1 PM to 5 PM
Hospital Hill Fields
44 Hospital Road | Medfield, MA

On June 8th, kids and adults of all ages will gather to play Frisbee Disc Golf and

community.

Special prizes will be awarded for best Hawaiian shirt. Bring your tropical vibes
and beach attire. Kan Jam, Cornhole, beach volleyball, and other summertime sand classics will be enjoyed by all. Come to enjoy music, food, and fun!
Don’t forget to bring your Agame for the tournament; top finishers will
receive prizes from Noon Hill Grill, Blue Moon, Donut Express, Zebra’s, and
other sponsors. There will be tournament Tshirts for sale at the event.

What is Disc Golf?
Played much like traditional golf, Disc Golf involves throwing a Frisbee disc instead of a ball and clubs.  The goal is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws. Players start from a tee area and throw their Frisbee disc to a “hole” (an elevated metal basket). Players try to navigate the 9 hole course in the fewest amount of throws as possible while enjoying the challenge of negotiating the environment they are surrounded by.

Players will register in teams of up to 4 members. Tee times on the course will be assigned and the schedule emailed to participants, with time preference priority given to preregistrants.

Parking is easy and free.

Jazz at Dwight-Derby House 6/6

Press release from Jo Ellen Collins, Secretary, Friends of the Dwight-Derby House –

Second of Dwight-Derby House Kitchen Concert Series

Features Medfield’s Jazz Trumpeter Tom Duprey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Medfield, MA–On Thursday, June 6, from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm, The Friends of the Dwight-Derby House will host the second of its Kitchen Concert Series featuring Medfield’s stellar trumpeter Tom Duprey and accomplished jazz guitarist David Hawthorne of Cambridge.

The event, held at the Dwight-Derby House at 7 Frairy Street in Medfield, is a “First Thursdays” event and will help to raise funds for the next phase of restoration of the house: installation of a working kitchen.

Tickets for this fun and intimate evening of jazz are $25 per person and will be sold at the door. Ticket price includes everything but the kitchen sink: beer and wine tasting provided by Palumbo Liquors, delicious finger food furnished by Basil Restaurant and razor-sharp and energetic trumpet and jazz guitar by the innovative and talented Tom and David, who are core members of James Merenda’s TickleJuice, who’s first CD will be released this summer. Tom and David frequently collaborate, but are accomplished musicians in their own right.

Tom has performed for Dionne Warwick, Johnny Mathis, Robert Goulet, Tommy Tune, Herb Reed and The Platters, as well as various other artists.  Since 1982 he has performed in a variety of musical theatre productions in regional, college and downtown Boston theatres as well as in regional orchestras, jazz, R&B, solo, chamber and other freelance gigs. As an educator, Tom teaches trumpet at his private studio and is band director for Dover-Sherborn middle school and elementary brass instructor for Medfield Public Schools.

David Hawthorne has performed over the years in Boston, New York, Munich, Flagstaff, and many other cities and locales. He has led and participated in many clinics, and his compositions include works for orchestra, string quartet, jazz big band, and his own small bands.

Get ready to tap your feet and be amazed. Join us for good food, good music and a good time.

The Friends of the Dwight-Derby House is a citizen’s group established to support the active use, restoration, maintenance and preservation of this historic property.  Today, it continues to raise funds through grants, individual and corporate donations, and sale of memorabilia. The donation of time, talent and effort by many local volunteers has also contributed to its restoration.

From Scratch doing dinner Wed – Sat

Our family’s favorite breakfast place in Medfield, From Scratch,  has started doing dinners.  It is now open until 8 PM on Wednesdays to Saturdays.  Kristen and Deb just gave me the news that the food is great – the Chicken Alfredo reportedly allowed one to taste each of its elements, and was completely finished.  It is great to have a new family dinner option in town.

Jazz up your day on Saturday, April 7

Notice of this really creative and fun event, from the Medfield Music Association –

As part of the “Dollars for Duke” campaign to send the Medfield High School Jazz Band to the Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center, May 4 to 6, Jazz Band members will be taking part in “Jazz ‘Round Town” on Saturday, April 7.

