MSBA voted Medfield in

I attended the Massachusetts School Building Authority meeting this afternoon at the request of the Superintendent to represent the Town of Medfield Select Board, and I am happy to report that the MSBA just voted to accept Medfield back into its program.

School Committee Chair Michelle Kirkby shared the town’s remarks and thanks.

  1. Wonderful news, but I wonder if we’re now left with a conundrum. Both the Dale Street School and the Pfaff Center need to be replaced, but MSBA funds cannot be used for any part of non-school construction. Common sense says a) the combined footprint of the two properties allows rebuilding at Dale Street without requiring the building to be ‘shoehorned’ into the existing school site, and b) many of the Parks and Rec activities at Pfaff can and should be piggybacked onto structural facilities (e.g. gymnasium) at Dale. Will MBSA allow an adjacent facility to co-exist, or does a new Pfaff Center need to unnecessarily replicate some of Dale’s recreational square footage? (If any part of the preceding is factually incorrect, please let me know and I will amend or delete the response.)
