“Changing Lives campaign at NLHF

“Shopping” at New Life Brings Clients Dignity and Delight

Medfield, Mass – November 14, 2019: What makes the place where you eat, sleep and live feel truly like a home? Some might say it’s the treasured items collected over a lifetime; others might say it’s attractive art, accent pillows or current paint colors that makes a dwelling a home. Rich Purnell, the Executive Director at New Life Furniture Bank of MA, would tell you that he and the others who work and volunteer at New Life have a different and more powerful answer to that question. They are witnesses to the importance and emotional impact of the furniture basics that many of us take for granted.

“When clients “shop” at New Life I see them breathe a sigh of relief,” shared Purnell. “At last their empty apartment will feel like a home. And what do they take delight in? It’s a few simple things. As one of our clients wrote, ‘I have been sleeping on the floor…. New Life is giving me the opportunity to offer my children a place to sleep, eat and sit without worrying about getting into more debt.’ ”

Because of the high demand for affordable housing in the Boston area, many of New Life’s clients have spent months or even years in homeless shelters. Once they get housing, the wait for furnishings can be as long as seven weeks, due to the high demand for New Life’s services. During that time they may be actually living – eating, sleeping, relaxing – on the floor. Kitchen tables, beds and couches bring clients dignity, and in turn, make an empty apartment a home. This is the concept behind New Life’s end-of-year fundraising campaign entitled Changing Lives.

The Changing Lives campaign has an ambitious goal of raising $115,000 by December 31. These funds will support New Life’s growth, specifically, serving more households – and to that end, renting more warehouse space, hiring additional staff and purchasing beds to supplement those that are donated.

New Life has grown tremendously in its first six years of operation. The organization is seen as an important contributor in the battle against homelessness in Massachusetts, and the campaign is critical to New Life’s continued growth. Since its inception, New Life has served over 2,400 households, and has gained a reputation across eastern Massachusetts as a reliable resource that provides those in need with quality, gently-used home.

Gifts may be made on the website, newlifefb.org/changinglives, or by check payable to New Life Furniture Bank of MA, sent to P.O. Box 573, Medfield, MA 02052.

New Life 5k Trail Run 2019

From Tod Dimmick –

new life run 2019-3

Dear Medfield Community,

The members of the New Life 5k Trail Run Committee would like to thank our community for their continuing support of the New Life 5k Trail Run, now in its 2nd year.

Saturday, May 11th, featured perfect weather, an enthusiastic turnout, and impressive fund-raising. The Trail Run took a winding route through and between the historic Medfield State Hospital buildings, across verdant fields, through the woods, down along the scenic Charles River and back up to the hospital grounds. The event raised funds and awareness for New Life Furniture Bank of MA. RaceWire (an online race registration and race timing company) provided participants with official times and finish-line photos. We give special thanks to our lead sponsors: Eastern Bank, New Balance, and Hometown Weekly; our Chip Timing Sponsors: Choate, Frank Webb Home, Rich & Susan Holbrook, and the Louis & Mary Kay Smith Family Foundation; as well as many other generous sponsors and in-kind donors. We greatly appreciate their support.  Hard-working volunteers helped make the entire event run smoothly. Close to 300 runners and walkers participated, including individuals and teams. Music and outdoor games entertained all. We are very grateful to the Town of Medfield for the use of such an idyllic setting.

Carmen Luisi was the overall winner for the females and Andy Gardiner was the winner for the males. Visit newlifefb.org/5kphotos to view images of the race which capture the spirit of this fun event and its unique setting.

Executive Director Rich Purnell noted that these are exciting times at New Life. “We are growing quickly, and becoming an essential part of helping families transition out of homelessness or other forms of displacement,” he said. “The Trail Run was a great success. We raised funds to help us continue our mission and shared our organization with a wonderful group of people. We are so grateful to our sponsors and to those who participated.”

At New Life Furniture Bank of MA, we are proud to have served almost 1,900 households since our founding five years ago. Over this time period, we have provided not just 23,000 pieces of furniture, but helped to create a stable home for our clients and kept these items out of landfills. All of this has been made possible by the 800 volunteers who contributed 24,000 hours of their time and energy. Our Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area. New Life provides a meaningful option for local residents who are downsizing, renovating or disposing of a loved one’s property. Learn more about supporting, donating to, or volunteering for New Life Furniture Bank at newlifefb.org.

