New Life Virtual 5k

New Life Virtual 5k open to May 10

The New Life Virtual 5K is still open for runners, walkers and more through May 10. The event benefits New Life Furniture Bank of MA and its mission to provide essential home furnishings to those in need.

Runners and walkers register the same way they would for a conventional run, at www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k, where they can also create or join a team. Participants create their own 5k route, or use fitness apps. Teams or individuals may even choose to row 5k on erg machines, or to bike. Entrants complete their personal 5k anytime up to May 10, and runners and walkers log their times on Racewire. On May 11, results will be posted and awards will be given in traditional categories, as well as in new, creative categories like most creative course. Participants are encouraged to post photos with the hashtag #NewLifeStillRunning or send an email to trailrun@newlifefb.org. Over 250 people have already registered for the event, including runners from as far away as Melbourne, Australia.

The Virtual 5k offers an important opportunity for supporters who seek a way to do something positive and proactive while still being safe. “Folks joining the Virtual 5k not only support the New Life mission, they also are a welcome part of a community doing something that matters,” said Ron Yates, co-founder of New Life Furniture Bank. “That’s especially important right now. And, running in the virtual 5k is a healthy thing to do. Everyone wins.”

The Virtual 5k raises funds that are critical to New Life’s ability to serve its clients. “The economic impact of COVID-19 is hitting our clients hard,” said Rich Purnell, Executive Director of New Life. He added that, “in the coming months, we anticipate a surge in requests as many families will be displaced from their homes.”

New Life Furniture Bank of MA collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need. The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area. New Life provides a meaningful option for local residents who are downsizing, renovating or disposing of a loved one’s property.

To register, go to www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k. Those interested in being a sponsor or making a financial contribution are encouraged to visit www.newlifefb.org.

Grocery shopping & delivery service

Medfield High School students, Ben O’Neil, Brandon Sahr, and Owen Brand, are offering to do the shopping for Medfield residents who cannot do so for themselves because of COVID-19 concerns.

Orders must be place at their website (the link is below) and there is no charge.

“COVID-19 puts our community at risk, and some people are at a greater risk than others. It may be difficult for these people to achieve once previously basic tasks outside their homes due to the chance of infection. Therefore, we decided to create this program based upon bringing groceries to those in our community who are at risk when doing so themselves.”

New Life Still Running with a Virtual 5k

By Tod Dimmick

The pandemic has affected every community event this spring, including the annual New Life 5k Trail Run, an event that raises more than 20% of the New Life Furniture Bank’s budget. This Massachusetts charity serves nearly 700 hundred households every year, including individuals, families, single mothers, seniors and veterans, as they come out of homelessness. New Life collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need.

Faced with the challenge of having to cancel its annual 5k Trail Run, New Life sought creative and safe ways to hold their event, which raises funds that are critical to New Life’s ability to serve its clients. “The economic impact of COVID-19 is hitting our clients hard,” said Rich Purnell, Executive Director of New Life. He added that, “in the coming months, we anticipate a surge in requests as many families will be displaced from their homes.”

After careful thought, the trail run organizing committee announced a new “virtual 5k.”  Runners and walkers register the same way they would for a conventional run, at www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k, where they can also create or join a team. Participants create their own 5k route, or use fitness apps like MapMyRun and Strava. Teams or individuals may even choose to row 5k on erg machines, or to bike. Entrants complete their personal 5k anytime between April 13 and May 10, and runners and walkers log their times on Racewire. On May 11, results will be posted and awards will be given in traditional categories, as well as in new, creative categories like most creative course.

Ron Yates, co-founder of the New Life Furniture Bank, said “we recognize that this is a totally new way to do something like this, and that is part of the fun. The Virtual 5k could bring even more people to the event because it is so easy to participate from anywhere, at any time. A team could be made up of family members, high school or college cross country teams looking for fitness and competition, an office group, you name it!”

The organizers also believe that the event offers an important opportunity for supporters who, especially in these challenging times, seek ways to do something positive and proactive while still being safe. “Folks joining the Virtual 5k not only support the New Life mission, they also are a welcome part of a community doing something that matters,” said Yates. “That’s especially important right now. And, running in the virtual 5k is a healthy thing to do. Everyone wins.”

Carmen Luisi of Holliston was the top female runner in the 2019 Trail Run (at age 13!), and she’s looking forward to the Virtual 5k this time around. “This is a very important cause, even greater now because people are struggling financially with the current pandemic,” she said.

Dan Haley, of Wayland, said he will run the Virtual 5k this year with his family. “My wife and 12 year old daughter and I had a wonderful time at last year’s 5K,” he said. “With everything in the near term shutting down, we were excited to hear that the New Life event is going virtual. One of our goals as a family as we navigate this strange, temporary reality is to continuously reach out to help others. Another is to keep getting exercise! So this checks both boxes, and gives us something worthwhile and active to do as a family.”

Mark Silva is a partner at the law firm Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP, a sponsor of the event. He plans to run the race for the first time this year. “At a time when we’re all cooped up in our homes looking for something to do, looking for a way to help,” he said, “the 5K is giving us the opportunity to support an incredible organization… while being completely flexible on approach.” He added, “We plan on doing the 5K as a family this year – my wife will run and I am planning to bike the 5K with the kids.”

Kristin Chisum of Wayland will also run the Virtual 5k again with her son Luke. “We are thrilled that the race committee has come up with a way for the race to go on,” she said. “We live near the woods near Walden Pond so that’s where we’ll be.” She added: “I know that we will finish our 5K again this year with a feeling of gratitude – thankful for this group of people that have found a way to change people’s lives and have provided this 5K as a way for us to do our own little part.”

