Charter & Bylaw Review Committee

The Board of Selectmen are the guests tonight of the Charter & Bylaw Review Committee.  Let me know of anything particular that you feel should be changed.

  • Should the town clerk be appointed?
  • Should town meeting be moved away from the school vacation week?
  • Should the municipal election be moved to coincide with a state election to get greater numbers voting?
  • Should the zoning be changed anywhere?

  2. The Town Clerk is currently elected, and as such is totally independent of the other employees in the town house. Being elected, the town clerk answers only to the voters, and no one else. That can be both good and bad.

If the town clerk were appointed, then the town clerk would become more of another town employee who would be slotted into the hierarchy of the town government and accountable to those in that hierarchy, instead of existing as a separate an island.

    • Hi Pete,
In regards to elected vs appointed Town Clerk’s position, I would be more than willing to meet with you to discuss the pros and cons and answer any questions that you may have.

      • Carol,
Thank you for the offer. What would help me the most is to get a copy of the written materials you mentioned the other evening at the committee’s meeting that you were going to get to the committee about the pros and cons of having an elected versus appointed town clerk. Thank you for your courtesies and assistance with this matter.
        Pete
