Letter of thanks today from the Woodland Theatre.  Some of the things we do as selectmen are really fun, such as watching this play partly from the stage.  Their play was a high quality production and really entertaining –

Angel Run – help the MFi help Medfield families in need

MFi_AngelRun

Sunday, December 8th is the date of the 2013 Angel Run. While the Medfield Foundation has taken over running the Angel Run, it still benefits families in need. If you’ve never been, it’s a great event, and if you have attended, then you know how much fun it is.

Laura Mills- Smith is running the Angel Run Party this year and is in need of bakers to share a favorite treat to help make the party happen. If you could volunteer to make a couple dozen of one of your family’s favorites, it would be wonderful! Treats should be wrapped in individual servings (Plastic wrap or Baggies), and no nuts please (per the Board of Health).

You can bring your goodies to the Wheelock cafeteria on Sunday, December 8th starting at 11:30. If you won’t be able to be at the Run on Sunday, but still like to bake, you can deliver your item on Friday or Saturday to Laura, at 102 Elm Street (house is on the corner of Philip and Elm- driveway on Philip). There will be a cooler on her screened in porch if she’s not home. Please tuck a slip of paper in with your goodies that includes your name and what you baked.

You can confirm that you will bake by contacting Laura at lauramillssmith@verizon.net or 359-0161. She will be able to answer any questions you may have. (If you’ve already received a request to bake, we’re sorry!)

Thank you for helping to make the Angel Run a success.

Subject: A Big MCPE Community Trivia Night Thank You!
Dear Trivia Team Captains,
Thank you so much for making our first-ever MCPE Community Trivia Night a tremendous success!  Your participation, energy, and commitment to our Medfield schools helped us raise approximately $5700 – bringing us closer to our $80K goal for the year.
We’ve made notes about how to improve the event in the future, and we’d also love to hear your suggestions as well.  Please feel free to forward your comments to me.
**One player accidentally took someone else’s brown leather jacket (male) from the coat rack.  Please let us know if you have it, and we can connect both of you to make the swap.**
Please pass our thanks to your teammates and have a wonderful holiday season!
All the best,
Kim Price and the MCPE Trivia Team

Kim,
Please pass along my thanks and congratulations to the Medfield Coalition for Public Education individuals who put on the trivia evening, for crafting and executing a wonderfully fun time.
Only suggestion from this quarter would be to lower the music volume next year, in consideration of those with harder of hearing ears due to too many loud rock concerts in college.
Best,
Pete

MCPE to BoS – “losers!”

The Medfield Coalition for Public Education proved last Friday night that the town administration is a bunch of losers, as the town house team lost the MCPE’s trivia night contest at The Center.

A sold out crowd of 48 teams of four competed in two preliminary rounds to qualify for the championship round, and the town house team was out in the prelims.  Town Administrator Mike Sullivan noted that while he and Selectman Mark Fisher felt that they held their own, and that the town house team was really bolstered by the strong presence of town planner, Sarah Raposa, but she was unable to make up for the trivia vacuum that was Selectman Peterson.

Judging from the number of participants and the wonderful food from local establishments, the evening was a success for the MCPE and the participants.

MCPE community trivia night – 11/15

I just registered “The Toadies of the Town Hall” for the Medfield Coalition for Public Education’s Trivia Night, so everyone else better step aside and clear a path for us, as we are planning on winning.  I cannot imagine that anyone will be brave enough to take us (Mike Sullivan, Mark Fisher, Scott McDermott, and me, “The Trivia Tuna”) on – – –

