MFC’s letter to Medfield

From Susan Maritan, Medfield Food Cupboard Publicist –

Dear Friends of the Medfield Food Cupboard,

We are starting off the New Year with a big THANK YOU to the Medfield community for its overwhelming support during this most unsettling year. The outpouring of generosity this holiday season will be remembered as the one with the biggest impact in our 29-year history.

The entire town – individuals, businesses, faith-based organizations, schools, town departments, and community service groups – pitched in with monetary donations, food, and volunteer hours to ensure we remained open and that our shelves, refrigerator, and freezer were filled. Your efforts  continue to make a difference every day in the lives of over 200 residents who rely on us for emergency and supplemental food.

We served more households and children than ever before, a significant accomplishment given Covid restrictions. Your support provided needed relief to individuals and families facing financial hardships and created a happy holiday for many children, seniors, and parents. Community groups provided presents, stockings, blankets, hand-knitted gloves and hats, pies and breads, Christmas trees, gingerbread house kits, and passes to the Winter Light Show, to those who otherwise may have gone without.

We look forward to working together in 2021 as we continue to operate under the challenges of this pandemic and strive to meet increased demand for our services. Your meaningful gifts of money, food, and time are helping to alleviate food insecurity for our neighbors in need. Gratitude from clients, smiles on children’s faces, dinners on tables, and food in the cupboard for tomorrow’s meals are the best start to a New Year for one and all. Thank you, dear neighbors, for making this possible.

Susan Gorog and Tracey Rogers
Co-Presidents, Medfield Food Cupboard

MMA’s The Beacon

The Massachusetts Municipal Association has made The Beacon, its monthly magazine, a PDF and now distribute it digitally. This month I especially took note of:

  • the discussion of the new police reform legislation
  • that the “Department of Revenue projects a drop in tax collections of about 6%”
  • the housing and transportation bills enacted this week

Hello Members!

Here’s the January 2021 issue of The Beacon – packed with the latest budget and COVID-related news, updates about the MMA Annual Meeting & Trade Show, information about local and state pandemic response efforts, and details about late-session legislative activity and member group webinars.

Link to the January 2021 issue of The Beacon (no login required)

By publishing The Beacon as a PDF, we can ensure that we get you the very latest information that you need ASAP. (If you did not receive this email directly, please share your email address with us – along with name, title and city/town – at database@mma.org.)

Best wishes to all of you during this challenging time.

SBC traffic survey – open to noon on 1/11/21

From Anna Mae O’Shea Brooke –

Wheelock Neighborhood Traffic Questionnaire Open until Monday, Jan. 11 at noon.

The School Building Committee has released a traffic questionnaire intended, but not limited to, the Wheelock School Neighborhood. The data from this questionnaire is anticipated to be used to fine tune existing traffic calculations and adjustments, to understand additional concerns other than traffic increases, and to most importantly focus on developing mitigation strategies that would best serve the neighborhood and the future school development.

CLICK HERE for the Traffic Questionnaire open until Monday, January 11th at noon.

MEA survey results

Medfield Environmental Action is a relatively new group that meets monthly to share and disseminate information about savings energy, climate change and all things green. They recently circulated a survey and below are the results of 504 submissions.

