2013 Medfield Foundation volunteers of the year at the reception on 3/10/13 at The Center

At the reception on Sunday, March 10 at The Center, the 2013 Medfield Foundation volunteers of the year were recognized for their extraordinary volunteer service.

Pictured in the front row are Beth Eby, Al Manganello, Ann Thompson, and Katrina Simon, and in the back row are Rick Abecunas, Cynthia Greene, Michelle Doucette, Greg Lyons, Emily Monac, and Rich McKinney.

All those nominated for recognition and those people that suggested them for recognition spoke about the volunteer work they are doing.  Kathy Simon commented that “we were so impressed with all the volunteers. It was uplifting to see what an amazing group
of people we have in Medfield. Makes me proud to live here!”  Patti Garofalo remarked that “it’s quite a special event for everyone who attends.  We all leave there feeling happier and very proud of our town for cultivating such terrific, kind people/volunteers.”

Congressman Joseph Kennedy honored the four volunteers of the year with flags flown over the Capital in their honor, and Representatives Garlick and Winslow and Senator Timilty joined together to provide them proclamations from the legislature.  Selectman Mark Fisher also presented them honors for the town.

The Medfield Foundation raises private monies for public purpose in Medfield, $1.4 m. to date, and has also been specially recognizing individual volunteers since 2008.

Veterans Day Assembly

Blake Middle School held a truly remarkable assembly this morning to honor all veterans, but especially Vietnam era veterans.  The new Vietnam Veterans Plaque was unveiled at the end- see the photo.

Principal Nat Vaughn presided with just the right touch to keep things moving along and to keep them profoundly emotionally moving at the same time.

About to be Eagle Scout, Sam Marble both lead the pledge of allegiance and also described how he created, permitted, and built the new patio that will eventually house the plaque in front of the school.

Former teacher John Parsons presented the gift of a flag that he had flown in Afghanistan and Iraq.  He was assisted by BMS head custodian and Vietnam vet Bob Kadehjian.  What a wonderful experience for the students to both hear from a former teacher and to see Bob through the lens of a different light.

Frank Iafolla delivered an extremely poignant speech recounting his first hand experiences graduating from MHS in 1967 and going into the Marines during a war that was not popular with many.

The town’s stellar Veterans Service Officer, Ron Griffin, woke up and energized the students with a loud greeting a la Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam.  Ron delivered moving explanations of the names on the plaque, the two 19 year olds who were killed in Vietnam (Stephen Hinkley and Peter Kristof), and the many who have since died.   Ron reminded each class of the other dedications of plaques to veterans of which they have been a part, and he had them literally talking back to him as they recalled each.  He was having a personal conversation with all 700 students in the gym at once.  Ron handled his talk with verve, solemnity, and mastery of the task.  Most importantly, he had those gathered acknowledge and honor the veterans who were present.  There about a dozen Vietnam vets and about two dozen other vets attending.

The final speech was by BMS teacher Deb Manning, who shared the story of her father, an Air Force pilot killed in Vietnam when she was a toddler.  Her account was incredibly moving and heart  wrenching at the same time.

The students and all present were treated to a remarkable event.  We were all reminded that freedom is not free, not without a cost, a cost paid by our veterans, and that we have our veterans to thank for that freedom.
Medfield TV recorded the assembly, and you are encouraged to seek it out.  It was a moving experience.

On being a selectman

The Memorail Day events are one of my favorite things I do as a selectman.  We are remembering the right people, as we honor our veterans who gave their lives for our country.  Medfield’s speeches and programs are both delivered and presented in a properly respectful way.  Plus we all get in a good walk, before an excellent lunch provided by the Legion.  Yesterday Lt. Col. Todd Caruso returned to his hometown to deliver wonderful remarks and to make a gift to the town and the Legion of framed flags that he flew over Afganistan on 9/11/11.

I saw the fringe tree at the Medfield State Hospital while jogging on Sunday morning, and it was past peak, but still pretty.  The leaves had overgrown the flowers, and the flowers had started to fade.  It peaked a little over a week ago, as it was spectacular the Sunday before.

This morning I went to the MCAP meeting, to learn that the grant is still being processed by the feds and that  plans continue for the MCAP website.
