Hinkley Helpers Reveals Fun, Inclusive Playground Design to be Built

$10,000 left to fundraise, final deadline to buy a brick is August 31st

Medfield, MA, July 31, 2023 — Zipline! Friendship swings! Ninja Wall! Oh my! Nearly a year since launching its fundraising campaign, Hinkley Helpers, an initiative of the Medfield Foundation Inc., has revealed the final playground design to become a town destination at Stephen Hinkley Memorial Park. After thoughtful deliberation between the Medfield Parks and Recreation Commission and Hinkley Helpers, the two committees selected local New England playground expert Childscapes to build a fun, inclusive playscape for generations of children, parents and caretakers to enjoy. To add the zipline, Hinkley Helpers needs to raise $10,000 and will extend its buy-a-brick campaign to a final deadline of August 31, 2023.

The playground design was chosen for the diversity of play offered for all ages and abilities and considerably updates the nearly thirty-year-old playground currently at Hinkley Park. The new playground will allow for progressive play, aging up equipment to accommodate and challenge children of all ages and abilities, which was significantly requested by the Hinkley Helpers’ initial community survey. With these modern components, accessible poured-in-place ground cover, and additional benches and tables, every child and caregiver will have the opportunity to enjoy a new town destination.

“Buy a Brick” Deadline is August 31, 2023

To buy a brick, please visit https://tinyurl.com/Hinkley-Helpers, select the $150 (4×8)  or $250 (8×8) option on the “Hinkley Helper Brick Campaign,” and complete the informational form on the same site.

MFi 2023 Summer Camp Fund Appeal

Medfield Foundation 2023 Summer Camp Fund Appeal

Adults and children throughout Medfield have happy memories of summer camp. From a traditional experience in the woods to skill building to specialized camps, many Medfielders cherish these summer camp experiences and the friends they made there…

How would you feel if you were left out of that rite of childhood summers?

Before the summer camp season begins, the Medfield Foundation (MFi) board wants the town to know that there is a higher and significant need for assistance by Medfield families whose children yearn to attend camp, but because of difficult financial situations at home they would be unable to attend. It can be particularly challenging to grow up in an affluent community, but not have the resources of friends’ families.

The Medfield Foundation encourages you to make a tax deductible donation to help Medfield children attend summer camp! There are easy ways to make your donation or to find out more:

  1. Send your check to the Medfield Foundation, PO Box 745, Medfield MA 02052. Please make your check out to Medfield Foundation, Inc and then please write “CAMP” in the memo line!
  2. Use this link to donate:  http://medfieldfoundation.org/donate/

Over the past six years, the Medfield Foundation Board responded to this unmet need by creating the Children’s Camp Fund. Together with the generosity of our Medfield donors, well over $45,000 has been raised, which ensured summers full of Medfield’s Parks and Recreation Summer Adventure Camp weeks, along with other Medfield based camps. Scores of children from our town experienced the special magic of a variety of summer camp sessions and swimming at Hinkley Pond. As a result of that success the Medfield Foundation Board unanimously voted to make the Children’s Camp Fund an ongoing fund, and this year hope to raise even more due to financial constraints as a result of significant increases to electricity, heating, food, and other necessities.

We hope you will thoughtfully consider donating to the MFi Camp Fund so children who would otherwise be unable to go to camp can experience that rite of childhood summers!

And if you are need of financial assistance for your children to attend a Medfield based summer camp, please do not hesitate to contact Medfield Outreach by calling 508-359-7121 x3421 or x3422 or via email at this address: medfieldoutreach@medfield.net.

Did you know…

The Medfield Foundation (MFi) is a 100% volunteer run 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable corporation whose mission is to enrich the lives of Medfield residents, build a stronger community, and facilitate raising and allocation of private funds for public needs in the town of Medfield. Since its inception in 2001, the Medfield Foundation has raised over $2 million to support community-wide initiatives in Medfield.

MFi was founded on the realization that some residents were interested in contributing more than town taxes to support projects and services that would enrich life in Medfield. Annual fundraising revenue varies each year as the initiatives and needs in the town change. You are urged to go to http://medfieldfoundation.org/.

