New Life Virtual 5k

New Life Virtual 5k

New Life Still Running with a Virtual 5k

By Tod Dimmick

The pandemic has affected every community event this spring, including the annual New Life 5k Trail Run, an event that raises more than 20% of the New Life Furniture Bank’s budget. This Massachusetts charity serves nearly 700 hundred households every year, including individuals, families, single mothers, seniors and veterans, as they come out of homelessness. New Life collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need.

Faced with the challenge of having to cancel its annual 5k Trail Run, New Life sought creative and safe ways to hold their event, which raises funds that are critical to New Life’s ability to serve its clients. “The economic impact of COVID-19 is hitting our clients hard,” said Rich Purnell, Executive Director of New Life. He added that, “in the coming months, we anticipate a surge in requests as many families will be displaced from their homes.”

After careful thought, the trail run organizing committee announced a new “virtual 5k.”  Runners and walkers register the same way they would for a conventional run, at www.newlifefb.org/virtual5k, where they can also create or join a team. Participants create their own 5k route, or use fitness apps like MapMyRun and Strava. Teams or individuals may even choose to row 5k on erg machines, or to bike. Entrants complete their personal 5k anytime between April 13 and May 10, and runners and walkers log their times on Racewire. On May 11, results will be posted and awards will be given in traditional categories, as well as in new, creative categories like most creative course.

Ron Yates, co-founder of the New Life Furniture Bank, said “we recognize that this is a totally new way to do something like this, and that is part of the fun. The Virtual 5k could bring even more people to the event because it is so easy to participate from anywhere, at any time. A team could be made up of family members, high school or college cross country teams looking for fitness and competition, an office group, you name it!”

The organizers also believe that the event offers an important opportunity for supporters who, especially in these challenging times, seek ways to do something positive and proactive while still being safe. “Folks joining the Virtual 5k not only support the New Life mission, they also are a welcome part of a community doing something that matters,” said Yates. “That’s especially important right now. And, running in the virtual 5k is a healthy thing to do. Everyone wins.”

Carmen Luisi of Holliston was the top female runner in the 2019 Trail Run (at age 13!), and she’s looking forward to the Virtual 5k this time around. “This is a very important cause, even greater now because people are struggling financially with the current pandemic,” she said.

Dan Haley, of Wayland, said he will run the Virtual 5k this year with his family. “My wife and 12 year old daughter and I had a wonderful time at last year’s 5K,” he said. “With everything in the near term shutting down, we were excited to hear that the New Life event is going virtual. One of our goals as a family as we navigate this strange, temporary reality is to continuously reach out to help others. Another is to keep getting exercise! So this checks both boxes, and gives us something worthwhile and active to do as a family.”

Mark Silva is a partner at the law firm Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP, a sponsor of the event. He plans to run the race for the first time this year. “At a time when we’re all cooped up in our homes looking for something to do, looking for a way to help,” he said, “the 5K is giving us the opportunity to support an incredible organization… while being completely flexible on approach.” He added, “We plan on doing the 5K as a family this year – my wife will run and I am planning to bike the 5K with the kids.”

Kristin Chisum of Wayland will also run the Virtual 5k again with her son Luke. “We are thrilled that the race committee has come up with a way for the race to go on,” she said. “We live near the woods near Walden Pond so that’s where we’ll be.” She added: “I know that we will finish our 5K again this year with a feeling of gratitude – thankful for this group of people that have found a way to change people’s lives and have provided this 5K as a way for us to do our own little part.”

Participants in the New Life Virtual 5k will be encouraged to post photos of their participation with the hashtag #NewLifeStillRunning or send an email to trailrun@newlifefb.org. The registration page reads, in part, “It is our hope that sharing everyone’s fun photos and stories will bring joy to our New Life community and inspire other people far and wide to join the cause.” The organizers made it clear that they want more ideas from supporters about how to make the event fun and accessible to all. Ideas are coming in already, including filming clips of virtual bystanders cheering on the runners, and asking kids to create colorful yard signs.

The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area.

Angel Run

Dear Angel Run Nation,

You did it again! You came out in good cheer and with bells on to make the 2019 Medfield Foundation Angel Run a great success!  Because of your participation, those in our community who need some extra assistance will have their needs met. The generosity of time, talent and enthusiasm from all is the reason we put this event on year after year. Together we are building a stronger Medfield and truly helping our fellow community members.

We Need Your Help!

As you probably know, the Angel Run is organized by volunteers from the community and we cannot do it without people being generous with their time and skills. As we like to say, “the Angel Run doesn’t run itself!”

After six years as a co-chair of the Angel Run and the person behind the amazing decorations and entertainment on the race course, our Race Course Coordinator has now retired. We are looking for a new Race Course Coordinator to pick up and run the effort. This is a critical leadership role for the Angel Run for someone with great project management and organizational skills.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

  • Corporate Sponsorships team
  • Decorations team
  • Post-Event Party team
  • Publicity team
  • Race Course Coordinator
  • Registration & Reporting team
  • Shirts & Bibs team

We have an experienced group of leaders and a great team that work closely together and will help any new volunteers with any questions. And don’t worry, we only meet in person to kick-off the planning and to do a wrap-up so you won’t be bogged down by lots of meetings.

We’d love to have your involvement. Please email us at angelrun@medfieldfoundation.org and let us know if you would like to help or if you have any questions.

Local Teams Enter The New Life 5k Trail Run

Many teams with deep local roots will participate in the New Life 5k Trail Run on May 11. This community-building event offers a morning of both competition and fun at the scenic Medfield State Hospital Grounds while supporting a great cause. Get In Shape for Women, and Greater Neponset Running Club (GNRC) are just two of the participating teams.

