Medfield Foundation launches appeal for summer camp fund

Many adults and children have happy memories of summer camp. From a traditional experience playing in the woods, swimming in a pond or making arts and crafts to skill building and other types of specialized camps, many Medfielders cherish these summer camp experiences and the friends they made. How would you feel if you never had the opportunity to go to camp?

Before the summer camp season begins, the Medfield Foundation board wants the town to know that there are a significant number of local families whose children yearn to attend camp, but simply can’t afford it. Due to difficult financial situations at home, many children are unable to attend summer camps. It can be challenging to grow up in an affluent community such as Medfield and not have access to the development opportunities, fun and life-long friendships that summer camps can provide.

After first responding to a specific significant need three years ago, the MFi board established the Summer Camp Fund. This fund has become a popular way for people with the financial means to do so to give back to the Medfield community. The MFi board is now in its third year of the fund, and, as in years past, is looking to raise $5,000 to assist as many families as possible to give their children the ability to attend summer camp.

The Medfield Foundation is asking people to make a tax-deductible donation to help Medfield children attend summer camp. There are two easy ways to make a donation:

Dear Angel Run Nation,

You did it again! You came out in good cheer and with bells on to make the 2019 Medfield Foundation Angel Run a great success!  Because of your participation, those in our community who need some extra assistance will have their needs met. The generosity of time, talent and enthusiasm from all is the reason we put this event on year after year. Together we are building a stronger Medfield and truly helping our fellow community members.

 

We Need Your Help!

As you probably know, the Angel Run is organized by volunteers from the community and we cannot do it without people being generous with their time and skills. As we like to say, “the Angel Run doesn’t run itself!”

After six years as a co-chair of the Angel Run and the person behind the amazing decorations and entertainment on the race course, our Race Course Coordinator has now retired. We are looking for a new Race Course Coordinator to pick up and run the effort. This is a critical leadership role for the Angel Run for someone with great project management and organizational skills.

Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund Grant Pays Huge Dividends to Medfield

 When the Medfield Youth Outreach team from Medfield Cares About Prevention (MCAP) submitted a grant request to the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund team to hire Bright Solutions Consulting to review and assist with writing MCAP’s federal Drug Free Communities grant application, it seemed like a long shot. Those involved all believed that the goal of making Medfield a recognized Drug Free Community was worth pursuing.

The Legacy Fund team took a chance on MCAP and awarded it a $5,000 grant in November 2018 and MCAP immediately went to work with the consultant on their federal grant application. The grant request was submitted in early 2019 and the team waited for the big announcement. On November 6, 2019 it was announced that MCAP was awarded a FY 2019 Drug-Free Communities Support Program grant in the amount of $625,000 paid over five years by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, in cooperation with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This grant will allow the coalition to hire a full-time prevention coordinator who will carry out evidence-based strategies aimed at preventing youth substance use in the Medfield community, services that have been proven to reduce substance abuse in other towns.

“The MCAP coalition owes the success of the DFC grant application to the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund grant, which allowed MCAP to hire an experienced grant writer,” said Chelsea Goldstein-Walsh LICSW, the Interim Director of Medfield Youth Outreach. “We are looking forward to launching a proactive and comprehensive effort to decrease youth substance use and promote wellness in the community.”

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund is an endowment established for the long-term benefit of the Medfield community which will also engage in annual grant-making to support community-driven projects. “This is exactly how we see the funds from the Legacy Fund being used to benefit Medfield,” said Todd Trehubenko, co-chair of the MFi Legacy Fund. “We think of the grants we can provide to be like an accelerant, helping add fuel to help grow programs and services that benefit Medfield residents.”

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund’s fundraising goal of $1,000,000 will enable the fund to grant annual funding requests. They are currently looking for founders/investors to help build the endowment which will enable this level of giving back to the community.

Angel Run Early-Bird Registration Ends November 8th

Join us for the 14th running (or walking) of the Angel Run on Sunday, December 8 at 12:30pm.

Early registration ends on Friday, November 8th so register now for $25.00 per person and receive your commemorative shirt.  You can still register online after November 8th, however the price goes up to $30.00 per person and you will not receive a shirt.

The Angel Run course is a USATF certified 5K. The Angel Run uses chip timing to ensure accurate results for all participants. The race begins and ends at Medfield High School.  There will be a special separate starting corral for competitive runners. MCAP gets $625K Federal grant

Chelsea Goldstein-WalshChelsea Goldstein-Walsh, Interim Director of Medfield Youth Outreach announced this afternoon that Medfield Cares About Prevention (MCAP) (www.MedfieldCares.org) was today awarded a Drug-Free Communities grant of $625,000, to fund a Substance Use Prevention Coordinator who will run MCAP’s  prevention efforts.  The Federal grant will pay MCAP $125,000 per year for five years,  with the hope that the Substance Use Prevention Coordinator position will become permanent after five years.  About 150 DFC grants nation wide were awarded this year.  Towns that have received past DFC grants have seen a statistical decrease is substance abuse.

