Joe Avellone in town

Joseph Avellone, M.D. is a Democrat running for governor, and he was in town Monday to address the Democratic Town Committee meeting at the Town House.  I was there to attend the Lyme Disease Study Committee meeting, but first went to check my mail.  I had an opportunity to exchange a couple of words with him as I going by to get my mail.  He told me that he is a former Wellesley selectman, so he knows the issues involved in running a town.

Shawn Dooley event ar Zebra’s

Email from Shawn Dooley, a Republican running for Dan Winslow’s seat in the legislature from Medfield  –

I was wondering if you could put something on your blog about my fundraiser at Zebras.   I really hope to get a lot of people from Medfield there.  It would be nice to raise some money too, but my priority is to meet as many Medfield residents as possible.  I always believe that is the key to being a successful elected official.  – Get out there and be accessible, listen, and do whatever you can to help.  You definitely seem to embrace that philosophy.  I only wish more people were as passionate about their town as you are.
Anyway,  hope you can make it as well.
Shawn

Shawn Dooley running for rep

Yesterday afternoon I met at the new Dunkin’ Donuts with Shawn Dooley, a Norfolk resident who is running as a Republican for Dan Winslow’s former seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.  After telling Shawn about the Medfield State Hospital site’s future being the biggest issue currently pending in town, I then took him to the meeting of the State Hospital Advisory Committee yesterday evening.  SHAC was interviewing the consultant they have hired to run a visioning session for town residents to address the future of the MSH site.

Shawn is a former builder and current town clerk and school Committee member in Norfolk.  He was also  Dan Winslow’s campaign manager.  Shawn said he does have two opponents, one from Norfolk and one from Walpole.  His website is www.Dooley4Rep.com.

BTW, from my now one visit each to Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, I give the latter a slight edge on décor, although the small table and chairs right inside the Dunkin’ Donuts door were quite comfortable.  I was also pleased not to have trouble exiting the Dunkin’ Donuts onto Rte 27, but it was after 7 PM.  We were leaving to go to the Town House, and even at that hour I saw no way to get out onto Rte 109 given the traffic backed up from the light.

Election today

Today is the paper ballot election at The Center on the debt over ride question of whether the town should buy the 31 acre Red Gate Farm Property for $1.4 m.    The polls are open until 8 PM.  When I voted at 8 AM, I was #25 in Precinct 1 to have voted, so with four precincts maybe about 100 people total had voted.  That makes it look like it will be a really light turnout of our 8,000+ registered voters in town.

Election Monday 10/21

Medfield has an election this coming Monday, October 21, 2013 to determine  whether to purchase the 31 acre Red Gate Farm property for the price of $1.4 m. that was negotiated by developers with the owner, Robin Kenny.  The purchase passed at the special town meeting (STM) last week, but the purchase only happens if it also has passed at the election ballot on Monday.

I support the town’s purchase, and wanted to explain why.

The town has a right of first refusal to buy the property because of the fact that the property for years paid little real estate taxes because the Kenny family had placed it in G. L. c. 61 designation as forest lands – the state encourages forest holdings by providing for lower real estate taxes.  Then, in exchange for the lower real estate taxes, the town gets a right of first refusal when the property comes out of forestry designation, and that is what is happening now.

The developers have fully permitted a seven lot subdivision on the property.  I find it to be a nicely crafted and a sensitive development, but I have decided that the town will be better served by buying the property for the following reasons:

  • town residents will get greater rights of access to the whole 31 acres if the town owns the land, than if we only have the right of way across the land.
  • it is more important to me that the town own and control this land where it is adjacent to the 25 acres scout lands to the South.
  • the price seems remarkably reasonable to me, for what the town will get.

However, town ownership does come at a cost, and voters will have to determine for themselves whether they are so interested in the town ownership that they are willing to personally pay, albeit at a great price, to acquire the land.  For me, the benefits outweigh the costs.

I hope that everyone will vote on Monday.

1/7/14 election to replace Winslow

This from John Nunnari –

HOUSE SETS DATE FOR SPECIAL ELECTION TO REPLACE WINSLOW
A special election to replace former Rep. Daniel Winslow in the 9th Norfolk House district will be held on Jan. 7, 2014, the House ordered on Monday. Less than half way through his second two-year term, Winslow resigned over the weekend, leaving his former House district unrepresented to take a position as vice president and general counsel at Rimini Street, a Las-Vegas-based global provider of “enterprise software support services.” The Norfolk Republican delivered his farewell address to colleagues last week during his final session as a member of the House. During that session, he cast a vote to repeal the sales tax on software design services. After the House adopted the special election order, Secretary of State William Galvin announced primaries in the special election will be held on Dec.10 and that potential candidates will have until Oct. 29 to submit at least 150 nomination signatures to local officials for certification. The district includes Norfolk, Plainville, Wrentham, one precinct in Walpole, one precinct in Millis, and two precincts in Medfield

Winslow resigning

From John Nunnari –

WINSLOW RESIGNING HOUSE SEAT FOR PRIVATE SECTOR POST: Once considered to have a promising future in Bay State Republican politics, Rep. Daniel Winslow said Monday morning he plans to resign from the House later this month to pursue a private sector job in software services, an ironic twist after vocally opposing the new software design services tax with his GOP colleagues. Winslow announced that he has accepted a position as vice president and general counsel at Rimini Street, a Las-Vegas-based global provider of “enterprise software support services.” According to an aide, Winslow intends to keep his primary residence in Norfolk, but will do some work out of the San Francisco office. Winslow has submitted his resignation letter to the House clerk effective Sept. 29, necessitating yet another special election in the Legislature and dropping the ranks of the minority party to 29. “My excitement in joining Rimini Street is tempered by my sadness in leaving the House.  I have been thankful for every minute of my service in the Legislature, for the honor of representing the people of the 9th Norfolk towns, and for the opportunity to contribute to debate and solutions to improve our Commonwealth,” Winslow said in a statement. “I hope that my efforts have made a difference and that the ideas I have advanced can be considered in future sessions. I fully appreciate the sacrifice of public service, by our legislators and their families, and hope to remain engaged in civic life in the future.” Hours after Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Sunday that she would run for governor in 2014, Winslow Tweeted that he would have an announcement of his own about his future Monday morning. Many assumed the former judge and general counsel to Gov. Mitt Romney would run for Attorney General after talking with colleagues in recent weeks about the possibility of seeking the top prosecutor job if Coakley stepped aside. 11:14 A.M

Election

Town Clerk,  Carol Mayer, told me that the Medfield League of Women Voters donated to the town three election banners, one of which hung across Main Street by the railroad tracks this past week.  The other two banners are for the annual town meeting (ATM) and the town elections.