MEDFIELD FOUNDATION LEGACY FUND NOW ACCEPTING
NON-PROFIT GRANT APPLICATIONS
The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund has announced that applications are now being
accepted for its 2023 Community Impact Grants. Up to $30,000 in grants will be
awarded, and any Medfield-based nonprofit or Town department is eligible. Applicants
are welcome to submit a grant request online at https://www.medfieldfoundation.org/ by
March 17, 2023.
The Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund Community Board will review all submissions
and select the finalists who will be invited to PITCH IT!, a Shark Tank-type event to be
held in person on April 12, 2023. At PITCH IT!, applicants will present their proposal,
goals, and financial needs and directly engage with the Community Board on their
projects. The Community Board will make its final selection of grant recipients for the
2023 funding round in early May, 2023.
This year marks the third round of Legacy Fund Community Impact grants. To date,
over $48,000 has been awarded to seven organizations, including the Cultural Alliance
of Medfield, the Friends of the MHS Theatre Society, the Friends of the Medfield Rail
Trail, Medfield Cares About Prevention, Medfield Outreach, The Peak House Heritage
Center, and Sustainable Medfield.
Grantees have used their awards to further important projects in Medfield and, in some
cases, to leverage significant additional resources such as matching grants or federal or
state funding. This year’s applicants should be prepared to illustrate a strong and
compelling current need for funds, and possibly present how those funds may generate
additional investments in the Medfield community as well.
Act fast to take advantage of this spectacular opportunity!

Henry Marcel – Medfield’s Holiday Lights Maestro

Henry (Hank) Marcel was the first Medfield Foundation Volunteer of the Year in 2008, primarily because he was single handedly responsible for doing MEMO’s holiday tree lighting downtown for decades.

Below is that 2008 Medfield Foundation Volunteer Awards proclamation:

MEDFIELD FOUNDATION RECOGNIZES HENRY J. MARCEL AS ITS
MEDFIELD VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

The Medfield Foundation proudly proclaims Henry J. Marcel as its Medfield Volunteer of the Year. Henry Marcel is a large steady man with an even larger and steadier presence, whose contribution to making the Town of Medfield a better place have been both constant and impressive for many, many years. Henry, or Hank, has often worked behind the scenes without fanfare or recognition to deliver highly visible, easily recognizable, and much appreciated things to Medfield for decades. Hank has impacted the Town of Medfield in three main areas. First and foremost, Hank is the one who has lit our downtown with holiday lights at Christmas for decades. Second, Hank is the one who has done all the work to electrify Medfield Day and to do the other grunt work that makes it happen for 27 years. Third, Hank is a long time volunteer Medfield Fire Department firefighter, who is often seen proudly wearing a Medfield Fire Department tee shirt.

Hank has been Medfield’s Mr. Christmas, having organized and presided over stringing Medfield’s Christmas lights for MEMO for over twenty-five years. Observers in the know in recent years are used to seeing Hank out and about the downtown in the cold every year after Thanksgiving stringing the lights in Baxter Park, in front of Lord’s, at the Town House, and in front of the First Parish Meeting House. However, the keen long time observers will know that Hank started out decades earlier by actually shutting down his then electrical contracting business, Medfield Electric, for weeks every Christmas, and paying all his employees to help him to string the Christmas lights on every tree up and down Main Street, trees that are now exist only in memories. Over time, the Christmas lights became focused on Baxter Park. In recent years, Hank has buried electrical conduit under the park to facilitate setting up his displays, and he has been adding a tree in any year he can, to make a larger display. MEMO buys the Christmas lights.

Henry’s smile grows ever wider each year as he watches the faces of the town’s children light up in joy during the tree lighting count down, as the lights on the trees come one a tree at a time, culminating with the lighting of the Christmas tree. What an annual gift from Henry to the residents of Medfield to provide so much joy and happiness to so many children and their families.

The annual Medfield Day event is literally powered by Hank, as he creates and operates several whole electrical services for the events locations, calling on his extended group of electrician friends, such as Larry Kilkenny, to make it all come together and in time. Hank has been one who has worked from before dawn until after dark to make Medfield Day happen: he has lined the booths, coordinated the set-up and break-down, doing whatever tasks needed to be done, and he ran the event several times. When the Medfield Night Fireworks were added, Henry was delighted to work on them, despite making his Medfield Day hours longer, especially when he saw how much pleasure the fireworks gave to so many people.

Hank started on the Medfield Fire Department in 1974 under the direction of Chief Ryan. In one untoward incident in 1986 Hank was working at a car fire, when the vehicle rolled and pinned him between two cars breaking his leg. In 1992 he became the Fire Alarm Superintendent and he still oversees the operation of the town’s fire alarm system. Hank semi-retired as a firefighter in 1998, no longer responding to calls, but he remains a resource for electrical problems at the Department.

The Medfield Foundation is proud to name Henry Marcel its first Medfield Volunteer of the Year.
