Medfield Rail Trail now a Medfield Foundation initiative

Friends of Medfield Rail Trail becomes a MFi initiative

The Friends of the Medfield Rail Trail (FMRT) announced that they will be joining forces with the Medfield Foundation (MFi) to become MFi’s newest initiative!  Established in 2001, MFi has enabled grass roots initiatives like the FMRT to raise private money for the benefit of all of Medfield.

Christian Donner, a longtime member of the FMRT said “we are raising monies for the construction and maintenance of the 1.3 mile stretch of the Bay Colony Rail Trail in Medfield, which will run from Ice House Road to the Dover line, along the former Bay Colony Railroad tracks, now owned by the MBTA.”  The MBTA will lease the railroad right of way to the town without cost for 99 years. It is hoped that the FMRT can eventually run the full seven miles from Medfield to Newton, connecting all of the towns along the way.  This fall, the Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation awarded Medfield with a $100,000 grant.  FMRT needs the generosity of Medfield citizens in order to meet its goal of raising another $100,000.00 so that construction can commence in 2019!

Vote, Donate and Support the Medfield Food Cupboard

On November 6th, Election Day, while casting your vote for the candidates and initiatives that you support, please consider bringing financial or food donations to the polls in support of the Medfield Food Cupboard.  Especially needed items for the fall and winter months are: rice, tuna, spaghetti, jelly/jam.

The polls will be open at The Center at Medfield from 6 AM until 8 PM, and donations may be dropped off any time during this window. Food Cupboard volunteers will be present throughout the day to collect donations and answer any questions you may have.

Those interested in supporting the Medfield Food Cupboard throughout the year may do so by placing unexpired, unopened, shelf-stable food in the collection bins at Shaw’s, Medfield Public Library, Pfaff Center, Senior Center, the Medfield churches, or monetary donations can be made on line at: medfieldfoodcupboard.com or mailed to: PO Box 172, Medfield, MA 02052.

This past week the c communications. In the appeal we ask for the community’s help and support. The Food Cupboard depends on donations of money, food and time to keep our shelves filled and our organization running smoothly. Last year, with the assistance of the community, we were able to provide enough food for our clients to make over 4,000 meals — an accomplishment about which we can all feel proud.

Greetings Angel Run Friends,

Early Bird Registration for the Angel Run closes on October 28 at Midnight. Don’t miss out on the lower price and your chance to get one of the famous Angel Run shirts.

Thank you to those who have already registered. If you have, be sure to pass this email along to your friends so they have the chance to register. If you haven’t already registered, we ask that you not wait until the last minute.

Registration is online at www.medfieldfoundation.org/angel-run. After October 28 you may still register online however the price goes up and there is no shirtincluded. You may also print a registration form to send in by mail. Be sure to send it early as forms received after 10/28 will be considered late.

Once again this year we will be offering bib tag timing to provide you the most accurate time possible and we are back to our official USATF certified 5K route.

Finally we will again have a special separate starting corral for competitive runners as well as a special group for those pushing a sleigh (stroller). Be sure to note if you want to be in one of these sections on your registration.

Rose Colleran and Susan Weisenfeld (above) have co-chaired the Medfield Foundation Angel Run for many years, and today announced that they will do so for two more spectacular, family fun filled Angel Runs, this December 2 and in 2019.

Therefore, the Medfield Foundation is looking for someone interested in learning how to operate the Angel Run over the next fifteen months by apprenticing to these two pros, to learn the ropes, and to then take over running the Angel run to be held in early December 2020.  The Angel Run is Medfield premier family fun event, and raises monies for Medfield families in need.

Greetings Angel Run Friends,

Join us for the 13th running (or walking) of the Angel Run on Sunday, December 2 at 12:30pm!

Registration for the MFi Angel Run is officially open. Registration is available online for $25.00 per person at MedfieldFoundation.org/angel-run and runs through October 28. Register by this date to receive the always popular commemorative Angel Run shirt. After October 28 you can still register online, however the price goes up to $30.00 per person and you will not receive a shirt.

