Medfield Foundation supports new town initiative
Hinkley Helpers aims to improve playground at Hinkley Park, hosting launch event on May 15
Hinkley Helpers, an initiative of The Medfield Foundation, Inc. has announced it has launched. The group is raising funds to contribute to a rebuild of the Hinkley Playground in coordination with Medfield Parks and Rec.
Hinkley Helpers was formed by a group of parents and residents to fundraise to create a best-in-class, new, safe and creative playground at the current Hinkley Park site.
According to Kelly Fallon, Hinkley Helper’s Founding Chair,” We believe all children deserve a safe, clean and inclusive place to play.”
“The mission of Hinkley Helpers is vital to support the thriving town of Medfield and this initiative plans to raise private funds for public good and an improved playground at Hinkley Park”, said Kirsten Poler, president of Medfield Foundation.
Hinkley Helpers invites the public to attend the Hinkley Playground Rebuild Launch Event on Sunday May 15 from 11 AM – 2:30 PM at Hinkley Park, 51 Green Street Medfield featuring events for kids, face paint, and local food vendors Chubbs’ Ice Cream, Medfield House of Pizza, and The Hot Dog Wagon.

The 5th New Life 5k Trail Run hits the trails on May 7th
New Life is excited to host its 5th annual Trail Run on Saturday, May 7th on the Medfield State Hospital grounds (at Hospital Rd. & Service Dr., Medfield, MA). The route winds through the beautiful Charles River Reservation, and the event is open to runners, walkers and everyone in between.
To celebrate being back in person after two years of virtual runs, New Life has partnered with the Cultural Alliance of Medfield to provide live music on race day. Also, the Furniture Matters club of Medfield High School will introduce a Kids Fun Run for children 4-10 years old.
Trail Run registration is open at www.newlifefb.org/5ktrailrun. An “early bird” discount registration of $25 is available until April 23; after that registration will be $30 between April 24 to May 5; and $35 on race day. On-site Kids Fun Run registration will be $5 (cash or check). There is a $5 group discount for teams of four or more when the registrations are made at the same time. On-site registration opens at 7:30 on race day. The Kids Fun Run starts at 9:00, and the Trail Run starts at 9:30, with live music to follow. The first 300 people to register will receive a t-shirt on race day.
The Trail Run benefits New Life Furniture Bank of MA and its mission to provide essential home furnishings to those in need. “The funds we raise go directly to helping those coming out of homelessness to furnish their new homes,” said Rich Purnell, Executive Director of the New Life Furniture Bank.
New Life Furniture Bank of MA collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are made available at no cost to individuals and families in need. The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Walpole Donation Center, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area. New Life provides a meaningful option for folks who are downsizing, renovating or disposing of a loved one’s property.

Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund received a $100,000 matching gift challenge
The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund has received a $100,000 challenge gift from an anonymous donor, that matches gifts made to the Legacy Fund before the end of the year up to $100,000. Your gift will not only be doubled, but can be put to work in your community through the grant making in 2022.
The 2021 Legacy Fund round of grants were just recently announced. The Legacy Fund received ten proposals requesting a total of $62,000 in grant money, and after careful consideration, the MFi Legacy Fund awarded $28,200 in grants to 4 groups:
Medfield Outreach
Peak House Heritage Center
Sustainable Medfield
Friends of the MHS Theatre Society
The MFi Legacy Fund looks forward to seeing the results of the great work these groups will do for our community. The MFi also looks forward to building a larger endowment to allow its grants program to fulfil more of the needs presented to the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund.

MFi Legacy Fund Announces Local Grants
Medfield Foundation’s Legacy Fund announces grants to local non-profit organizations and a new $100,000 matching gift challenge opportunity through December 31, 2021
The Medfield Foundation’s Legacy Fund, an endowment fund created by the Medfield Foundation (MFi), has awarded grants to four local non-profit organizations, enabling them to fund important initiatives to benefit the Medfield community.
The new grants were awarded after the foundation received eleven proposals submitted requesting a total of $62,000. Six groups were invited to participate in a live “Pitch It!” event, and ultimately four were awarded a total of $28,200 in grants. MEDFIELD FOUNDATION LEGACY FUND NOW ACCEPTING GRANT APPLICATIONS
The Community Board that operates the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund announced today that applications are now open for their second round of grants. Any Medfield-based nonprofit is eligible and welcome to submit a grant request online at www.medfieldfoundation.org/legacy-fund by October 15, 2021.
The Community Board will review all submissions and select the finalists who will be invited to a Shark Tank-type event (PITCH IT!) in October where they can present their projects, goals, and financial needs. The final selection of grant recipients will be made by the Community Board in early November.
The initial round of Legacy Fund grants was made two years ago, with monies awarded to the Cultural Alliance of Medfield (CAM) ($10,000), the Friends of the Medfield Rail Trail ($5,000), and Medfield Cares About Prevention (MCAP) ($5,000). CAM is using its grant to create the Cultural Arts Center at the former Medfield State Hospital; the Medfield Rail Trail has started construction of its new multipurpose trail; and MCAP hired a grant writer who succeeded in garnering a five-year, $625,000 Federal SAMSA drug prevention grant.
This year’s grant candidates should be prepared to illustrate a strong and compelling current need for funds, and possibly present how those funds may be leveraged in some material way, as illustrated above.
Time is running out to submit an application, so local non-profits are encouraged to act fast to take advantage of this spectacular opportunity.

UCC Medfield enters the New Life 5k
UCC Medfield has entered a team in the New Life 5k Trail Run since the event began. Rich Frank, an organizer of the team, says that the church is a passionate supporter of the mission of New Life Furniture Bank of MA. “Our team (and church) members love New Life Furniture Bank,” he said. “The largest portion of our annual giving budget is directed towards housing/homelessness, and we have several ministries that serve those experiencing homelessness. New Life serves a critical need… and we’ve witnessed just how impactful that experience can be.”
New Life Furniture Bank of MA collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are made available at no cost to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness. In the midst of the pandemic in 2020, New Life found a way to safely serve almost 500 families. The Medfield-based not-for-profit organization operates a Walpole Donation Center, and serves the MetroWest and Greater Boston area.
To Frank, the big picture is important. He says, “New Life helps restore dignity to and removes a tremendous burden from their clients.”
The 5k organizers have learned that the in person component will not be possible this year. As a result, the 2021 New Life 5k will be entirely virtual, and entrants can run or walk their own 5k between now and May 8th (Just like last year!).
New Life 5k registration and information is available at www.newlifefb.org/5k. There are discounts for teams of four or more, and new teams are welcome. The registration fee is $30.
