would like to help or if you have any questions.

Inaugural MFi Legacy Fund grant wins MCAP a huge Federal grant

Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund Grant Pays Huge Dividends to Medfield

When the Medfield Youth Outreach team from Medfield Cares About Prevention (MCAP) submitted a grant request to the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund team to hire Bright Solutions Consulting to review and assist with writing MCAP’s federal Drug Free Communities grant application, it seemed like a long shot. Those involved all believed that the goal of making Medfield a recognized Drug Free Community was worth pursuing.

The Legacy Fund team took a chance on MCAP and awarded it a $5,000 grant in November 2018 and MCAP immediately went to work with the consultant on their federal grant application. The grant request was submitted in early 2019 and the team waited for the big announcement. On November 6, 2019 it was announced that MCAP was awarded a FY 2019 Drug-Free Communities Support Program grant in the amount of $625,000 paid over five years by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, in cooperation with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This grant will allow the coalition to hire a full-time prevention coordinator who will carry out evidence-based strategies aimed at preventing youth substance use in the Medfield community, services that have been proven to reduce substance abuse in other towns.

“The MCAP coalition owes the success of the DFC grant application to the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund grant, which allowed MCAP to hire an experienced grant writer,” said Chelsea Goldstein-Walsh LICSW, the Interim Director of Medfield Youth Outreach. “We are looking forward to launching a proactive and comprehensive effort to decrease youth substance use and promote wellness in the community.”

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund is an endowment established for the long-term benefit of the Medfield community which will also engage in annual grant-making to support community-driven projects. “This is exactly how we see the funds from the Legacy Fund being used to benefit Medfield,” said Todd Trehubenko, co-chair of the MFi Legacy Fund. “We think of the grants we can provide to be like an accelerant, helping add fuel to help grow programs and services that benefit Medfield residents.”

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund’s fundraising goal of $1,000,000 will enable the fund to grant annual funding requests. They are currently looking for founders/investors to help build the endowment which will enable this level of giving back to the community.

About Medfield Foundation

The Medfield Foundation (MFi) is a 100% volunteer run 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable corporation whose mission is to enrich the lives of Medfield residents, build a stronger community, and facilitate the raising and allocation of private funds for public needs in the town of Medfield. Since its inception in 2001, the Medfield Foundation has raised over $2,300,000 (Yes, two million three hundred thousand dollars!) to support community-wide initiatives in Medfield.

MFi was founded based on the realization that some residents were interested in contributing more than town taxes to support projects and services that would enrich life in Medfield. You are urged to go to http://medfieldfoundation.org to learn more.
