Teams Collecting Food on Thanksgiving

On Thanksgiving Day, Medfield and Dover-Sherborn will renew acquaintances on the gridiron in the annual end of the season clash between the two Tri-Valley League rivals. But this year’s game will also bring the two sides together in a common fight against hunger in the community.

Medfield High senior George Sawan and D-S senior Will McMillen have arranged a collection at the Thanksgiving Day game, which is annually the biggest crowd of the season, to support the Medfield Food Cupboard.

The Food Cupboard helps families in and around Medfield keep food on the table and, especially during the holiday season and over the winter, it needs the community’s support to make that mission happen.

To help the cause, McMillen and Sawan are asking that each fan bring one non-perishable food item to the game on Thursday, Nov. 26.

“We never know, any of us, what is going to happen in our lives and it could be that someday we will be the ones that need a little help,” said Sawan.

“During the holiday times things can be especially tough for these families as they try to make things a little more happy and festive without a lot of resources.”

Although Sawan and McMillen have not met, the two seniors are spearheading the Thanksgiving game effort and are turning it into a friendly rivalry to see which set of fans will donate the most.

Sawan explained, “It may seem like just a small gesture but small gestures add up and create stronger communities.”

“We may be different towns and sports rivals but we all want the same outcome, to support and help those in need.”

Among the items that the Food Cupboard is requesting are chili, beef stew, assorted soups, canned chicken and beef, baked beans, pasta sauces, tomato products, canned pineapple, raisins, large juices, canned vegetables (especially corn, carrots, and peas), sweet and salty snacks, and kid-friendly cereal.

For more information and the full list of items that the Food Cupboard needs, visit http://www.medfieldfoodcupboard.org.

Every year, the battle between the Raiders and the Warriors is significant, but for Sawan this season means a little more because of the off-the-field losses that his teammates have fought through this fall.

“I have been inspired by my teammates and how they have handled their losses. A win would mean everything to us, and I know I am going to play my hardest to make sure that happens, but even if we lose, we know we still have each other to lean on.”

Bike ride 6/7

Bikes Not Bombs (https://bikesnotbombs.org/) is doing four different bike rides to fund raise this coming Sunday, June 7, one of which goes through Medfield.

Bikes to BNB

Today we dropped off at the Bikes Not Bombs bike drive at the Legion the 17 bikes we collected from the swap last summer and over wintered in case any kids from Medfield families in need, as identified by Medfield Youth Outreach worker Dawn Alcott, wanted them as Christmas presents (there were no takers).

Our bike collection adventure began last summer when we retrieved a really nice Specialized bike from the Swap and asked Dawn if she knew anyone who might like it, and the girl identified by Dawn was reportedly so unbelievably delighted to get that bike, that we all thought there might be others who would follow.  Instead, now, those 17 bikes will get shipped by BNB to Central America or the Caribbean, where there are even more families in need, so a great result.  BTW, it looked to me that BNB collected upwards of 75 bikes.

Former Warrant Committee member, David Fischer, was helping BNB to reduce the size of the bikes by loosening and twisting the handle bars and reversing the pedals, along with at least one other Medfield student, judging by the young man’s Warriors T-shirt.

Corrigan family assistance

Dear Medfield Neighbor Brigade,

As many of you have already heard on Sunday, Feb. 22nd Medfield resident, Sean Corrigan, died as a result of a tragic accident. He was a loving husband and father of three beautiful, young children ages 10, 6, and 4. The Corrigan family moved to Medfield from Ireland in the summer of 2013 and quickly established friendships and roots in our community. His loss is devasting to so many. This family is now forced to face the difficult challenge of continuing on without the love and support of Sean.

In times like this we all wish there was something that we could do to help. A fundraising page has been created in the hopes of helping this family to cover the funeral expenses, keeping up with the bills and getting back on their feet. This is a very significant and critical way that we can all support this Medfield family. By donating any amount, large and small, your help will be felt and gratefully appreciated. If you are able to make a donation please click on the following link  http://gfwd.at/1Fsrdy8 This is the same fundraising page that was tweeted out by our Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden today as well.

We will also be supporting this family with meals starting next week. Another email will be coming out shortly with this information.

We are all so blessed to live in a community that truly loves and takes care of each other. Thank you for the difference YOU make for others!

Laurie and Kathleen

Can you help?

Hello Massachusetts friends!  This is Abby Marble.

I am starting a collection for the displaced homeless that are now inundating Boston. If you are following the story, it started with the condemnation of the bridge connecting Boston to it’s largest homeless and rehab facility in Boston on Long Island, an island in Boston Harbor.  These folks were evacuated with no warning and now Boston is trying to figure out how to handle the additional 700 person demand on its current services. I’ve been in touch with the journalist who wrote the most recent article about the crisis. ( see below)   The most critically needed items are listed below.  I am hoping to make a large collection over the next few weeks and then bring them to the South End facility asap and as frequently as my storage fills up. Please consider helping by donating. You can either drop it off at my house (16 Pheasant Rd, Medfield) on the front porch or I can come and pick the item(s) up.  Please consider helping out.

thank you!  abby

Food Cupboard needs donations

From Susan Maritan –

The Medfield Food Cupboard is in Serious Need of Donations.

“Summer is always a difficult time for the Food Cupboard,” said Martha Sherman, a volunteer with the Medfield Food Cupboard. “It’s sort of a perfect storm resulting in bare shelves: our clients’ children are home from school, so families’ food needs are higher. Likewise, Medfield residents are out of town, so food donations are way down. Food drives are not happening as they do the rest of the year, and also, unfortunately, our food collection bin is no longer residing at Shaw’s. As a result, the food on the shelves at the UCC Food Cupboard are the lowest I’ve seen them in a many, many years.”

The Food Cupboard is in need of any and all items, but if you’d like some guidance, the following supplies are always needed:

  • Cereal
  • Juice
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Pasta
  • Pasta sauces
  • Tunafish (water-packed)
  • Canned chicken
  • Canned fruits
  • Canned Vegetables
  • Toilet Paper
  • Paper Towels

Food donations to the Medfield Food Cupboard can be dropped off in the lobby of the the United Church of Christ (496 Main Street, Medfield) or at other local churches. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation may send a check to the Medfield Food Cupboard, PO Box 172, Medfield, MA  02052.

New Life Home Refurnishing

This from Susan Maritan –

New Life Home Refurnishing, a non-profit organization which accepts donations of gently used furniture and household items for individuals and families in need, is asking the public for help. They are in need of household appliances in good condition (toasters, coffee makers and small microwave ovens), bed frames (twin-full and queen) as well as gently used mattresses and box springs (no stains, tears or visible marks).

Medfield residents, Ron Yates and Doug Marshall, Co-Presidents of New Life, want the public to know that donations can be brought to the New Life warehouse 102 Elm Street (Route 27) in Walpole between 9 and 11 AM this Saturday, June 14, or New Life can provide a pick-up.

Please note, this summer New Life will have summer hours. June 14th will be the last Saturday that the warehouse is open for donations until September. Starting June 25th, the warehouse will be open every other Wednesday evening from 6:30 – 8:30 PM for drop offs.

Those interested in donating, scheduling a pick up, volunteering or looking at the schedule of summer hours are encouraged to reference the NewLife web site www.newlifehr.org or may call 774-316-6395.

The mission of NewLife Home Refurnishing is to help individuals and families in transition from the Metro-West and Greater Boston area. The New Life team believes that the opportunity to “shop” from the warehouse of gently used furnishings and household items offers dignity and affirmation to those who have been marginalized.
