Although this time of year is stressful for most people it can be devastating for those struggling with a temporary crisis of some kind and this year with the added stresses of COVID-19, “Medfield Helping Hands” hopes to get more Medfield residents to join in helping their neighbors in need.https://72490c44d4a364f5c538a333c0a49828.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html
Some people may remember this group when it was called “Medfield Angels” then it was became “Medfield Neighbor Brigade” and now it is the “Medfield Lotsa Helping Hands”. For many years this group of volunteers has been making meals for Medfield families dealing with a temporary crisis.
Joining simply means that you will be on an email list and receive notifications of local needs. Once you receive an email, you will log into your account and if possible sign up to help make and deliver a meal (you choose the date) based on the Volunteer Calendar provided.
The Medfield Helping Hands is a volunteer network that supports Medfield families in temporary crisis and they support other Medfield volunteer organizations as well.

Winter Lights display from Dec. 17 – 20, from 5 pm – 9 pm nightly at the former Medfield State Hospital.
Come revel in the nearly mile-long sprawl of light displays and decorations including a living nativity! Tickets are $20 per vehicle and must be purchased in advance by visiting EventBrite. No visitors will be permitted without a ticket and no tickets will be available for sale on site. The event will run regardless of weather. All proceeds go to support nonprofit organizations Medfield TV and the Cultural Alliance of Medfield.

A story of woe might be what you expect when you speak with Rich Purnell, Executive Director at New Life Furniture Bank of MA, when you ask him to recap this year at the non-profit. How could he and a group of volunteers successfully continue to serve clients coming out of homelessness in the midst of a pandemic?
“We had big plans for 2020,” said Purnell. “We were prepared to collect more home furnishings and reach more clients than ever before. Then COVID-19 hit Massachusetts, and New Life’s operations halted… but not for long. “We shut down for a week, revamped our operations, and reopened, thanks to a massive volunteer effort. I’m proud to say we were the first furniture bank in Massachusetts to maintain our mission with a new model and safety precautions.”
Purnell and his team adjusted their approach by switching from clients visiting in-person, to “shopping” at an online “store”. Purnell identified software that would work for the furniture bank. Volunteers upload photos of household goods so clients can make their choices virtually. After they “shop” on-line, other volunteers bundle and prepare the clients’ selections for pick-up, and the next day moving trucks pick up and deliver the goods to the clients’ apartments.
Many of New Life’s clients spent months or even years in homeless shelters before obtaining housing assistance. Most do not have the resources to obtain household furnishings and avoid debt without the help of a furniture bank.
Thursday, October 29th is the launch of the “Changing World. Changing Needs. Changing Lives.” campaign. These funds raised will enable New Life’s to serve more households.
“Although we don’t know what is coming in the days, weeks, and months ahead, it is our supporters that keep New Life innovating to meet the rising challenge,” said Purnell. “A gift of any amount will ensure that individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness have the necessary furniture and household items they need to live in security, comfort, and hope.”

MCPE Launches One Medfield Fundraisers
With the school year underway, Medfield Coalition for Public Education (MCPE) is hosting a series of activities to bring the community together as One Medfield–all in support of our K-12 public schools.
In the month of October, community members can show their town spirit by signing up to have a special logo painted on their driveways. Between October 5 and November 15, let’s continue to be active.
Join the Medfield Movement Challenge and walk, run, bike, rollerblade, swim or skip your way to 20.52 miles (a play on the best zip code in the world, 02052!). Sign up to receive a weekly motivational email, a log to track your progress, and a t-shirt upon completion.
Then, on November 19 at 8:00pm, MCPE launches its “Medfield Night In” series with a virtual flower arranging class in conjunction with Alice’s Table. All you need are scissors and water. Fall flowers and a decorative container will be delivered to your door, anywhere in the USA, the day before the class. Sign up now for one of the few remaining spots!

After being closed for furniture and household goods donations for the past few months due to COVID-19, New Life Furniture Bank of MA is pleased to announce that it has re-opened. New Life has updated its drop-off and pick-up procedures in order to keep its donors and volunteers safe and socially distanced.
New Life is dependent upon and is grateful for furniture and household items given by donors in the community, however, due to the pandemic, the furniture bank is only able to accept dropped off items scheduled via appointment. Those interested in donating, may go on-line to: newlifefb.org/drop-off to schedule a Saturday appointment between the hours of 9:30 and 11:30. When making an appointment, donors should carefully review the list of accepted items and be sure to note the process guidelines that donors are asked to follow. Also please note, for access the shipping dock when dropping off items, donors now need to enter the building’s parking lot via the West Street entrance.
New Life is also pleased to announce that it is resuming its furniture pick-up service in the towns of Medfield, Walpole, Norfolk and Norwood. Pick-up appointments may be scheduled on-line at newlifefb.org/pickup. In order to ensure the safety of the volunteers, drivers will only pick-up furniture and household items from donors’ garages or curbsides.
New Life is a volunteer-driven organization. A team of over 200 individuals ensures that individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness receive furniture and necessary household items. If interested in volunteering at New Life, please contact Volunteer Coordinator, Amanda Wolfe at amanda@newlifefb.org.
New Life has grown tremendously in its first six years of operation. The organization is seen as an important contributor in the battle against homelessness in Massachusetts. Since its inception, New Life has served over 2,764 households, and has gained a reputation across eastern Massachusetts as a reliable resource that provides those in need with quality, gently-used home furnishings.

Two of Medield’s best, Park Street Books and the Medfield Food Cupboard team up this Saturday 10-4 –
Stop by Medfield’s beloved Park Street Books on Saturday, May 23 between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. Participants are encouraged to bring their camera and take a photo with the adorable blue truck as described in the popular children’s book The Little Blue Truck — a story by Alice Schertle about friends helping friends. While stopping by for a fun photo, please consider bringing a bag of food to donate to the Medfield Food Cupboard. Requested kid-friendly food items include: peanut butter, jelly, cereal, crackers, packets of oatmeal and cookies. Donors are encouraged to post their cute photos on Medfield Food Cupboard’s Facebook page. The rain date is set for Sunday, May 24.
