MMA wreaths at football game

From the Medfield Music Association –

Going to the football game tonight? Wreath orders taken to benefit music

MMA

This is a festival trip year for more than 150 Medfield High School music students across band, orchestra and concert choir, and Medfield Music Association has launched its annual holiday wreath sale once again to help raise funds for trip scholarships. Many residents and businesses take advantage of the wreath sale to get a jump on their holiday decorating while also supporting Medfield music students.

Wreath sales also benefit Blake Middle School students who participate in the annual Six Flags music festival trip. Both the Blake and MHS trips are in the spring.

Anyone interested in placing an order for holiday wreaths can do so at the Warriors football game tonight, 11/13, at Medfield High School (as well as by mail). The deadline to order wreaths is Friday, Nov. 20. Wreaths are $20 each, and buyers have two bow color options. Wreaths will be delivered to homes and businesses on Saturday, Nov. 28.  To obtain an order form, go to the home page of www.medfieldmusicassociation.com or to the school “Thursday packet” at  http://www.medfield.net/images/tpacket/mma_annual_wreath_sale.pdf.

For more than 20 years, Medfield High School music ensembles have earned numerous awards from the biennial festival trip in recognition of their outstanding performances. Pending school committee approval, this year the trip destination is Williamsburg/Virginia Beach, with the students slated to leave April 28 and return May 1, 2016.

Veterans Day

Veterans breakfast

Medfield’s Veterans Service Officer Ron Griffin started and has put on a breakfast for veterans on Veterans Day at The Center for several years, and he is kind enough to include the selectmen.  This morning Richard and I attended, along with Senator Jim Timilty and Representatives Shawn Dooley and Denise Garlick.  Shawn brought along his two young sons, one of whom sat on Shawn’s lap during the speeches.

Ron Griffin arranges for MHS students from the student lead group, Warriors for the Warriors, to act as the servers at the breakfast, and this morning there over 20 student servers, as well as Ron’s colleagues from the Town House, Mike Sullivan and John Naff assisting with the cooking.  John brought along his two daughters to help.

It is wonderful for both the veterans and the students that they get to share time together.  Ron also has veterans speak to the sixth graders each year.

The above photo of the Veterans breakfast is from last year.

Update on Rte 109 RR closing – 9AM Friday through Monday

RR

This update today from Mike Sullivan –

We just finished meeting with the railroad representatives (Mass DOT, MBTA and Mass Coastal Railroad). Route 109 will close to traffic at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 13 and will remain closed until Tuesday, November 17. During that time the badly deteriorated railroad grade crossing will be replaced with a new concrete grade crossing. It’s possible, depending on how the works progresses, that 109 would be open Monday afternoon, but to be on the safe side, we are assuming it will be closed all day Monday. Friday, commuter traffic will be able to use 109 until 9:00 a.m., after which detours will be in place to reroute traffic. Every effort will be made to provide access to local businesses on 109 through the weekend but 109 at the railroad crossing will be closed, as replacement of the grade crossing will make it impassible. To avoid getting caught up in traffic, it would be wise to avoid the center of Town this weekend, particularly, during commuter traffic periods. School buses using that section of 109 will be rerouted on Friday afternoon and Monday. Every effort is being made to alert residents, businesses, public and private schools, churches, surrounding towns and commuters so that they will be prepared for the closure. The DPW, Police and Fire Departments will be working to reroute traffic and minimize disruptions, but 109 is a heavily travelled commuter route and carries a high volume of traffic, even during off hours, so, if at all possible, the area should be avoided from Friday morning until Tuesday.  Michael Sullivan, Town Administrator

Rte 109 RR crossing closing Friday to Monday for repairs

RR

From Mike Sullivan this afternoon –

The MBTA and Mass Coastal Railroad have made the decision to go ahead this weekend to rebuild the railroad grade crossing on Route 109. It will require shutting down Route 109 from about 10:00 a.m. Friday afternoon until sometime Monday afternoon. We met this afternoon, including School Dept. administrators, to plan for this road closure, rerouting school buses, and notifying adjacent Towns and local businesses. We will also be meeting at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow with railroad construction personnel on site to review plans for handling traffic, coordinating construction work, etc. We will be placing signs warning residents and commuters of the road closure and urging them to find other commuting or travel routes. Mass D.O.T. will be sending a representative around to local businesses to discuss the schedule and associated implications. We will advise further as additional information becomes available. Michael Sullivan, Town Administrator.

Comparison metrics

budget

This website offers a half dozen comparison metrics for each town.  It is interesting to see how we compare.  http://www.cleargov.com/massachusetts/norfolk/town/medfield/

The Pioneer Institute does the same thing too, but with much more robust data and in a more refined means.  http://pioneerinstitute.org/better_government/new-municipal-guide-provides-tools-for-local-budgeting/  The Pioneer Institute gives you an Excel spreadsheet that you can use to compare us to similar towns on a large variety of budget costs, and they even suggest the similar towns.  This is the one to use to do serious work.

Water main under Hospital Rd. RR

The new water main running from the town’s well #6 along the Charles River by Rte. 27 to the new water tower at the former MSH site has been held up in its completion while the town and its contractor waited, and waited, and waited to be scheduled to lay the water main under the railroad tracks that cross Hospital Road.  It finally happened this past weekend (after the MBTA bought that RR line and the town no longer had to  deal with CSX), and the town’s consulting engineer sent out the email and photos below.

Long day but Oliviera Construction did a good job. The 42″ casing …a 40 foot long section…is in as shown in the photographs and the excavation is now backfilled with 7 truck loads of specified flowable fill (similiar to a concrete mix but it sets up hard and is removable by an excavator). The local concrete supplier was late with his delivery of the last 4 truck loads.

Saturday and Sunday will be work by the railroad’s  contractor to continue the rail subbase preparation.
They will place crushed stone on top of the flowable fill and then install the precast concrete rail sleeper supports. The new section …100 feet or so of new rail is scheduled to be installed on Sunday.
