Ten Medfield volunteers received recognition at last spring’s reception.

The Medfield Foundation, Inc. is a volunteer-run private nonprofit, tax deductible 501(c)(3) corporation created in 2001 to raises private monies for public purposes in the Town of Medfield.  The MFi allows donors to designate their donations for particular purposes.  The MFi also allows motivated groups to raise monies for Medfield purposes under the rubric of the Medfield Foundation.  To date, the MFi has raised over $1,500,000.00 for the Town of Medfield and celebrated over one hundred volunteers.

John & Mary Harney

On Sunday morning, Medfield stalwarts John and Mary Harney were observed doing the town a huge favor by picking up the trash and weeding the brick sidewalk by and in front of the Medfield Memorial Library and the Gazebo.  They were seen picking up cigarette butts and the smallest pieces of grass between the bricks.

There is a reason Medfield looks as good as it does, and a lot of it is because of citizens like the Harneys.  A big thank you to John and Mary!

New Life Home Refurnishing

This from Susan Maritan –

New Life Home Refurnishing, a non-profit organization which accepts donations of gently used furniture and household items for individuals and families in need, is asking the public for help. They are in need of household appliances in good condition (toasters, coffee makers and small microwave ovens), bed frames (twin-full and queen) as well as gently used mattresses and box springs (no stains, tears or visible marks).

Medfield residents, Ron Yates and Doug Marshall, Co-Presidents of New Life, want the public to know that donations can be brought to the New Life warehouse 102 Elm Street (Route 27) in Walpole between 9 and 11 AM this Saturday, June 14, or New Life can provide a pick-up.

Please note, this summer New Life will have summer hours. June 14th will be the last Saturday that the warehouse is open for donations until September. Starting June 25th, the warehouse will be open every other Wednesday evening from 6:30 – 8:30 PM for drop offs.

Those interested in donating, scheduling a pick up, volunteering or looking at the schedule of summer hours are encouraged to reference the NewLife web site www.newlifehr.org or may call 774-316-6395.

The mission of NewLife Home Refurnishing is to help individuals and families in transition from the Metro-West and Greater Boston area. The New Life team believes that the opportunity to “shop” from the warehouse of gently used furnishings and household items offers dignity and affirmation to those who have been marginalized.

MFi’s volunteer awards

Yesterday afternoon at The Center the Medfield Foundation volunteer awards reception was held to fete and celebrate the ten extraordinary Medfield volunteers suggested for recognition this year by fourteen different residents.  DCAMM Commissioner Carole Cornelison deadpanned about John Thompson, that at first she was not aware that he actually had a job, because she saw him so much at so many meeting related to the Medfield State Hospital environmental clean up.  For the past couple of years John has spent 10-20 hours per week dealing with that MSH clean up for the Town of Medfield.

Kathy Brennan, one of the event organizers commented that “this uplifting event celebrated the inspirational volunteers who represent just a small sample of the good work done by so many good people in Medfield. As Anne Frank once said: ‘How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.’  You can make a difference.”

See Colleen Sullivan’s blog post and photos on Patch for more detail.

This observer found the stories by the volunteers to be both moving and inspirational, and highly recommends looking for the replay of the reception on Medfield.TV, so you too can learn just what remarkable things your neighbors are effecting.

Andrea Nevins – MFi youth volunteer of the year

ANDREA NEVINS – MFi’s
YOUTH VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2014
Andrea Nevins-2

The Medfield Foundation proudly recognizes Andrea Nevins as its 2014 Youth Volunteer of the Year for her initiation of the Miss Amazing Massachusetts event this past year.

Other organizations where Andrea volunteers:

  • Medfield High School Student Council
  • Governor Patrick’s Project 351 Alumni Leadership Council
  • Boston Cares Teen Advisory Council
  • Best Buddies
  • Special Olympics
  • Nashoba Valley Adaptive skiing volunteer instructor

The Miss Amazing is a national celebration of girls and  young women with disabilities, conducted in twenty-five states, which provides an opportunity to demonstrate the participants’ confidence and self-esteem in a safe and supporting environment.  Participants spent the day in fun activities, conducted interviews with event moderators and spent the evening providing introductions of themselves, performing a special talent and crossing the stage with a volunteer escort.  Andrea initiated bringing the inaugural Miss Amazing Massachusetts event to the Blake Middle School.  Andrea recruited members to and also co-chaired each subcommittee of the event including:

  • contestant sign-up, where she presented to numerous organizations (SEPAC’s ARC’s, Best Buddies) about the Miss Amazing pageant to encourage participation;
  • fundraising, where she directly and successfully solicited support among the corporate, foundation, and Medfield community;
  • publicity, where coverage was provided by Medfield Hometown Weekly, Medfield.TV, Worcester Telegram and Gazette, Fox-25 News, and participants’ local papers;
  • facilities and operations, where she worked with individuals at the Town House and Blake Middle School to provide the venue and logistics for the event; and
  • volunteers, where ultimately over 60 individuals participated in a meaningful way during the event.

Elements of the inaugural Massachusetts event are being used as models for other states that are launching a pageant and the Massachusetts event already inspired one in Connecticut.

Andrea’s earliest volunteering started at age 12 with Boston Cares, where she cleaned public parks and schools, participated in youth programs at local Boy & Girls Clubs chapters, and assembled kits for the homeless.  Later, Andrea was instrumental in bringing the “Putting for Patients” fundraising program supporting Dana Farber to Medfield and spearheaded with another the “Spread the word to end the R Word” initiative to Blake Middle School.

Andrea Nevins and all the other extraordinary volunteers will be feted at the MFi’s 2014 volunteer recognition reception from 3 -5 PM on Sunday, March 23 at The Center at Medfield, at which all are welcome.  The seventh annual MFi volunteer awards are again sponsored by the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation, for the third year.