Members of the band will be giving public performances at various locations around Medfield on April 7, kicking off with a 9:30 to 11 a.m. performance at Blue Moon. They will also be playing in front of Needham Bank from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and at Lovell’s from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The last performance of the day will be at the Gazebo from Noon to 1:30 p.m. All performances are rain or shine.

In keeping with the campaign theme, Jazz Band members will be using top hats to collect both cash and check donations at each “Jazz ‘Round Town” site. (Checks should be made payable to Medfield Music Association.)

To date, the association’s “Dollars for Duke” campaign has raised more than $3,000 toward its $12,000 goal to cover the Jazz Band’s trip to the Essentially Ellington competition. (The estimated cost of the trip has increased due to the need for an additional day of lodging and travel.)

In addition to the funds raised for Essentially Ellington through the “Dollars for Duke” campaign, a portion of the proceeds from corporate sponsorships for the annual Jazz Night at Medfield High School on May 30 will also help to fund the trip.

The Medfield High School Jazz Band is only one of 15 high school bands chosen from across the U.S. and Canada to compete in Essentially Ellington, judged by jazz great Wynton Marsalis.

This is the second major competition for the jazz band in just a matter of months. It also earned a spot in the Charles Mingus High School Competition in New York in February, with senior Paul Wagenseller taking home an outstanding soloist award.

Donation checks for the jazz band can also be mailed to Medfield Music Association, P.O. Box 115, Medfield, MA 02052. “Dollars for Duke” should be noted on the check.

For more information about “Dollars for Duke” and the Medfield Music Association, go to www.medfieldmusicassociation.com.

MYAC holding town wide dance 3/23

Hello everyone!

Medfield Youth Action Committee is pleased to formally and officially announce our first Swing Dance Night! The event is on Friday, March 23rd from 7-10pm at the Pfaff center! We will have a swing dance lesson at the beginning and a live performance from the Medfield High School Jazz Band! We will also have apple pie and icecream! Tickets are being sold at Lords for $3 or contact medfieldyac@gmail.com to reserve them.  We also hope to host more dances in the near future and encourage the education of dance in Medfield and build on the success of the first one. Hopefully the next night will be a Latin night with Cha-Cha and Salsa dancing!
As we said in the meeting in February, we have used the planning of this event to help us in understanding how we will construct the manual. That will be our next major project moving forward in addition to planning and running more dances.
To follow up on our youth members- we held a meeting a week after our February one with all of you for students for underclassmen interested in joining.  Of those at the first meeting, we have a solid group of 22 freshman/sophomores that are consistently coming to meetings! Today we taught them how to swing dance, so they will be helping out at this first upcoming dance.
Again, let us know how we can help your organization in town or if you have any ideas of events/changes that you want to see happen! We will also keep everyone informed about our current projects.
Thank you for your support,
MYAC

Volunteers

Yesterday afternoon I reviewed the nominations for those suggested for recognition as the Medfield Foundation volunteer of the year.  It was a truly awe inspiring couple of hours reading about the wonderful work that people are doing to make Medfield a better place on such a wide and diverse range of fronts, and I was filled with enthusiasm by their deeds.  We are all beneficiaries of these volunteers’ efforts, either directly, or by their making Medfield generally a better place, and we owe a debt to the stalwart nominators who took time to alert and educate us via the nominations.

I encourage everyone to attend the volunteer recognition event that will take place from 4- 6 PM on Sunday, March 18 at The Center.  The recognition reception is free, open to the public, and last year was an absolutely magical time as the nominators and their nominees recounted in vignette after first person vignette what they had been doing.

You can read about the incredible things that those previously suggested for recognition have done at http://www.medfieldfoundation.org/volunteer.html

The Medfield Foundation is proud that the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation has sponsored the Medfield Foundation volunteer of the year event this year.  Whole Foods Market will again cater the refreshments.

Medfield Youth Action Committee (MYAC)

The Medfield Youth Action Committee (MYAC) held its first large public meeting yesterday with community leaders they invited to join them.  The half dozen Medfield High School students announced that they intend to

  1. do fun events, such as dinners and/or dances to promote the community
  2. promote community volunteering opportunities for students
  3. prepare a manual that will explain how to do an event

MYAC members said their first event will be a community wide dinner dance they hope to hold on March 23 at the Dale Street School.  They hope to have the MHS Jazz Band and/or jazz combos perform.
