The annual town meeting (ATM) was re-scheduled by the Select Board this afternoon to June 15, not “TBD,” as I stated earlier, however, recognizing that the situation is fluid and it may be required to be changed again.

Emergency SB meeting today

The Select Board held an emergency meeting this afternoon at 1:00 PM via an on-line remote meeting service provided by Zoom.com.

The purpose of the meeting was to consider whether to postpone the town election that was scheduled for this coming Monday, March 30, given the virus issues.  After consideration that the town has only a small number of absentee ballots available (planning was done for a typical town election with no contested seats), and that we wanted to be sure that all that wanted to vote absentee could do so, the decision was made to postpone the election to May 4, a date when residents were already aware that another town event was scheduled to take place – the annual town meeting (ATM) was scheduled to take place that evening.  However, today, the ATM was also postponed to June 15.

The SB also voted to make the primary place for posting notices of any future meetings of town bodies to be the town web site, with the bulletin board on the back of the Town House as the physical back up site.  The bulletin board had been the primary site. Where the employees may be posting the notices remotely, look to the web site as the first place for that future meeting information.

Today’s SB meeting was open to the public, and about half a dozen residents attended, with Martha Festa getting the prize for the best backdrop – a beach scene complete with breaking waves and palm trees blowing in a breeze.

The public was able to ask questions, and did.  A recording of the meeting will be posted on You Tube.

Select Board members next meet Monday, March 30 by attending the virtual Warrant Committee meeting, and the next regularly scheduled SB meeting is the next evening on Tuesday, March 31 (also a virtual meeting).  Both are at 7 PM.

Re: Town of Medfield’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update #3

The Town of Medfield today announced that the Medfield Town House (508-906-3012) will be closed to the public, effective Monday, March 16, 2020. In addition to the Town House, the following Town facilities have been closed to the public:

● Medfield Public Schools – closed Friday, March 13 (508-359-2302)
● The CENTER at Medfield – closed Thursday, March 12 (508-359-3665)
● The Medfield Public Library – closed Friday March, 13 (508-359-4544)
● The Pfaff Center – closed Friday, March 13 (508-359-2715)
● The Department of Public Works Town Garage – (508-906-3003)

Police and Fire will remain open to respond to public safety related matters as they arise.
Emergency dispatch has included enhanced screenings to further diagnose any calls with
infectious diseases.

Although Town buildings will be closed to the public, staff will continue to work. Residents seeking services or having questions may contact Town departments directly. Many Town services can be provided over e-mail, by phone, or by mail. Residents are also able to use the Town website for many services: https://www.town.medfield.net/.

Town officials would like to thank the public for their understanding during this challenging time for our community. The situation involving COVID-19 continues to evolve and Town officials remain in close contact with state officials, the Board of Health, and the Town’s Emergency Management Director to share information and guidance. These building closings are intended to help employees and the public practice social distancing, a tactic aimed at helping stop the spread of COVID-19. At this time, there remains no indication of community spread of coronavirus in Medfield.

Coronavirus resources for local government leaders

 

Governments, agencies and communities around the globe are currently responding to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in China in December.

 

The virus is named “SARS-CoV-2,” and the disease it causes is “coronavirus disease 2019,” commonly known as COVID-19.

 

Because communities and municipal leaders are often on the front lines in emergency situations, the following are some helpful resources to inform local leaders and help them respond.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reports that the risk of COVID-19 to the general public in Massachusetts remains low.

 

In response to the coronavirus outbreak, the DPH has:

  • Established an Incident Command Structure to facilitate regular dissemination of information from federal and state partners to statewide stakeholders
  • Launched a new website that provides up-to-date information on the status of novel coronavirus for all residents (www.mass.gov/2019coronavirus)
  • Developed and disseminated clinical advisories to all Massachusetts health care providers and issued guidance to hospitals, health systems and Emergency Medical Services
  • Scheduled calls with other key health care partners including local boards of health

On Feb. 28, the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory received approval to begin testing patients for COVID-19, in accordance with guidance from the U.S. CDC. Only those who are experiencing flu-like symptoms and have recently traveled to China or have had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 should be tested, according to the DPH.

 

Those who have traveled to affected areas within the past 21 days are advised to contact their local board of health or health department. Those who have recently traveled to affected areas and are experiencing lower respiratory illness symptoms, such as, but not limited to, fever, cough, and shortness of breath, are advised to also contact their health care provider immediately.

 

Clinicians who have patients they think may have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should contact the DPH via the 24/7 EPI line (617-983-6800).

 

Individuals who are in voluntary self-quarantine continue to be monitored by their local boards of health.

 

Currently, there is no vaccine available to prevent COVID-19 and no medication available to treat the disease. Treatment is supportive care and relief of symptoms.

 

Local officials are encouraged to remind residents and businesses of the following best practices to avoid exposure to the virus:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds at a time.
  • Using alcohol-based hand rubs and gels.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Avoid sharing food utensils, containers and other personal items.

Those who have any cold or flu symptoms can help others by:

  • Staying home when you are sick.
  • Covering your cough or sneezes.
  • Wearing a mask if you leave home and have a cough.

This is a rapidly evolving situation, and this information may change as updates are available from the DPH and U.S. CDC.