https://meamedfield.org/

https://www.facebook.com/MedfieldEnvironmentAction/

FALL 2020
SURVEY #1 RESULTS
The survey was conducted through Survey Monkey. We publicized the survey in the Hometown
Weekly, The Press, on Patch, via Facebook, and in the Medfield Insider.
DEMOGRAPHICS
• 504 Surveys Completed
o Really great response!
o Diverse respondents
o 75% of the respondents have lived in Medfield more than 10 years.
o 70% of the respondents are women
o 63% of the respondents are 45 or older
SURVEY RESULTS
We asked “Should the Town of Medfield build buildings that have high energy efficiency
performance and prefer builders/developers who would do the same? This would lead the
town to build a highly efficient “net zero” elementary school and encourage builders/developers
to build using “passive house” standards for new construction and high energy efficiency for
renovations, in projects such as State Hospital Development.” (Q5). See graphic at end.
95% responded favorably.
• 41% of respondents chose “Yes, in all circumstances because not adding greenhouse
gases to our environment is critical at this time.”
• 54% of respondents chose “Yes, if the costs are not prohibitive and a reasonable
payback of any additional investment can be achieved over the life of the building.”
We asked “The State of Massachusetts has committed to a goal of Net Zero Emissions by 2050,
which will help Massachusetts address the climate crisis by reducing carbon emissions. This will
require changes in our local community. Which of the following best describes your position
towards Medfield adopting its own goals and committing to develop a plan by November 2021
to proactively meet the state’s 2050 goal? (Q4)
• 72% - “I support Medfield adopting climate goals and developing a plan (just as Acton,
Arlington, Ashland, Cambridge, Lexington and many other MA towns have already
done.)
• 17% - “I am supportive of working to address the climate crisis, but I need more
information about why it is important for Medfield to adopt a goal and a plan now.
We asked for agreement with the following statements. (Q3)
a) The climate crisis poses a serious threat for people around the world.
• 79% completely agree
• 14% somewhat agree
b) The climate crisis is something that will affect my family in Medfield.
• 52% completely agree
• 32% somewhat agree
c) I am ready to take steps at home to tackle the climate crisis.
• 60% completely agree
• 28% somewhat agree
d) I will support and encourage my local government in making policies that address the
climate crisis.
• 71% completely agree
• 19% somewhat agree
We asked “Climate crisis is a term describing global warming and climate change, and their
consequences. Globally, 19 of the 20 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001
(Sources: NASA.gov and IPCC). Increased flooding, wildfires, and severe storms are just
some of the direct results of a warming Earth. Do you believe we are facing a Climate Crisis?
(Q2)
• 43% - Yes, due to human activities
• 51% - Yes, due to both human activities AND natural cycles and causes
This question has only 403 respondents because it was added mid-survey.

I would love to share that I am a single mom of four
children... I’ve been out of work for three weeks, still
waiting on my unemployment, and it is so nice to
know that this program is there and helping so
many. I can’t say enough good about this amazing
program. God bless and thank you so very much.
When you are told that there are people that care
about their community to donate something they
have that others don’t, it means so much. It really
took a lot of pressure off me so I thank you with
all my heart. . .my guardian angel.
The Medeld Foundation Legacy Fund is an endowment created to support community driven
projects to ensure a strong and vibrant Medeld, now and in the future.
Friends of the Medeld Rail Trail
First ever MFi Legacy Fund grant recipients
The Friends of the Medeld Rail Trail was a recipient of a $5,000 grant, which they
felt was key to showing community support as they applied for state funding. Since
that time, the Rail Trail has received a total of $200,000 in additional grants from the
Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation for the creation of the
Medeld Rail Trail. Recently the Medeld Select Board signed a lease with the MBTA
for the rail righ-of-way and construction on the project should begin in the spring
of 2021. Visit them at medeld.baycolonyrailtrail.org
Medeld Cares About Prevention (MCAP) was a recipient of a $5,000 grant
to enlist the services of Bright Solutions Consulting to help them apply for a
federal “Drug-Free Communities” grant. The grant request was successful and
Medeld was awarded $625,000 to be used over a ve-year period to implement
comprehensive strategies to reduce youth substance use in Medeld.
Visit them at MedeldCares.org
The Cultural Alliance of Medeld (CAM) was a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the
MFi Legacy Fund. Under the guidance of Jean Mineo, The Cultural Alliance is working
to develop an Arts Center at the Medeld State Hospital. The Medeld Select Board
and the State of Massachusetts have approved a long-term lease with the Cultural
Alliance which is now in the process of raising additional funds for the renovation and
operations of the Arts Center from private resources.
The MCAP coalition owes the success of the $625,000 DFC grant application to the
Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund grant, which allowed MCAP to hire an experienced
grant writer,” said Chelsea Goldstein-Walsh LICSW, of Medfield Outreach. “We are
looking forward to launching a proactive and comprehensive effort to decrease youth
substance use and promote wellness in the community.
I don’t know what to say. You saved 3 people.
Testimonials from some of the people helped through your donations