Once again this year we will be offering bib tag timing to provide you the most accurate time possible and a special separate starting corral for competitive runners. You decide if you should belong to that group. Be sure to note this on your registration.

We’ve also got great news to share as well. With the completion of the Philips Street bridge, the Angel Run will be returning to our official 5K route. A map of the route is available when you register or on our website.

New this year – The Sleigh Division!

This year runners pushing strollers can register for the Sleigh Division. Just like Santa speeds through the night with his sleigh, we know that some of our runners speed through the streets of Medfield with their Sleighs (strollers)! Awards will be given for the top male and female runners pushing a sleigh and also for the best decorated sleigh.

Fundraiser helps Medfield kids attend summer camp

MEDFIELD – A local effort to help needy children attend summer camp raised more than $5,000 this summer.

The initiative – organized by the Medfield Foundation – is now in its second year, said foundation member Osler Peterson. With the funds raised through the program, a total of 18 local children were able to attend 28 weeks of the camp put on by the Medfield Parks & Recreation Department. The money also allowed for nine additional swim pond passes, which gave about 34 people access to the pond.

Peterson said Medfield Youth Outreach leaders had first raised the matter with the foundation in 2017, as that group interacts quite a bit with people in need.

“Kids going to camp is not just about a fun time for the children,” he said. “It also allows parents to go to work.”

However, the idea was first discussed in June, forcing the foundation to move quickly to raise its $5,000 goal.

“We started it at the eleventh hour,” Peterson. “There was sort of a blitz to get information out on social media.”

This year, the drive was greatly bolstered by a $5,000 grant from the Medfield Home Committee.

“The Home Committee was impressed by the Medfield Foundation’s Camp Fund during its initial year last summer,” Committee Chairwoman Kathy Thompson said in a statement. “This year, the Home Committee wanted to support such a great, local goal for Medfield kids.”

Though the Home Committee provided the bulk of the money raised, the foundation was able to garner about $1,000 from other community donations, Peterson said. Those who wish to contribute to the drive may do so at the foundation’s website, www.medfieldfoundation.org, or by mailing checks to the group, care of the Medfield Town House.

The Medfield Foundation itself, Peterson said, grew out of a desire to bolster private philanthropy in town. Under its aegis, there have been efforts to provide a new football field for the high school and build an outdoor classroom for the Dale Street School, among other projects.

Medfield Foundation’s Camp Fund Succeeds

The Medfield Foundation Camp Fund completed a successful year, raising more than its $5,000 target, to send Medfield in need children to summer camp and to provide swim pond passes. The Medfield Foundation Camp Fund is in its second year, and is a direct initiative of the Medfield Foundation board members. The Medfield Foundation thanked the Medfield community for its outpouring of support that sent the kids to summer camp.

The Medfield Foundation Camp Fund was hugely aided this year by a major $5,000 grant from the Home Committee. Longtime Home Committee member and current chairperson, Kathy Thompson stated that “the Home Committee was impressed by the Medfield Foundations Camp Fund during its initial year last summer, sending Medfield children to our local camps, and this year the Home Committee wanted to support such a great, local goal for Medfield kids.”

The Medfield Foundation Camp Fund teamed with the Medfield Park & Recreation Commission and the Medfield Youth Outreach to identify the children in need of assistance and to provide scholarships to the kids. This summer 18 children were helped to attend 28 weeks of summer camp and 9 swim pond passes were provided allowing approximately 34 people to attend the pond. Medfield Youth Outreach Director, Dawn Alcott, said “I hope the Medfield Foundation really recognizes that its help is so far beyond camp or a one time boost. The Camp Fund allowed caregivers to continue at their jobs…and ultimately kept families in their homes or at the very least more financially secure! The recipients are so genuine in their thanks and their relief.”

ATTENTION!  There are only 8 days left to register on-line for the New Life 5k!

Do you LOVE the Angel Run? Then we think you’re going to LOVE New Life Furniture Bank’s “1st Annual New Life 5k Trail Run”.

This fundraising event will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 5th at the scenic Medfield State Hospital grounds. The event is open to the public, and all ages are encouraged to RUN, JOG OR WALK in this family-friendly event.
