MCPE partners with Green & Clear Cleaners

This from Susan Maritan for the MCPE –

MCPE and Green & Clear Cleaners Partner Up to Help Medfield Schools

Medfield Coalition for Public Education is pleased to announce a partnership with Green & Clear Cleaners to raise money for the Medfield Public Schools. It’s very easy for the public to get involved. Here’s how the program works: mention MCPE and get 10% off your personal cleaning order for that visit. For every subsequent visit, Green & Clear Cleaners will donate 10% of the total order to MCPE! Please note, business shirts, specialty items and alterations are not included in the 10% donation.

This is a great opportunity for people to be eco-friendly AND help the Medfield public schools at the same time.

Green & Clear Cleaners is located at 258 Main Street in Medfield in the Donut Express Plaza.

Catch some Jazz ‘Round Town tomorrow

This from the Chris McCue of the Medfield Music Association  –

Catch some Jazz ‘Round Town tomorrow

The Medfield High School Jazz Band is one of just 15 bands chosen from across North America to compete in the Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center next month. If you missed the recent Jazz Night, you can catch smaller performances by members of the jazz band as they play around town tomorrow, April 12, to raise money for their trip. Just listen for the music, and look for the Duke Ellington-style top hats being used to collect donations as part of the “Dollars for Duke” campaign.

Our local businesses have been tremendously supportive of the MHS Jazz Band in many ways, and four will be hosting small jazz ensemble at their sites. Here is the schedule:

Blue Moon and Needham Bank – 9:30 to 11 a.m.;

Lovell’s – 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and

Starbucks – 2 to 3:30 p.m.

At Blue Moon, “guest artist” Tim Borchers will be joining the ensemble after winning the slot at a Jazz Night drawing!

In addition, Needham Bank is allowing community members to make donations to the trip via its coin machine all week long. If you have spare change you’d like to get rid of, this is a great use for it!  The bank will also donate $100 to the Jazz Band for anyone who opens up a checking account on Saturday.

At Lovell’s, the MMA is hosting a bake sale, and 10% of Accents purchases the entire weekend will go toward the Jazz Band trip.

Free furniture for the needy

This new effort sounds like a wonderful addition –

New Life Home Refurnishing, a new nonprofit furniture bank serving this area, is in desperate need of mattresses and box springs of any size in good condition (no stains, visible marks or tears), as well as bedding of any size. We have several people in a queue waiting to “shop” for furniture until we add some mattresses to our inventory. Most of our limited selection of mattresses went to several clients before Christmas.

New Life Home Refurnishing is a brand new non-profit organization that accepts tax-deductible donations* of “gently used” furniture and household items, warehouses them and then makes them available at no charge to those in need. We are located just over the Medfield line at 102 Elm Street (Route 27) in the brick mill building after the railroad bridge.

New Life helps individuals and families in transition: victims of fires or floods, those escaping domestic abuse, people coming out of homelessness, veterans of war and recent refugees. In order to qualify, clients need to provide a letter of referral from a social service agency or clergy member. Donors also benefit through this local opportunity to recycle furniture and household items they no longer need.

New Life Home Refurnishing moved to its new warehouse space on January 18. (We outgrew our donated space in Medfield after only three months!) Now we are anxious to build up our inventory of furniture in order to serve the growing list of clients in our queue. Although we will be grateful for any donations of furniture and household items in good condition, we especially need the things listed at the bottom of this page. See www.newlifehr.org if you have questions about what we accept. The warehouse will be open to receive donations from 9-11 AM on Saturdays. We will also pick up large items during that time frame. Please contact us at info@newlifehr.org or 774-316-6395.

Volunteers are needed for all facets of our operation, from 2.5 hours on a Saturday morning to a variety of behind the scenes tasks. Let us know of your interest by email or phone.

I learned about this great organization and website, TisBest.org,  at the Medfield Foundation meeting last night.  Only thing that could make it better is if it had a hyperlocal Medfield list of charities.

New home for Medfield nonprofit news

Announcement from Chris McCue –

Blog: GoodWorksMedfield  (http://goodworksmedfield.blogspot.com)
1st Post: A home for Medfield nonprofit news

Link: http://goodworksmedfield.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-home-for-medfield-nonprofit-news.html

So here’s what it’s about:  a blog specifically for helping our Medfield non-profit and grassroots groups get the word out about all of their “Good Works”. Our community newspapers & Patch do a super job, but I thought having one online location for just local, non-profit news & events would be very helpful and supplement efforts by our well-established media outlets.

I’d love it if you could help me spread the word around town about the blog – especially among our various community groups. In the next day or two, I’ll be compiling an e-mail list of my own local contacts, but given your positions in town, and/or relationships to many of our beloved Medfield nonprofits, I thought I’d start with you first.

All feedback & suggestions on the blog are welcome too!  I do plan on setting up a Gmail account specifically for the blog so that people can send me info. That’s next on my list.

Thanks,

Chris

Lord’€™s t-shirt benefits Bill Kelly scholarship

This from Cris McCue Potts –

Lord’€™s t-shirt benefits Bill Kelly scholarship

In response to customer requests for a Lord’€™s souvenir after it was announced the store would be closing at the end of February, Nancy Kelly-Lavin is now taking pre-orders for a first-ever Lord’€™s t-shirt with 100 percent of the profits going to a scholarship fund in the name of her father and long-time Lord’s owner Bill Kelly, “€œwho is still the heart and soul” of Lord’€™s after passing away last spring, said his daughter.

“€œIt seemed the moment the word got out about the store closing, I’€™ve had a flood of requests from people coming into the store looking for souvenirs,”€ said Kelly-Lavin.   “€œI hope by creating and selling t-shirts, and directing the profits toward a scholarship fund to benefit the Medfield community and pay tribute to my dad, we can bring a little bit of comfort to people who are sad to see the Lord’s legacy coming to an end.”

It will take about a week for the shirts to arrive, so Lord’€™s is taking pre-orders (and flat donations to the Bill Kelly scholarship fund) at the front counter. Youth shirts are $10 each for medium to extra large; adult medium to XL shirts are $15 each; and XXL shirts are $18. Shirts will be short sleeved, grey, with the trademark red Lord’€™s logo prominently displayed.

One of the store’€™s sales staff noted that the Lord’€™s owners have never been a fan of self-promotion, so other than a postcard featuring the store’€™s neon sign, it has shied away from selling merchandise that touts the store’€™s name. The Lord’€™s t-shirt will mark the first time in its 73-year history that the store will sell an apparel item featuring its own name.

Lord’€™s Department Store will close Feb. 28.

Nominations are open for Natasha Domeshek Kindness Scholarship

Notice today from Annie & David Domeshek –

We are writing to let you know that the nomination period for the Natasha Domeshek Kindness Scholarship opened today, and will run through Feb. 29. There is a link to the nomination form on the home page at www.angelrun.org; we are directing everybody to that location to submit their nominations.

We met with the senior class at Medfield High School yesterday to inform them about the scholarship and the nomination process. In addition, articles about the scholarship will be published this week in Medfield’s local newspapers (in print and online), in local church bulletins, and through Medfield’s various school-based communication channels (to students, staff and parents).

We are excited to have this process underway, and curious to see the response.
