Marijuana dispensary downtown

A group is looking to site a marijuana dispensary in the downtown, at the former Strata Bank site.  The annual town meeting (ATM) last year only zoned the Industrial Extensive (IE) areas of town for such marijuana dispensaries.  The IE districts are all located around the intersection of Rte 27 and West Street (NB – I originally mistakenly put in the intersection of Rtes 109 & 27 – sorry).

Medical marijuana was a topic covered at the Massachusetts Municipal Association fall meeting for selectmen that I attended last Saturday.  In the status update remarks by the MMA’s executive director, Geoff Beckwith, he said that – –

  1. the Massachusetts Municipal Association was instrumental in getting the Board of Selectmen  instead of the Board of Health to be the responsible municipal entity who would weigh in on proposed locations to the state Department of Public Health, and
  2. the Board of Selectmen support and/or non-opposition is an important enough factor to the state Department of Public Health, so the Board of Selectmen can use that support and/or non-opposition to achieve concessions from the proponents.
  3. the Massachusetts Municipal Association has a point person we can contact for assistance on dealing with with marijuana dispensaries.

Marijuana to West Street

Attorneys have inquired of Town of Medfield officials about their clients’ plans to open a marijuana cultivation facility at 99 West Street.  From the attorney’s email to the town official –

“As of now their plan is to put a cultivation center only at that location.

“There would be no signage and the outside of the building would look almost identical to its existing face.  Our clients are well funded Mass. residents that run multi-million dollar private equity firms.”

From Scratch doing dinner Wed – Sat

Our family’s favorite breakfast place in Medfield, From Scratch,  has started doing dinners.  It is now open until 8 PM on Wednesdays to Saturdays.  Kristen and Deb just gave me the news that the food is great – the Chicken Alfredo reportedly allowed one to taste each of its elements, and was completely finished.  It is great to have a new family dinner option in town.

Chinese take out locating on North St.

I spoke to the owner of the proposed Chinese food take out restaurant on Saturday that is looking to move into the old fish store on North Street.  I asked him about what it would be. He gave me his card and explained that he has been in Wellesley for years as China Sky, and that one of his customers suggested the Medfield space to him. See www.chinaskyrestaurant.com.

Years ago, the Downtown Study Committee consultant’s report suggested that the businesses on that block open themselves up to the parking in the middle of the block, which sounds like what was presented to the planning board, and that block become the center of the downtown.  I hope the plans call for a customer door to the back parking lot.

4 times the game pieces at Shaw’s

The manager of Shaw’s told me last night that today and tomorrow they are giving out 4 times the number game pieces at Shaw’s to get them distributed before the contest ends Thursday.

Zoning Change to Make Opening New Businesses Easier

Needham recently enacted a zoning change to make it easier for new businesses to get approval under Needham zoning to open the doors.  To me it sounds like a good idea to make the process both easier and faster for businesses looking to locate in Medfield.  A similar zoning change in Medfield could create the discretion to allow the new business uses that do not fit on all fours with what the zoning says.  Another thing we could do at the town meeting the last Monday in April.   https://medfield02052.blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/20110914-needham-zoning-to-permit-business-uses.pdf

Sam White’s is Expanding into the A.H. Harris & Sons Site

It was reported to me this morning that Sam White’s is buying the A.H. Harris & Sons site on West Mill Street, and that is the reason that A.H. Harris & Sons is leaving town.  Harris is apparently consolidating multiple locations in indoors in one giant 100,000 sq. ft. building, maybe in Middleboro.

Sam White’s still has its original location on Rte. 9 in Newton.

Nice to know both that Sam White’s is doing well enough to expand, and that A. H. Harris is not voluntarily pulling out of Medfield.