For Alexandra Chace of Get In Shape For Women of Westwood (Members are from Westwood, Dover, Norwood, Medfield and Dedham), the New Life 5k Trail Run is perfect for them. “New Life gives people a fresh start, new chance and they make a difference in people’s lives,” she said. “And I think that we have similar values in changing lives and empowering people.” Chace noted that her group supports many other New Life efforts. “New Life is an amazing organization,” she added. Describing last year’s team, she observed that “for more than half of them it was their first 5k. They had such a great sense of accomplishment when they finished that course.”

For Jeff Weidenaar, president of GNRC (with members from Norwood, Walpole, Canton, Sharon, Medfield, Westwood, and Dover), the event is “a 5K with something different about it. The trails made for a new twist that appealed to a lot of people. GNRC participated because we were looking for a fun local race.” He added that the event is “a worthy cause that everyone in the club was proud to support.”

Other teams participating this year include UCC Medfield Trail Blazers, BHHC, Manning Maniacs, Eliot Church XC, Soles of Medfield, Team Grandpa Elwell, Team Kramer, Walk-Ins Welcome, Blue Hills Hiking Club, and Team Infinitri. New teams are welcome. The New Life 5K Trail Run is open to avid runners, walkers and everyone in between. Registration is open at www.newlifefb.org/5ktrailrun, with discounts for teams of four or more.  The first 400 registrations will receive a t-shirt on race day thanks to New Balance, an event sponsor.

The New Life 5K Trail Run benefits New Life Furniture Bank of MA and its mission to provide essential home furnishings to those in need.

What will the challenge be this year? Chace of Get In Shape For Women admits that “I have to figure out a way to top last year’s shirts.” (see photo)

New Life 5K Trail Run to take place May 11

The second annual New Life 5K Trail Run will take place on May 11, 2019.  The event benefits New Life Furniture Bank of MA and its mission to provide essential home furnishings to those in need.

This community-building event offers a morning of both competition and fun at the scenic Medfield State Hospital Grounds while supporting a great cause. The New Life 5K Trail Run is open to avid runners, walkers and everyone in between.  The inaugural event in 2018 brought out over 400 enthusiastic supporters of the New Life Furniture Bank mission.

Registration is open at www.newlifefb.org/5ktrailrun, with discounts for registration before April 5th, and for teams of four or more.  The first 400 registrations will receive a t-shirt on race day thanks to New Balance, an event sponsor.

“The New Life 5K Trail Run is a meaningful, fun way for the community to support our mission,” said Ron Yates, a co-founder of the New Life Furniture Bank. “As a direct result of funds raised from runners and sponsors, those coming out of homelessness are able to furnish their new homes with your gently used items,” he added.

“Financial contributions and donations of home furnishings continue to be our sole means for assisting our clients in need. We are proud to have been able to serve 1,700 households in just a little over five years,” said Doug Marshall, also a co-founder.

New Life Furniture Bank of MA collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need. The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area. New Life provides a meaningful option for local residents who are downsizing, renovating or disposing of a loved one’s property.

Those interested in running are encouraged to visit www.newlifefb.org/5ktrailrun.  Those interested in being a sponsor, volunteering, donating home furnishings, or making a financial contribution are encouraged to visit www.newlifefb.org

BoS 2/19 & Peak House’s sign

I posted the agenda for the Tuesday meeting already.  I will insert the agendas again at the end of this post.

The agenda and informational materials for the Tuesday meeting of the select board are available here – 20190219-agenda and materials

Peak House sign

Peak House sign

My favorite part of the materials is the letter to Senator Feeney, from the MassDOT Administrator, about the request from the Peak House Heritage Center to correct the factual errors in the MassDOT sign at the Peak House.

First, it is instructive as to what matters most in state government, since MassDOT gotthe letter about the issue from the Peak House Heritage Center, with letters of support from both the Board of Selectmen and Senator Feeney.  MassDOT opted to address its response to the writer who had the least to do with the matter and the Town of Medfield, our State Senator, rather than to the person who addressed the issue to them.

Second, I was fascinated to learn where and why the sign originated, as it is certainly substantially nicer than most state signs.

Third, I was amused by the language MassDOT used to deny the request:  “MassDOT would be reluctant to deface the marker because of minor factual
errors that have come to light after such a long period of time.”

MassDOT’s letter does propose a “compromise” solution, a new MassDOT sign to be added that notes the error in the original sign:

Please be aware that the Peak House marker is one of 275 cast iron roadside historical markers that were erected throughout the Commonwealth in 1930 by the Massachusetts Department of Public Works, MassDOT’s predecessor agency, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary Commission designed the markers, chose the historical subjects, and prepared the text under the guidance of Samuel Eliot Morison, eminent author and Professor of History at Harvard University. Approximately 170 of these markers still exist.

Mr. Robert Gregg of the Peak House Heritage Center has notified MassDOT that the text on the Peak House marker contains three factual errors. Mr. Gregg has suggested to Mary Rafferty of the MassDOT Environmental Services staff that MassDOT should remove the errors by grinding off certain raised cast iron letters and numbers from the marker and then applying new letters and numbers to provide the correct information. The Medfield Board of Selectmen has endorsed Mr. Gregg’s proposal in a letter to MassDOT dated January 15, 2019.

MassDOT considers the Tercentenary Markers to have historical significance in their own right, above and beyond the text conveyed on each marker. The original markers are nearly 90 years old and they interpret history as it was understood at the time of the Tercentenary commemoration. MassDOT would be reluctant to deface the marker because of minor factual errors that. have come to light after such a long period of time.
