Governor Baker calls budget shortfall a challenge, not a catastrophe, and one that will not be solved on the backs of the cites and towns. Lieutenant Governor Polito just finished her remarks.
Nice that both are former town officials.

I heard today that a restaurant is going into the first floor of the building across Janes Avenue from the Town House. Sounds good. I do not know why, but I expected a store and gave no thoughts to restaurants.
I also heard this week that a 74 unit assisted living facility has been proposed for about 6-7 acres of land behind the Peak House, that is residential zoned, but the assisted living is apparently allowed by special permit.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.
Here’s an excerpt:
The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 24,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 9 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Medfield has a new blog! I suggest you keep an eye out for it, as I personally expect great and interesting things.
There’s a lot to love about Medfield, and the slower post-Christmas pace provides many opportunities for exploring open space, wandering around town, and just finding time to connect with friends and neighbors.
But all of this has been a new phenomenon for me. For years, my husband and I would pack up the kids and we’d drive down to the Jersey Shore to celebrate the holidays with my parents and siblings in our childhood home. It was a tradition that seemed like it would last forever, but then my Dad passed away in the summer of 2012, and my Mom died a year later. My childhood home was put on the market this fall, and on our recent trip to NJ, I couldn’t bring myself to visit the empty house.
How does one create new traditions? I’m still trying to find my way, but living in a tight-knit community like…

The Economic Develoment Committee got three responses to its Request for Expressions of Interest for the use of the town owned land on Ice House Road, Lot 3. Those submissions were –
The Board of Selectmen will hear from the Economic Development Committee at 7:40 PM on Tuesday, December 16 to discuss the EDC’s suggestion that the selectmen pursue the sports facility.
Below is the 11/21/14 EDC letter to the selectmen endorsing the sports facility –
November 21, 2014
Medfield Board of Selectmen 459 Main Street
Medfield, MA 02052
TOWN OF MEDFIELD
Economic Development Committee
TOWN HOUSE, 459 MAIN STREET MEDFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS 02052-2009
RE: Lot 3 Ice House Road
Dear Selectmen,
At a duly posted meeting of the Economic Development Committee
At their duly posted meeting on November 21, 2014, the present members of the Medfield Economic
Development Committee voted unanimously to recommend that the Town issue a Request for Proposals
(RFP) for the development of an indoor sports facility on Lot 3, Ice House Road. This decision was
based on the review of the two Expressions oflnterests reviewed by the Town on November 14, 2014.
One of the proposals was for the sports facility while the other presented a concept for
age-restricted senior housing.
The Committee reached its decision by assessing the proposal against the following selection
criteria: potential tax revenue, possible lease terms, services, connections to existing uses, job
creation; as well as with the overarching mission of the Economic Development Committee.
The vote was based on the following benefits (in no particular order of priority):
• No zoning change required, proposed use is allowable under zoning
• The use complements the existing recreational use of the Kingsbury Club
• The risk of development is privatized; the Town does not incur the capital expense or management
of such a facility
• Similar tax revenues
Notwithstanding the above, the Committee does see the value in senior housing and asserts that the
Hinkley property is better suited for housing due to its zoning and proximity to The CENTER.
The Committee also discussed the connection to the Medfield State Hospital property and ongoing
planning efforts. The Committee feels that to delay development of Lot 3 will go against the wishes
of the 2014 Annual Town Meeting vote that authorized the Selectmen to enter a lease agreement for
development of Lot 3. Further, tax revenue could be realized sooner than the eventual development
of Hospital Hill. The citizens of Medfield have demonstrated support for this type of project that
would not be suitable for overall aesthetic of Hospital Hill.
Issuing an RFP and following proper procurement may also offer the opportunity to capture more
developers with a specialty in indoor sports facilities and will level the playing field comparing
like projects. It will also offer the Town the ability to review the sublease option of the
Kingsbury Club.
The Economic Development Committee believes that the reviews performed by the various land use
committees (Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Board of Health, and Conservation Commission)
will mitigate potential negative impacts to the surrounding neighborhoods and The CENTER.
We look forward to meeting with you at your meeting on December 2, 2014.
Sincerely,
Patrick Casey, Chairman
Economic Development Committee