Medfield Youth Outreach, first through Dawn Alcott and now Chelsea, initiated, oversee, and manage the MCAP coalition.  MCAP had come exceedingly close to getting the Federal grant in prior years it applied. 

This year, however, MCAP had the added benefit of having received a $5,000 grant from the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund’s 2018 inaugural round of grants, which monies MCAP used to hire a grant writer, thereby parlaying the Legacy Fund grant into the $625,000 of benefit for the Town of Medfield.

Medfield Foundation (MFi) Volunteer Awards 2019

The enthusiasm was palpable at the Medfield Foundation Awards Ceremony honoring this year’s volunteers at the Center at Medfield, on Sunday, March 31.  A common theme of the eleven recipients was that volunteering is its own reward.

 

“I like doing community service because there is no better feeling than helping someone out,” said Sam Joline, a Medfield High School student, and one of the nominees for the Youth Award.

 

The Medfield Foundation (MFi) started the Volunteer Awards in 2008 as a way to recognize people who freely give of their time to help others and make Medfield a better place.  Each honoree receives a $100 donation in their name to their favorite charity. The awards categories are: Youth Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Award.

 

Medfield High School student, Maeve Devlin, was honored as Youth Volunteer of the Year for her leadership role with Best Buddies, a club that matches high school students up with students with disabilities.  “Disabilities do not define them,” said Maeve, who has volunteered at the Special Olympics since first grade.

 

Other Medfield High School nominees for Youth Volunteer of the Year include Hannah Rogan for her efforts with Miss Amazing as a buddy, dance workshop helper and now Co-Director.  Morgan Caro found her calling in helping at Golden Opportunities for Independence (GOFI), a nonprofit that breeds, raises, and trains service dogs for disabled members of the community.  She is looking forward to working with some new puppies. Sam Joline was nominated for his volunteer work at the Medfield After School Program (MAP) and at New Life Furniture Exchange in Millis.

 

The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Pat Casey for his 17 years on the Economic Development Committee, and for his work on the Medfield State Hospital Master Planning Committee, where he was a “conciliator and collaborator” in producing a 210-page report using his “data analytic” expertise.  The committee met every two weeks for four years.

 

Other Volunteer of the Year nominees include Dick Judge, whose passion is restoring Medfield’s 300-year-old Kingsbury Grist Mill.  “The grist mill represents to me a Currier & Ives view of Medfield,” said Dick, who is always looking for people to donate their time, materials and/or money to continue the mill’s restoration.  Another nominee, Michele Feinsilver Hoye, is all about gardening, whether as president of the Garden Club, teaching through her native shade garden at the back of the Medfield Public Library or as one of four administrators of the newly formed Peak House Heritage Center.  Michele helped restore the Peak House gardens with plants that were around during the time of the early settlers. Nominee Liz Sandeman is passionate about New England Donor Services. “Twenty-two people die every day on the waiting list,” said Liz, who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness.  “My sister was one of them, she was 54.” She explained that you can register as an organ and tissue donor with any condition. A busy mother of five, nominee Michelle Barrett is a driving force in the Medfield schools and community, as a past MCPE president, past president of New ‘n Towne, St. Edward’s Church faith formation classes, girls’ lacrosse coach and on just about every school event.  Michele said she volunteers so the teachers and nurses can do their jobs.

 

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Steve Nolan and Marie Zack Nolan, who have been volunteering in Medfield for more than 30 years, on just about every town committee.  Marie led the Medfield Energy Committee to reduce Medfield’s municipal buildings’ energy use. Through her efforts, the town’s energy cost was reduced from $1.2 million in 2008 to $670,000 in 2017, a 44-percent reduction.

 

Steve used his legal expertise, calm and sense of humor to aid in the development of the 17 Affordable Homes at Allendale when the state was holding up progress.  His work on the Medfield State Hospital property earned him Citizen Planner of the Year from the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Planning Association. He was also instrumental in the planning that led to a thriving, downtown Medfield.  “The strength of the town is in its volunteers,” said Steve, who finds volunteering rewarding, enriching and social.

 

The recipients were presented certificates from State Senator Paul Feeney, State Representative Denise Garlick, State Representative Shawn Dooley and Medfield Selectman Gus Murby.  U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy III sent certificates.

MFi Legacy Fund’s School Bus & Motorcycle at New ‘N Towne’s Touch-a-Truck Saturday

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund sponsored the school bus at the New ‘N Towne Touch-a-Truck event last Saturday morning at the Blake Middle School parking lot, and for good measure brought along the official Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund motorcycle (thank you MFi President, Evan Weisenfeld!).

Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund stickers were placed on every child, and most of the DPW workers.

The wheels on the bus may “go round and round,” but the door to the bus did not fully open on its own, so the bus had its own door man.

The Legacy Fund is an initial $1 m. endowed fund that the Medfield Foundation is raising to assure that in the future the town will be able to do more of the special things that make Medfield the great community that it has been for all of us and our families.
