10th safest in Mass

10. Medfield (click here for full article)

As the birthplace of “Joy to the World” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” the community of Medfield values community spirit and get-togethers.  Also from Medfield is Hannah Adams, the first female author in America to be compensated for her work and  James Plimpton, inventor of the roller skate. This year, the whole town came together to safely dispose of more than 100 pounds of drugs on the annual Drug Take Back Day. Efforts like these keep dangerous medications out of town water supplies and the hands of the city’s youth.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Massachusetts

We looked at the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2013 to determine Massachusetts’s 50 safest cities. We eliminated cities with a population below 8,000 residents and any city that did not submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made list, share the news by embedding the “Massachusetts Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste. ——————————————————————————————————
Next, we assessed each remaining city based on the number of reported property crimes (arson, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and larceny-theft) and violent crimes (robbery, murder, aggravated assault, and rape). Finally, to level the playing field for all cities, we determined the chance of these crimes happening out of 1,000 people in each city.

Of the 50 cities that made our list, 49 reported no incidents of murder in 2013, and 40 percent reported fewer than 10 total violent crimes. In addition, 78 percent of the cities on our list had no reports of arson, and 33 cities reported fewer than five incidents of motor vehicle theft.

These 50 cities boast proactive public safety programs and shrewd security initiatives that help their residents feel safe and secure. If you call the Bay State home or if you’re considering a move, make sure to look over the cities whose safety records stood out enough to make our list.

No matter where you call home, it’s always prudent to know the most current and effective ways to keep your home and loved ones safe. Bookmark our Massachusetts Safety Directory to connect to up-to-date, comprehensive information about safety and security in the Bay State.

More photos from Vic

I bumped in to Vic Cevoli at MSH again Saturday, and he both showed and sent me the attached color photos he had taken.  He is interested in putting together a portfolio of his MSH photos.

Angel Run registration is open

Angel Run

Registration now open as Angel Run celebrates 10 years

The fall season is in full swing here in Medfield and that means it is time to register for the MFi Angel Run. This year’s race on Sunday, December 6th will be the 10th running of the much loved family run/walk through the winding 5k route around South, Elm and Philip streets and surrounding neighborhoods. Registration is exclusively online at the Medfield Foundation’s website, medfieldfoundation.org. Register by the October 31st deadline for early bird pricing and the ever-popular commemorative t-shirt. New this year is an opportunity to purchase a 10th anniversary keepsake when you register.

“We are pleased to introduce bib chip timing for the race in 2015. The timing chips which are embedded into the runners’ bibs will give participants highly accurate finish times and alleviate some of the finish line congestion, ” said Rose Colleran, event co-chair.

Also new this year in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Angel Run is a poster contest open to all Medfield public school students. Poster making party events will be running after school during the month of October. Winners will be chosen for special recognition and all entries will be used to decorate the course.

“Our student volunteers are a big part of the MFi Angel Run and we wanted to give them a special role in helping to commemorate the 10th running this year. Course decorations give such a personal touch to the event every year so the poster contest seemed a natural fit,” said Susan Weisenfeld, co-chair.

As always the MFi Angel Run is a family friendly community event and participants of all paces are welcome including strollers and dog walkers. Local businesses have been quick to sign on with sponsorship and in kind donations.

“It really is an opportunity to ‘Give Where You Live’ here in Medfield,” said Evan Weisenfeld, Medfield Foundation president echoing the organization’s mission statement of Building A Stronger Medfield. All proceeds from the MFi Angel Run are used to help Medfield residents in need.

After October 31st registration for the Sunday, December 6th 2pm run/walk will only be available on race day with no option for a t-shirt purchase. Visit the Medfield Foundation website at medfieldfoundation.org to be part of the tradition.

Clouds at MSH this AM by Vic Cevoli

20151007-VC-strange clouds at MSH

Victor Cevoli sent this photo along this morning in an email with this explanation:

I was out for a walk early this morning at MSH and saw a line of clouds drifting in from the west.  I started following them, as they looked rather unusual.  And as luck would have it they drifted right over the new water tower.  The whole show lasted just a few minutes, but they as they passed they gave this photograph and quietly continued on their way.  v

MSH photos

A couple of weeks ago while jogging I met Victor Cevoli at Medfield State Hospital and struck up a conversation with him because I had noticed him taking photographs.  I explained to him the town’s process to figure out what to do with the MSH. and that it was likely that many if not most of the buildings at MSH would have to be demolished due to their advanced stage of decay, and that the town would love to see his photographs to document what had been at the site.

Vic in turn explained to me that he had always been interested in photography, that he had headed the creative department at Hill Holiday, that his son made documentary films, and that he found the MSH site inspiring for his photography.

Vic was also kind enough to share some of his photographs with me, and to allow me to share them with others.  I uploaded the PDF Vic sent to me, and recommend that you look at the photos there, as I found that they look much sharper and more precise than the jpg files I created and inserted below.
