New MFi Lifetime Achievement Award

This year there was one volunteer recognition nomination, that while made timely, was not received until after the deadline and selections.  To correct for that, the Medfield Foundation has decided that it will include the couple who were together jointly nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award in that errant nomination.

Therefore this year the MFi will jointly honor Mike and Caroline Standley, along with the previously announced Jeanne Bastanier Sullivan, together as the three honorees this year for the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Awards for volunteer services in and to the Town of Medfield.

Mike and Caroline Standley

Primarily for over 60 years of active citizenship to protect the town’s historic sites and open spaces, as well as serving on the following boards:  Library Board, Planning Board, Historical Commission, Historical Society, Historic District Commission, Master Plan Implementation Committee, Medfield State Hospital Reuse Committee, Medfield State Hospital Preservation Committee, Town Hall Renovation Committee, Conservation Commission, Open Space Planning Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, Committee to Evaluate Senior Tax Work Off Program, and Zoning Board of Appeals.

The reception is sponsored by the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation.

Straw Hat Park

Attached below is the landscaping plan for the proposed new Straw Hat Park.  Jean Mineo of the friends of the Straw Hat Park, a Medfield Foundation initiative, reported to the Medfield Foundation board at its meeting last night that her group is looking:

  • for $70,000 of funds from the annual town meeting this April; and
  • to fund raise $24,000 for extras and special features planned for the new park, such as the fountain.

Construction will begin in August if monies are appropriated at the annual town meeting.  The really interesting extras will be included if sufficient funds are raised to allow for them.  Interested supporters can reach Jean at 242-9991.

Monique Allen of The Garden Continuum donated the design services, and Jean continues to donate countless hours to making Medfield more interesting – Jean was behind the Art Boxes that now decorate the traffic control boxes around town and the Thistle project coming this May to decorate forty trees at the Medfield State Hospital.

Last Year for Millis Wonderland
Holiday Pageant To Be Gifted to a Worthy Nonprofit

Recently, the Meehan family made the decision to give Millis Wonderland and all its assets (1,200 animations, 45 glass-encased floats, 100,000 lights, and all supporting equipment) to a suitable nonprofit after this season.   The critical factor in the gifting will be the charity’s pledge to use the assets for the celebration of Christmas and benefit of the community.   Essential, too, will be the nonprofit’s assurance that it will operate the display at its chosen new site for a significant span of years.

The Angel Run is almost here…

What you need to know

The Angel Run is this Sunday, December 7th and final preparations are under way. As a reminder, the race starts and ends at Medfield High School. Parking will be available at MHS, Blake Middle School or Metacomet Park for any overflow needs. The race starts at 2pm but we suggest getting there earlier to avoid the crowds.

If you live in Medfield, your T-shirts and Bibs will be hand delivered to your house on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. If you don’t receive your package in your mailbox by end of day Thursday, please email us at angelrun@medfieldfoundation.org.

If you live outside of Medfield, your T-Shirts and Bibs will be available for pick-up starting at 12:30pm on Sunday at Medfield High School near the same day registration tables.

Volunteers Still Needed

We are still in need of volunteers willing to help out for the event. Do you have family that are planning to watch instead of participate? Their assistance could be very helpful. Open positions are listed on our Sign-up Genie site. And even if you are participating, we are looking for Bakers to provide some treats for the after party. Use the Sign-up Genie site to register as a Baker.

What about the Weather?

The Angel Run is a rain or shine event. If the weather is a bit unpleasant, we’ll still be doing the event. So dress appropriately and put on a smile.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please email us at angelrun@medfieldfoundation.org.

See you Sunday!

The third annual #GivingTuesday takes place TODAY, Dec. 2, 2014.

The Medfield Foundation has lots of initiatives doing terrific work around town and all donations are tax deductible. Find them on-line at http://www.medfieldfoundation.org/support.html and consider supporting the short term initiative to renovate the Straw Hat Park in downtown (between Zebra’s and Starbucks), or to another of the great causes in town.

I want to also give thanks to all of you who help make Medfield a nicer place to live, work, and play through your time, talents, and treasure!