Art in our midst

From Medfeild resident, Jean Mineo –
Happy fall! I’m writing with news about two upcoming art projects.
This Saturday Sept. 7, 11  at 12:30 pm, I’ll be leading a free tour of the outdoor art installation at the beautiful plaza at the Christian Science Church in Boston. Boston Sculptors Gallery has installed 23 monumental and intimate sculptures on the site, on view through Oct. 31. The tour will leave from the entrance to their library at 210 Mass. Ave at 11 am and will last 1 – 1½ hours. Bring the kids! If you drive in from Medfield, take the Pike to the Pru exit and you can park under the Pru at the end of the ramp exit, or look for street parking. This garage is at the opposite end of the plaza from where the tour starts, so walk through the plaza to Mass. Ave. and see how many sculptures you spot along the way. More information here: http://convergenceexhibit.blogspot.com
 Andy Zimmermann’s “Liminal Bloom”IMG_0619.JPG
Next up on Medfield Day, Sat. Sept. 21, join me and the Medfield Cultural District for a community art project in the pocket park between Zebra’s and the new Starbuck’s from 9 am – 3 pm. It’s called Visions and Voices and gives you a place to write your ideas for the park and then have your picture taken to be included as a poster on the walkway a few weeks later. Pictures will only be taken on Medfield Day, but the kiosk where you can share your ideas will be up through Oct. 7, so come back and “see what your neighbors are saying.” More information here: http://medfieldculturaldistrict.org
For information on other cultural events in Medfield, check out the Cultural Council’s on-line calendar: http://medfieldculture.org/calendar-page/
Hope to see you at one of these upcoming events!

Jeri Bergonzi at Dwight-Derby House 9/5

From the Friends of the Dwight-Derby House, Inc. – www.dwightderbyhouse.org

Dwight-Derby House Kitchen Concert Series Continues with

Medfield’s Jeri Bergonzi

Medfield, MA–On Thursday, September 5, from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm, The Friends of the Dwight-Derby House will host the fourth of its Kitchen Concert Series featuring Medfield’s stellar pianist and jazz vocalist Jeri Bergonzi and accomplished bassist Barry Smith.

The event, held at the Dwight-Derby House at 7 Frairy Street in Medfield, is a “First Thursdays” event and will help to raise funds for the next phase of restoration of the house: installation of a working kitchen.

Tickets for this fun and intimate evening of jazz are $25 per person and will be sold at the door. Ticket price includes everything but the kitchen sink: beer and wine tasting provided by Larkin Liquors, delicious finger food furnished by The Jeep Grill and outstanding jazz by the talented Jeri and her bassist Barry.

Jeri grew up singing the songs of her beloved Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell while listening to the progressive rock bands of the1970s.  After graduating from Boston College with a degree in literature and philosophy she decided to get serious about her piano playing.  She studied jazz improvisation with the legendary Charlie Banacos and followed her newly found career path playing and singing the clubs and hotel venues in Boston, including Turner Fisheries at the Weston Hotel, Oak Bar at the Copley Plaza, Bay Tower Room, Scullers Jazz Club, Toff’’s Lounge of the Royal Sonesta Hotel, Marriott Hotels at Copley and Longwharf, the Ritz Carlton, and the Hyatt Regency.  Stints with Top 40 dance bands, GB groups and solo piano tours in Europe helped pay the rent while honing her jazz skills.  Jeri’s repertoire spans the jazz tradition from the standards of Porter, Gershwin, and Ellington to the contemporary sounds of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner. Today, you are most likely to catch her performing with her jazz vocal trio or playing at the Top of the Hub with Tony Carelli’s quintet, which features two horn charts from the memorable Blue Note years.

Bassist Barry Smith is an assistant professor at Berklee College of Music. He earned his Bachelors of Music at the Manhattan School of Music and his Masters in Music from Julliard. Barry has performed with Al Cohn and Zoot Simms, Double Image with Dave Samuels and David Friedman, the Joe Hunt Group, and the Pat Metheny Quartet.  He has toured with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, the Gerry Mulligan Big Band, the Gerry Niewood Quartet, and the Red Rodney/Ira Sullivan Quintet and has recorded with the Alfred Cardim Trio, Lionel Hampton, the Steve Rochinski Quartet, Red Rodney and Ira Sullivan, Ed Saindon, and Danny Weiner.

Get ready to tap your feet and be amazed. Join us for good food, good music and a good time.

The Friends of the Dwight-Derby House is a citizen’s group established to support the active use, restoration, maintenance and preservation of this historic property.  Today, it continues to raise funds through grants, individual and corporate donations, and sale of memorabilia. The donation of time, talent and effort by many local volunteers has also contributed to its restoration.

Bob Maguire recognition

The dinner to recognize and thank Bob Maguire for his twenty-two years of exemplary service to the Town of Medfield schools was a rollicking good time last night as a myriad of speakers both recounted and roasted Bob for his caring and his successes.  Richard Shapiro started things off with the incredibly humorous history of Bob’s tenure, focusing especially on Bob’s long anguish over whether Richard Shapiro or Richard DeSorgher was the bigger pain in the ass for him.