Participants in the New Life Virtual 5k will be encouraged to post photos of their participation with the hashtag #NewLifeStillRunning or send an email to trailrun@newlifefb.org. The registration page reads, in part, “It is our hope that sharing everyone’s fun photos and stories will bring joy to our New Life community and inspire other people far and wide to join the cause.” The organizers made it clear that they want more ideas from supporters about how to make the event fun and accessible to all. Ideas are coming in already, including filming clips of virtual bystanders cheering on the runners, and asking kids to create colorful yard signs.

The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area.

To register, go to www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k.  Those interested in being a sponsor or making a financial contribution are encouraged to visit www.newlifefb.org.

Angel Run

Dear Angel Run Nation,

You did it again! You came out in good cheer and with bells on to make the 2019 Medfield Foundation Angel Run a great success!  Because of your participation, those in our community who need some extra assistance will have their needs met. The generosity of time, talent and enthusiasm from all is the reason we put this event on year after year. Together we are building a stronger Medfield and truly helping our fellow community members.

We Need Your Help!

As you probably know, the Angel Run is organized by volunteers from the community and we cannot do it without people being generous with their time and skills. As we like to say, “the Angel Run doesn’t run itself!”

After six years as a co-chair of the Angel Run and the person behind the amazing decorations and entertainment on the race course, our Race Course Coordinator has now retired. We are looking for a new Race Course Coordinator to pick up and run the effort. This is a critical leadership role for the Angel Run for someone with great project management and organizational skills.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

  • Corporate Sponsorships team
  • Decorations team
  • Post-Event Party team
  • Publicity team
  • Race Course Coordinator
  • Registration & Reporting team
  • Shirts & Bibs team

We have an experienced group of leaders and a great team that work closely together and will help any new volunteers with any questions. And don’t worry, we only meet in person to kick-off the planning and to do a wrap-up so you won’t be bogged down by lots of meetings.

We’d love to have your involvement. Please email us at angelrun@medfieldfoundation.org and let us know if you would like to help or if you have any questions.

Hi All! Please consider joining Medfield Helping Hands, formerly Medfield Neighborhood Brigade. MHH is an initiative of the Medfield Foundation (MFi)! We are looking for volunteers and would love to have you be apart of it!

We have just posted the new list of Birthday Wishes. We are hoping that you will consider sponsoring a Medfield child with two gift cards for $25.00 each. This program has been developed with Medfield Youth Outreach to support families that are currently supported by Medfield Youth Outreach as they go through a temporary crisis. We hope the Birthday Wishes program will allow these families to distribute the funds they may have spent on a birthday gift back into bills that are more crucial in sustaining their basic needs. If you would like to sponsor a child whose birthday is in November through January please visit our site, choose the child you would like to sponsor and assign that child to you. The gift cards give the parents the chance to purchase something special for their child.

We need all of you to make this site work! Please join us by going to LotsahelpingHands.com, join community, search Medfield Helping Hands. We already have needs waiting to be taken and families in need of support. Thank you!

Pinky Meader Memorial Garden

Pinky Meader Memorial Garden Dedicated

On Friday, September 6, the Medfield Garden Club dedicated a new civic planting in Medfield, the Pinky Meader Memorial Garden, affectionately known as Pinky’s Garden. Members of the garden club and Pinky’s family gathered behind the Unitarian Church in Medfield overlooking Meetinghouse Pond and the Dwight Derby House to dedicate the granite-inscribed bench and the new garden to a dear friend, gardening colleague, mentor and long-time Medfield volunteer who passed away and left a deep legacy of horticultural knowledge and civic beautification to the Town of Medfield and members of the Medfield Garden Club.

We invite the community to visit our lovely new site on the Unitarian Church lawn at 26 North Street and to enjoy some repose in one of the most beautiful settings in Medfield.

Stephen M. Nolan Leadership Award at the Lawyers Clearinghouse

This from the article on the first awarding of the the Lawyers Clearinghouse’s Leadership Award now renamed the Stephen M. Nolan Leadership Award, lets us know that Steve Nolan volunteers a lot in the legal world, just as he did in Medfield. –

“Liz Lintz then introduced event co-chairs Rick Henken and Tim Sullivan to present the Stephen M. Nolan Leadership Award—previously known only as the Leadership Award—to Chrystal. The Clearinghouse had recently renamed the award to recognize the incredible contributions of longtime board member Steve Nolan, a partner at Nolan Sheehan Patten.

“Steve’s dedication to the Clearinghouse over the past 27 years has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Liz said. “We wanted to honor Steve for all that he’s done in a special and lasting way.”

About

The Lawyers Clearinghouse harnesses the power of Massachusetts legal professionals to strengthen communities. We do this by connecting Massachusetts nonprofits and the homeless with pro bono lawyers. With limited resources, we maximize community impact by streamlining the way lawyers volunteer their skills.

Through our connections to a network of lawyers at top Massachusetts law firms and corporations, we:

The Clearinghouse Model

The Clearinghouse bridges the gap between lawyers who want to volunteer and nonprofits and homeless people who need their help. Lawyers want to take pro bono cases, but scarcely have the time to research opportunities. Nonprofits need legal help, but can rarely afford an attorney. The homeless and at-risk population needs someone to speak for them. Through our connections to a network of lawyers at top Massachusetts law firms, we serve several communities.

Volunteers Needed for Styrofoam Recycling

Volunteers are needed to help receive, sort, and pack styrofoam at the Medfield Transfer Station on Saturday, May 18.  Since only clean, white Expanded Polystyrene (#6)  packing blocks and coolers can be accepted for recycling, all foam collected must be inspected before it is packed.   Residents should remove cardboard, glues, tapes, labels, and stickers before bringing foam for recycling.  No take-out food containers are accepted, as guidelines for recycling are strict in order to clean up the process and final product of styrofoam recycling.