Thank you for being part of the New Life 5k Trail Run, an event we hope will become a growing community tradition. Stay tuned for updates next fall on the Third Annual 5k!

Sincerely,

The New Life Trail Run Committee

MFi Legacy Fund’s School Bus & Motorcycle at New ‘N Towne’s Touch-a-Truck Saturday

The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund sponsored the school bus at the New ‘N Towne Touch-a-Truck event last Saturday morning at the Blake Middle School parking lot, and for good measure brought along the official Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund motorcycle (thank you MFi President, Evan Weisenfeld!).

Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund stickers were placed on every child, and most of the DPW workers.

The wheels on the bus may “go round and round,” but the door to the bus did not fully open on its own, so the bus had its own door man.

The Legacy Fund is an initial $1 m. endowed fund that the Medfield Foundation is raising to assure that in the future the town will be able to do more of the special things that make Medfield the great community that it has been for all of us and our families. Creating a Medfield Foundation endowment now will provide financial resiliency for the town’s future.  To help, see more about the Legacy Fund at http://medfieldfoundation.org/legacy-fund/.

Local Teams Enter The New Life 5k Trail Run

Many teams with deep local roots will participate in the New Life 5k Trail Run on May 11. This community-building event offers a morning of both competition and fun at the scenic Medfield State Hospital Grounds while supporting a great cause. Get In Shape for Women, and Greater Neponset Running Club (GNRC) are just two of the participating teams.

For Alexandra Chace of Get In Shape For Women of Westwood (Members are from Westwood, Dover, Norwood, Medfield and Dedham), the New Life 5k Trail Run is perfect for them. “New Life gives people a fresh start, new chance and they make a difference in people’s lives,” she said. “And I think that we have similar values in changing lives and empowering people.” Chace noted that her group supports many other New Life efforts. “New Life is an amazing organization,” she added. Describing last year’s team, she observed that “for more than half of them it was their first 5k. They had such a great sense of accomplishment when they finished that course.”

For Jeff Weidenaar, president of GNRC (with members from Norwood, Walpole, Canton, Sharon, Medfield, Westwood, and Dover), the event is “a 5K with something different about it. The trails made for a new twist that appealed to a lot of people. GNRC participated because we were looking for a fun local race.” He added that the event is “a worthy cause that everyone in the club was proud to support.”

Other teams participating this year include UCC Medfield Trail Blazers, BHHC, Manning Maniacs, Eliot Church XC, Soles of Medfield, Team Grandpa Elwell, Team Kramer, Walk-Ins Welcome, Blue Hills Hiking Club, and Team Infinitri. New teams are welcome. The New Life 5K Trail Run is open to avid runners, walkers and everyone in between. Registration is open at www.newlifefb.org/5ktrailrun, with discounts for teams of four or more.  The first 400 registrations will receive a t-shirt on race day thanks to New Balance, an event sponsor.

The New Life 5K Trail Run benefits New Life Furniture Bank of MA and its mission to provide essential home furnishings to those in need.

What will the challenge be this year? Chace of Get In Shape For Women admits that “I have to figure out a way to top last year’s shirts.” (see photo)

New Life 5K Trail Run to take place May 11

The second annual New Life 5K Trail Run will take place on May 11, 2019.  The event benefits New Life Furniture Bank of MA and its mission to provide essential home furnishings to those in need.

This community-building event offers a morning of both competition and fun at the scenic Medfield State Hospital Grounds while supporting a great cause. The New Life 5K Trail Run is open to avid runners, walkers and everyone in between.  The inaugural event in 2018 brought out over 400 enthusiastic supporters of the New Life Furniture Bank mission.

Registration is open at www.newlifefb.org/5ktrailrun, with discounts for registration before April 5th, and for teams of four or more.  The first 400 registrations will receive a t-shirt on race day thanks to New Balance, an event sponsor.

“The New Life 5K Trail Run is a meaningful, fun way for the community to support our mission,” said Ron Yates, a co-founder of the New Life Furniture Bank. “As a direct result of funds raised from runners and sponsors, those coming out of homelessness are able to furnish their new homes with your gently used items,” he added.

“Financial contributions and donations of home furnishings continue to be our sole means for assisting our clients in need. We are proud to have been able to serve 1,700 households in just a little over five years,” said Doug Marshall, also a co-founder.

New Life Furniture Bank of MA collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need. The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Donation Center in Walpole, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area. New Life provides a meaningful option for local residents who are downsizing, renovating or disposing of a loved one’s property.
